3-SEASON SLEEPING BAG
The Defense 4 comes from the military sector and is one of the best-selling 3-season sleeping bags in its class. It is characterized by the center zipper and an extremely robust and waterproof outer material. The zippered cover flap protects against wind and moisture and the integrated zipper warming strip additionally prevents heat loss. The outer shell is a super-light, highly resistant, microfibre nylon with a fine microporous coating which makes it water-repellent. There is a generous draft tube on the inside of the zipper to prevent heat loss at the zipper.

This high-performance winter sleeping bag is designed for uncompromising warmth retention in arctic conditions. It has a triple-layer sandwich construction with a loose-fitting Shellproof shell which guarantees optimum warmth. I guesstimate how much clothing I will need in the bag. I go into the bag and then add or subtract layers as needed. It's a pain to get out of the bag. I don't want to, but it's important- particularly (as you point out) if wearing too much. I'd sweat and then freeze. You are giving people the knowledge they need. Well done!

Anything that isn't the shell layer goes inside, unless it's a tiny mummy-style bag (I'm never buying one again). I don't wear it but it's somewhere around my feet or under my head so it's nice and warm in the morning and easy to find in case of emergency
I almost always sleep naked inside the bag all winter.

I own a Tropen, Defense 4 and a Defense 6. First years I used the Tropen with the Defense 4 in combination. It works, but it's not that comfi in the usage.
The Defense 6 is much warmer as the Defense 4. I use the Defense 4 not below -5 °C, because it can get very fresh for me at that mark. The Defense 6 kept me warm at -20°C. Never slept outside colder then that.
If you want a winter sleeping bag, get the Defense 6.
We've used Defence 4 also in -20 and it was fine. But maybe thats was comfortable because i'm swimming in winter aswell :)
@Wesley Snider Thank you for your opinion! I think I'm gonna get Tropen for next coming summer and Defence 6 for next winter. At first I was going to get Tropen and after that Defence 4 but for me one sleeping bag seems to be more handy than two combined together.
Hi Wesley, did you use a sleeping mat, mylar blanket, wool blanket, air mattress, and/or sleep in clothes, etc. alongside the sleeping bag when you used the Defense 4?
@@Primal_K a Therm a Rest neoair xtherm (7,2 R). Most of the time I sleep with wool socks and thermo underwear.

Late answer, just watched the video now: I guess it really depends on where you are and what kind of ground there is. The German army groundshield works perfectly nearly everywhere in Europe, is cheap and durable. I was a soldier for a couple years and it never let me down. Not even in the mid-Swedish winter. Hope that helped a little. But I guess after two years you already got one, right? 😂 @ampeg187

Got there a little bit laugh thou. At the end of the video everyone is asked - If there where any problems during the night and everyone relies - Everything was good. And then I thought. What if you need to pee when you are in the coazy sleeping bag during the night when out side temperature is - 20 degree celsium. :D

Back when I was a soldier we peed in our water bottles 😂 the first couple times I was disgust, but you’ll forget about it really fast 😁
Week ago, in a hammock, -17 celsius, i used defence 1 and 4 together, warm water bottle inside bags and all winter clothes on. Yes i was warm until morning. I have doubts for sleepingbag ”comfort” ratings. Sure, im cold sleeper, but still companys want to drop down ratings so it sell better. Okay, with my combination, i think icould go -20-25 just fine. Anyways, i love Carinthia sleepingbags. Bulletproof materials, and with top zippers they work best in hammocks.

Also from Ukraine, have following setup: D4, Combat Bivy, Klymit inflating mat, Therm-A-Rest pad. I can ensure it can handle any conditions pretty much anywhere. However it has only several week points(common for any sleeping bags) in battlefield cases, the first one is physically impossible to get out quickly what it’s just a matter of life and death under artillery fire, second one is mental you need to battle with your brain to separate sleeping systems like this from a bags for corpses 😅it’s not a joke because you know about the drones sniffing around with grenades to drop. In others it’s perfect. D6 mb better for tourism, less good for soldiers, because of weight and size to carry on you when you need change positions often. I'm interested in the Carinthia sleeping bags, but I'm a bit confused. I thought Carinthia sold a military "sleeping system", similar to the USGI Sleeping System. The USGI has an outer waterproof Gor-Tex layer, a bag for cold temperatures, and another inner bag for warmer temperatures. When all 3 are used together, it can withstand very cold temperatures. The system works very well, but it's extremely heavy. I believe that's partially due to the fact that the USGI sleeping system uses synthetic insulation from the early 2000's, and it's not the best stuff on the market. Does Carinthia just sell individual sleeping bags, or do they sell a similar sleeping system, that weighs less than the USGI system?

Yes, thats Janis Klavins from Latvia. We use Helikon-Tex level 1 underwear and defence 4, Thermarest sleeping mat.

I have a question: Can I combine the Defence 1 with the Defence 4 in order to achieve a lower comfort temperature. And if so, do you have an opinion to what comfort degree I will achieve? Thanks! :)

@@user-rw5fz8wg4s If you have the 'large' (200mm) Def 1, you will need the XL Def 4. However, if you have the regular (185mm) Def 1, you can use it in either size Def 4.

Hi Im sorry if I missed it but may I ask what kind of backpacks you use? Ive got a Carinthia Wilderness sleeping bag and its huge. So I struggle to find a backpack which would fit the sleepingbag inside. I consider getting a defence 4 because its a bit smaller when packed up.

I have used finnish army defense 4 bag a lot, an my biggest problem is cold feet... i think that bag should be a bit thiker than it is.

Hello! I want to buy Defense 4 and combine it with Tropen. Do I need to take the bigger size Defense 4 (Tropen size M + Defense 4 size L) or should they be the same size (Tropen size M + Defense 4 size M)?

I'm 5'8" and I found the medium bag too short. I gave the medium one to my son and got a large for myself which fits perfect.
I am around 5’8, if you don’t mind, how much do you weigh? Do you keep any stuff in the bag with you? I’m going to be buying one in the next week or so
I keep a gatorade bottle in my bag to piss in. Because Im not getting out 2 times a night to take a piss. lol. And I wear sleep booties like outdoor vitals to keep my feet warm
What is the difference between a Defence 4 and the Finnish M05 bag?
This sleeping bag is practically a Carinthia Defense 4 Bag (a very highly regarded military and just in general, synthetic sleeping bag). Unlike like a lot of Defense 4 clones, this is made by Carinthia and the temperature ranges are the same so it seems that these are the same sleeping bags.
The definite advantage with this sleeping bag over the Carinthia Defense 4, is that this comes with the optional (but highly recommended cotton liner which attaches and combines well with the sleeping system) in addition to a less useful carrying bag. These two accessories alone cost 70 Euroes if purchased in addition to the regular Carinthia Defense 4. Finally, this sleeping bag has a wider/roomier cut than the slicker Carinthia 4 (this is a matter of preference). It also has a re-enforced toe-box/foot area which the Defense 4 does not have. This is a slightly improved variant of the Defense 4 that for 10 Euroes more has 70 Euroes of accessories that the original Defense 4 needs bought separately.

Disappointed with my defence 4. I was cold in full Merino thermals at +1c. Had a Expad Dura mat with an R value of 5.7. In a tent. I think I'll have to wear insulated booties and down pants to get any use out of it.
Did down side was closed with zip ?
Because at +1C i have everytime too warm.
It’s your thermal underwear that prevented your sleeping bag from warming up! Hence you were cold, my friend. Better use a liner or wear lose clothing such as a pyama.
Yea I agree. Merino is nice for hiking and stuff but most of those are designed to transport heat and sweat away from your body. I used 100% cotton for sleeping in cold conditions back in my army days. Never disappointed.

Owning a Defense 4 for many years now I can NOT agree to your video!!! Defense 4 is already chilly below 5+ since it is a 3 SEASON bag only! For me this is more an "staged" advertisement rather than a "real" review! Just my 2 Cents!
thank you for your opinion. But this review are made in real weather and with real people. We can't fake it, even you hear snow sound not ussualy as -10, but more cold weather.

@@Militaryshoplv I was sleeping in Defence 4 in -25. I was is a level 7 jacket and even in my shoes. it was very very cold inside. Looks like I need to use Def.6 for such conditions.
