  • Since the inception of the GMES and Africa Project in 2018, the WeMAST-funded initiative at the University of the Western Cape has significantly advanced capacity building. The project which is being implemented by SASSCAL and being funded by the African Union and European Union has seen over 30 postdoctoral, PhD, master's, and honors students graduating. Many of these graduates are now contributing their expertise to key sectors such as water departments, governments, and the private sector across the region.
Recruited from countries across Southern Africa-including Lesotho, Eswatini, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-these graduates are making a substantial impact on Earth Observation data applications in natural resource and environmental management.
Additionally, over 1,000 emerging young scientists have received training in Earth Observation through short courses and annual seminars.
Listen: One of the beneficiaries of the WeMAST funded initiative Dr Siyamthanda Gxokwe as he shares his testimonial.
