I've been building computers for roughly thirteen years and in all that time I've had at least three static discharge events that I can remember. I say three events but it's very possible that I may have witnessed even more. They haven't happened very often but they have always worried me a bit. Whenever a static discharge occurred, it didn't destroyed the components; but it did cause my computer to abruptly restart/reboot. My advice to anybody who wants to build computers is that they take all of the necessary electro-static discharge (ESD) precautions before they go tinkering inside their computer case. An anti-static wrist strap may cramp the style of some people but it's worth it because it will save you some money on computer parts in the long run. The wrist straps don't cost much either. If you want to be thorough, consider getting some ESD gloves and a grounding mat as well. In these tough economic times, it makes sense to avoid expenses wherever you can.
+Marcus Bradburn same with me.some small discharge has happend in the early years.nothing went wrong.the gigabyte ga-z97mx gaming 5 hase aparently so bad esd protection against discharge that if you tuch the tower with a small amount that you dont feel it nothing seems to happend.until you trie to start the pc nect time.and the house i live in have ground conection to the pcu that are grounded to tower then tower to motherboard.they have saved money the wrong place there with that model card.never again.30 years never senn such bad mobo design hven it comes to esd protection on a vital part.
Nice that someone tells about the importance of electrostatic discharge prevention !! It will indeed lower the life expectancy or completely blow your hardware ! I see a lot of repair videos on You Tube with people that don't worry about electrostatic problems ! This is a pitty because a ESD wrist strap is very cheap to buy and can prevent a lot of mysterious damages to electronic hardware. Use it !!
Strange things happen when you get in front of the camera. Your mind races, because you trying to remember certain topics, that you would like to say.I think I might try to write down what i want to say or at least have the topics and notes written down first. That way i can focus on the speaking alone. It will have to be the next series, though.... thank you for the comment and view Mike
Hi, I'm about to start working on my computer (I have all the parts ready to start, except thermal paste) and I don't know anything about grounding or building at all. How often do I need to ground and since the screw holding the cover to my wall outlet is painted over can I ground using the grounding plug instead? (it's 3-pronged)
writing down is a good a idea, I get the same issue with speaking normally to a person. They ask me a question which on paper can be answered easily, speech just kills me and puts me on the spot, even on camera.
Also I installed a new hard drive last weekand when I went to power the system back on, it was dead. I found eventually the motherboard was fried. Is it because I wasn't grounded or more likely a short from the hard drive or sata cable? Should I be wary that the new hard drive is defective and caused it because I don't want to fry this next motherboard I just ordered
I'm building my pc on wood floors, wooden table. I'll plug in the PSU and then put a mobo standoff in the screw hole of the PSU. The anti static wrist band will clamp on the standoff. Is this ok?
Hi, My asus mobo didn't come with screws but my CIT case came with screws in that shape but in a black colour (probably painted) does this matter? Liked and subed.
I just took my laptop memory out to replace it-i was resting on my stereo speaker as a sort of table and that was on a deep pile polyester carpet.I knocked the modules off about 8 times on to the floor and also my dog licked the memory as well and i spilt a bit of pepsi into the hole bit where the modules go on the laptop. Now nothing works properly and when i try to turn my laptop on it sometimes starts and sometimes doesnt...when it does it only stays on for about 5-6 minutes before going to a purple screen, then beeping 4 times and the cpu fan goes really really really loud and fast before going all black and quiet.I was trying to follow instructions on youtube thats why i kept knocking my modules off.My laptop is only 3 months old and cost me ALOT of money. What has happened? Is everything going to be alright if i just leave it for a bit then turn it on again or should i wait for at least a week for it to get better again? The man from the shop where i brought it said did i remove anything-i said only the bit where the memory goes which had a label which said VOID or VIOD or something if removed. He just laughed and hung up.What does VIOD mean? And if i put that back on will my lappy work.I am really sad and cant stop crying about it as all my money went on this laptop and now i cant use Netflix or anything.I am properly gutted out on this one. What a fu**er...!
wotskabbalahyour in a bit of a pickle, but I may be able to help. First off, the label that said "VOID", is referring to the warranty being voided if removed. Its strange he put label over the memory module door, the one place where the customer can increase performance by replacing modules with bigger ones, and not have to take it over to a shop to get done. Don't power up pc anymore until you get modules and module slot bay cleaned up. Take a Q tip and soak in it some rubbing alcohol(drain excess) and gently, while holding the memory module on the side(plastic part, don't touch the metal pins, or components with your finger), rub each metal pin with the alcohol Q tip and clean them off. Set aside each module on a glass or wood table and let it dry. Take another Qtip and dip in the rubbing alcohol(drain excess, to where it is not dripping off the Qtip) and gently, I mean gently, clean up the memory module slot area inside the Laptop, let dry overnight. I am assuming that the modules are not bad and that the coke has not done anything permanent to the motherboard or slots. I have seen this many times, spilling a coke on the keyboard, but not directly inside the memory bay. Lets hope for best, follow my directions exactly and be very careful not to bend any pins inside the Memory Module bay(remember be gentle, you don't have to scrub)
I heard a guy say another video that the power supply should be plugged into the wall and then you can ground yourself 2: the power supply is that true even while I'm installing a new motherboard?
i would tihnk that if you have a charge in you it would be better to ground your selv to waterpipes in the house or if you have a ground grid dug down outside .i have build many computers and if you dont have a ground leed in the powercoard to the pcu and you tuch metaltower most motherboard have good esd protection but som z97 mobo i have build with i5 and notcua d15 all good components.onboard grafikk used since my cpu is an i5 model4590s apu.should belive that a board marked ultra durable would have good esd guard for the oq chip.but no.have a old compac presario backup tower pc.asus prodused the mobos for hp compaqs.you can tuch the tower with so much static in you that you see the spark go to the tower.but it still works.and i can stop and start it like normal.with those new top line gigasbyte card i have bought z97mx.if they get a sniff of som small amount that you dont feel it when tuching the tower, the pc acts like nothing have happend and work fine until you trie to turn it on next time you wil use it.the iq ship seem to have no guard for esd at all.tey are my nighmare.last time i by gigabyte for shure.
I like the music and the way it shows your image and then fades away. Very interesting video and informative.
Great video, liked the demonstration of the grounding to the case.

Awesome video, this is exactly what I needed to know

Great video, Michael. Thank you very much for sharing
That would be ideal, thanks for the watch
thanx dude, very informative , more info than the ASUS board install video.....mentions nothing about grounding: )

would it work if you are bare footed on a tile floor

Lol wtf. What part of being extremely careful and stay away from rug don't you understand

Write out a list of things you want to talk about and do one topic at a time, do cuts if you need to :)
Nice video but you need to work on your speech pattern.
im assemble my component without caring about the ESD.YOLO
