It takes some guts coming out as cocky confident to a crowd like this and JBL is for this reason one of the best heels on the mic.

Yes he's getting plenty of credit, particularly after he joined Smackdown on commentary. He doesn't get enough credit for being a good worker, but as far as his mic skills are concerned? People knows how great he was.
One thing about all of the older wrestlers, they were ALL witty, even the mid and lower card talents…they knew how to engage the crowds and control them.
I started watching pro wrestling in 2009 with simultaneously watching all old WWE and ECW videos when i got my first PC i did watch this did not understand what he said as i was 7 now i realize why JBL was the greatest underrated heel after finally understanding the meaning of this he completely owned the Crowd
It's a shame that the JBL character was only around for about two years before retiring to commentary. Imagine if he made that character switch earlier in his career
It wouldn't have worked, mainly because he wouldn't have been given the opportunity to be WWE champion (the roster was loaded with bigger stars from 2000 to 2003). Him becoming JBL in 2004 and feuding with Eddie was perfect timing and perfect scenario for him to become the top heel, he wouldn't have had that opportunity earlier.
