The greatest source of amusement for a modern wrestling fan are the people who go, "You know that's fake right?" and feel really proud of themselves for having come to such a world shaking conclusion.
You'd be amazed how many people still don't get it. Had a fellow fan at work that really thought most of it was real and I have met several people that can't be convinced.
I think the subtext of that question is usually "You know it's fake; so what do you get out of it?". I think they figure that you can get better ass beatings in "legit" sports that aren't predetermined and better soap opera action on day time TV and can't understand that different people have different tastes and might still wanna combine the two. This is where the "Days of Our Lives" people screwed up. If they taught their soap actors to whale on each other they'd have made crazy bank. Do it like a live play in front of an audience and when the Doctors dead brothers formerly dead evil twin shows up they can wrassle with each other. And that is how you sell Wrestlemania tickets to people's grannies.
Soap operas are "fake". Primetime medical dramas are "fake". Hollywood movies are "fake". Nevertheless, they are entertaining and require talent to pull off and keep people spending their hard-earned dollars on them.

Yes, wrestling is indeed "fake" or "orchestrated," but it's precisely this orchestration that makes it so entertaining. The artistry lies in the complexity of executing moves like the piledriver correctly and the horrible risk if they're not done perfectly. This blend of athletic performance, storytelling, and showmanship transforms wrestling into a striking scene. Despite the scripted outcomes, the physical demands and real risks involved require a lot of skill and precision. The "fake" aspect enhances the entertainment value, allowing for a controlled yet thrilling display that keeps fans on the edge of their seats. So as a kid in the 80s I actually witnessed a ring put together @ my local fair in Eastern North Carolina that had the shock in the middle and plywood. The Iron Sheek was there and as a kid waited around after the show and watched them dismantle it.
Yeah basically what happened from what I understand is that Vince said these traditional wrestling rings looked bad on TV, they looked bouncy which according to Vince would make it look fake. So as a consequence WWE/WWF either eliminated the spring altogether from the ring or tightened it so much as to render its function moot.

90s seem like yesterday. That was a great decade. High school and college for me. Some of the stuff they talked about were throw backs from the territories. Old ladies were used all the time. Often, they werent in the know. They were just perfect for getting heat.
I would honestly love to see you react to some old WWE promos, whether involving you or others like Eddie Guerrero, to get your reaction and talk about the process of cutting a good promo.
That video would get an insane amount of views!! Now all we have to do is hope that he sees this! ***IF YA SEE THIS, MAVEN... YA GOT TWO FANS THAT WANT TO SEE THIS VIDEO!!*** Hey,at least we tried. 😂
can confirm with an anecdote of 1 minor promotion, the 2 times I did a show with Lucha vavoom [luchadors and burlesque], their ring was as Maven described: 4 steel I-beams, around 12-18" tall, connected to the 4 ring posts, with smaller 4-6" steel or aluminum box joists every 1-2' to support the 2x6 planks that make up the floor. a layer of gym pads are then covered by a base canvas, then the top cover with branding and ads. The turnbuckle pads are more like boxing gloves with dense foam [same foam as the ring pad, closer to a pool float than a foam pillow]
also i got to soundcheck the ring mics. I ran the ropes and tombstoned a sandbag center of the ring, scared the crap out of my sound guy [I was lighting].
on the plants assaulted by the talent, Ring Ka King [the Indian TNA affiliate] had crowd plants for Scott Steiner to harass, chase and terrorize for his roid rage gimmick.
@DSPsWifesBf in ring ka king, he turned it to 11 on some episodes. Literally tearing apart the cheap bike rack crowd barrier and climbing the balcony to harass the crowd. The other part of his gimmick (or it could just be Steiner being Steiner) was racism. He repeatedly derided the local talent for being Indian to the other TNA guys who were there on a Russo invasion angle. It was Steiner, Matt Morgan, David Young, and the one he would bitch to most ironically Sanjay Dutt. The Young Bucks were there, but I think they pissed off Russo because he made them into local masked wrestlers the Mumbai Cats. MarkyD123 did a recap series on it.
The funny thing about when this came out, most if not all wrestling fans know it's a work and if you've seen enough matches you know the ins and outs but you also know bad things do happen as the old "Don't do this at home" ads used to say.
I stumbled across your channel Maven about a week ago , I’ve been glued to every video since then it’s so cool seeing the behind the scenes from someone that was in the business . Keep it up brother love from Atlanta
Maven is right too When I did Indy wrestling in the mid 90s i was a heel and we had a female plant (who was a wrestler as well as our head cook with a few other wrestlers) and we did a pile driver on a chair bump with her pretending to be a fan to get me heel heat We definitely wouldn't of done that with a plant who wasn't a worker
I just had a realizating this very night: Wrestling is like magic, done right, you'll never notice it. Done wrong, you or your opponent will get hurt. Thanks for conferming this to me
Hi Maven, thanks for basically being you. You're the prime example of dreams can come true and in your case being a wrestler. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Mae Young demanded Bubba Ray Dudley powerbomb her off of the titantron and through the table. She told Bubba Ray she'd beat the hell out of him if he didn't "Lay it on." She was breaking the arms of men for real back in the 1950's. Absolute legend.

Got to remember that video from 1991 …. 30 years ago Things change and so do some of the moves from then to know ! But it’s a good thing to watch ! In the city of Tupelo Mississippi the arena will not allow signs to be brought in and that’s sucks taking our signs for at the door … not being able to support our favorite wrestlers
Hes definitly correct about the ring. I use to work fir the Michigan Concert Service and took apart the three rings at WCW World War 3 in Detroit Michigan in November 1998. You van even see me on the pay per view when DDP jumps up on announcment table with U.S. belt on. Its was awesome!
I practice wushu (Chinese martial arts), and we use similar auditory techniques for solo forms. A quick stomp or slap of the forearm can make a move sound devastating.
I've seen this several times over the years. Very interesting documentary and for its time(before the internet), i'd even say "groundbreaking. Obviously one thing that may cause it to be "inaccurate," or better yet "dated" is that this information came from both 1. Non-WWE talent (Harley Race was the "booker" here. Even his buddies said he wasn't a particularly good one. Not sure if there were any WCW guys here.) 2. Talent trained at a different point. Obviously things change as time goes by. Training and wrestling techniques evolve as different talent comes in and offers something new. Like you said at the end, this doc was really just giving fans a taste of the behind the scenes.
Man this video brought back so many memories. My mom used to drive us around in a 1999 Ford Windstar and I would watch this VHS tape on replay for some reason as a kid lol

13:04 biggest example I can think of here is Nic Nemmeth, AKA Dolph Ziggler. In recent years, Nemmeth has become truly beloved for just how stellar he was at making other wrestlers look good and how much effort he truly put into his matches. It really is a shame he didn’t get a bigger push from WWE, but he is the biggest example of selling = stardom I’ve ever seen
I remember watching this when it aired. I think it was on NBC originally. There was also one narrated by Steve Allen (of all people) that was on A&E, I think, that featured real WWF wrestlers. I remember X-Pac (who was there!) mentioning that 'wrestling creates the illusion of violence.' No stunt granny in that one, though.
I remember when I saw this on NBC. I thought it was the most unintentionally hilarious thing I had ever seen. They weren’t trying to be funny, but I was laughing my ass off the whole time thinking “Do they really think we don’t know this shit already?”
Right! Or I wasn’t getting upset because a lot of the time I felt like they were trying to make it seem like a bad thing, exposing these secrets that’s tricking you, like how dare they, lol
Keep in mind that at the time there was at least one story per week of some kid being paralyzed in his backyard or on the school ground playing wrestling with their friends.
I started to watch wrestling as a 6 year old kid back then, so no, I didn‘t know it. Teens and adults are another story of course, if you don‘t realise wrestling is scripted by the age of 12, you‘re an idiot, but still, such a show would‘ve been good to have back in the day for me 😂 Now that I‘m 27 I‘m actually shocked I ever thought this shit was real. Especially the throwing punches and stomping is so obvious, but yeah what can I say, kids are stupid.

Wow this makes me miss these style of VHS tapes. I sweat the narrator (and probably loads of other people involved in this project) worked on that secrets of magic series (filmed after this) and classics like the ‘can’t be shown on tv’ documentaries and deadliest police chases 😩
When I was a kid I was kinda disenchanted when I found out wrestling wasn’t “real” but, now that I’m an adult, learning about all the behind the scenes stuff makes it more entertaining
I tried out for a local company. I could front bump, ass bump, but could not tuck my neck worth a damn for a back bump. I swear I concussed myself. lol
The minor whiplash on back bumps is crazy. I asked my trainer if I was missing something and he said It’s just part of the deal. You can’t avoid it sometimes. When you look for it you can see it happens to everyone.
I went to a Tacoma Washington show for Raw one time. For the “cops” on an Austin segment, they had some security guards dress as police officers in the back, you could see them from our seats. Then when the segment was over you saw those same guys go in the back, and come back out into the crowd as regular security. As for the signs that were handed out, I’ve been to multiple WWF/E shows as well as WCW shows and have never seen this done.
I think that jumpsuit did something to you mavin i can feel the passion you have for pro wrestling. While takin us to school. I think you still have heart for sport When you gonna get back in the ring.🤙
Maven leaning in and telling us the secret of predetermined matches was funny as hell ! Lol the WWE needs to hire you as a commentator or something for development of other wrestlers ! You’re so dope !
I will never grow tired of hearing Maven break down in-ring psychology. I’d love to hear him break down Roman’s COVID era empty arena matches when you could hear him talking down his opponent
The tables part reminded me of what Mick Foley said about "gimmicked" tables and chairs: "Man I wish we used gimmicked tables and chairs, that would have been so much easier on my body"
This is why as a fan of 57 years (I am 62 and started at grandmas knee at 5) it just makes me madder than a wet hen when people call wrestling "fake!" They have NO IDEA at the amount of skill, training, athleticism, acting (mostly live television), and stuntmen wrestlers are. Yes, the outcomes are scripted, Yes, punches are pulled... but the skill it takes to do it, and look like they are killing each other is phenomenal..... anyone who calls it "fake" has NO RESPCT for the business!!!!
I mean it's fake...but it's well executed by incredible athletes, and some are multi talented by being not only athletes but some what actors....nothing to be upset about wrestling fans know the dedication it takes to pull it off
@@twizzy585ots It isn't fake! It is scripted. Do you call an actor fake? No, his an actor who plays a role. A Wrestler is an athlete who plays a role. Neither is fake.

WWE's modern ring, now, has got to be different and softer than AEW's or a traditional ring. The sound on AEW's mat when sound someone hits it- it's like wood-on-metal, and no bass. WWE's ring though moves up and down about 8"-10" (maybe more) in the center- it's like there isn't any metal under the wood. And it helps make that bassy sound (especially during Fox's broadcasts which look terrible but sound really good) when someone hits it. And yes I know there are microphones under the ring to help capture that sound...and I know all about shaping sound with an EQ.
Kane first started wrestling in the mid to late 90s and he grabbed the fan out the crowd and ran him into the steps I think but I've seen them have plants in the crowd a few times

I was wondering why the narrator sounded so familiar. He’s freaking Salem the cat AKA Nick Bakay!
Came to the comments for this reveal, thank you haha
Same here thanks bud
Thanks for re uploading this Maven. I was looking forward to this and when the audio on the video didn't work I wasn't happy lol. Have a great rest of the day
90s seem like yesterday.
“Not that damn soft” - Maven 16:34 😂😂
can confirm with an anecdote of 1 minor promotion, the 2 times I did a show with Lucha vavoom [luchadors and burlesque], their ring was as Maven described: 4 steel I-beams, around 12-18" tall, connected to the 4 ring posts, with smaller 4-6" steel or aluminum box joists every 1-2' to support the 2x6 planks that make up the floor. a layer of gym pads are then covered by a base canvas, then the top cover with branding and ads.
@@Lightman0359Steiner doesn’t seem to know when to turn off that roid rage gimmick though lol
Please do more long videos like this. Helps with my commute to work
You got it! Just wait, going to see the Deadman next week
@@MavenKHuffman Wait, does this mean?... 😮
I stumbled across your channel Maven about a week ago , I’ve been glued to every video since then it’s so cool seeing the behind the scenes from someone that was in the business . Keep it up brother love from Atlanta
Honestly this has become one of my favorite channels. Thanks Maven. Keep up the amazing work
Good Guy Maven being the hero we both want and deserve.
THANK YOU MAVEN! I was one of the ones that couldn't hear the VHS
You bet… sorry for the inconvenience brotha!
same here ty
00:10 Non-wrestling fans every time they meet a wrestling fan 😢
I mean, that ain't gonna stop me from watching just for the funny
"She's a stunt granny." Ah, the memes..... LOL!!!!
Maven is right too
When I did Indy wrestling in the mid 90s i was a heel and we had a female plant (who was a wrestler as well as our head cook with a few other wrestlers) and we did a pile driver on a chair bump with her pretending to be a fan to get me heel heat
We definitely wouldn't of done that with a plant who wasn't a worker
Brian Zane moment
I thought that was Mae Young
Greatest line ever to be put to film
Look up hulk hogan old woman wcw… I think that’s what they based it on
I just had a realizating this very night: Wrestling is like magic, done right, you'll never notice it. Done wrong, you or your opponent will get hurt. Thanks for conferming this to me
Hi Maven, thanks for basically being you. You're the prime example of dreams can come true and in your case being a wrestler. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Also being a great wrestler who shouldn't had been let go)
Lol, MVP as a cop and Sheamus as a security guard 😂
Why is salem the cat the narrorator lol
I was looking for this comment.
I almost commented "I never knew Nick Bakay was a wrestling fan." 😂
I outright said “SALEM!?” 😂😂😂
😂
"I'm waiting for Hilda, Zelda or Sabrina interrupt him 😂
I’m sure you seen a Stunt Granny, Maven. Mae Young was there your entire 2001-2005 Run
Mae Young didn't use stunt doubles 😂 You don't know much about that tough old bird do you? Go watch her matches when she was younger.
Mae Young demanded Bubba Ray Dudley powerbomb her off of the titantron and through the table. She told Bubba Ray she'd beat the hell out of him if he didn't "Lay it on." She was breaking the arms of men for real back in the 1950's. Absolute legend.
@@bepbep7418 you drunk, bud? Wrestlers don’t use stunt doubles unless it’s a backstage segment. Also ive seen Mae Young Wrestle when you’re still in ya dad’s sack
This reminds me of the series exposing magic by the Masked Magician
I only watched that for his assitants 😂😂😂
Same production company
Was a kid in the mid 80s watching wrestling. Had plenty of sleepovers, foam pads laid out and fold out couches preped. We would rent all the pay per views we couldn't watch on VHS. Thank you so much for doing this! Stay strong brother, and know that a 1st Cav vet loves the work you do!
A fellow 1BCT 1CD vet here that loves this channel. Be safe and make sure to check on your battle buddies!
You should collab with Brian Zane from Wrestling with Wregret, that would be awesome.
💡
Got to remember that video from 1991 …. 30 years ago
Things change and so do some of the moves from then to know !
But it’s a good thing to watch !
In the city of Tupelo Mississippi
the arena will not allow signs to be brought in and that’s sucks taking our signs for at the door … not being able to support our favorite wrestlers
Never new wooden planks were put under the mat that part blew my mind more than I wanted it to😂 awesome video
Hes definitly correct about the ring. I use to work fir the Michigan Concert Service and took apart the three rings at WCW World War 3 in Detroit Michigan in November 1998. You van even see me on the pay per view when DDP jumps up on announcment table with U.S. belt on. Its was awesome!
thats kevin nash narrating in a mask in the beginning... lol, unmistakable voice.
WOW! Maven! the growth on your subs is insane! Been with this channel since your first few thousands. Keep it up!
Maven, you have been making some great content lately. Very insightful keep it up brother. Thanks.
I practice wushu (Chinese martial arts), and we use similar auditory techniques for solo forms. A quick stomp or slap of the forearm can make a move sound devastating.
I missed your run in the company but man your RUclips Chanel is great . Keep it going Maven you're killin it.
I've seen this several times over the years. Very interesting documentary and for its time(before the internet), i'd even say "groundbreaking. Obviously one thing that may cause it to be "inaccurate," or better yet "dated" is that this information came from both
1. Non-WWE talent (Harley Race was the "booker" here. Even his buddies said he wasn't a particularly good one. Not sure if there were any WCW guys here.)
2. Talent trained at a different point.
Obviously things change as time goes by. Training and wrestling techniques evolve as different talent comes in and offers something new.
Like you said at the end, this doc was really just giving fans a taste of the behind the scenes.
I again read "Marek Health" as "Mark Health" and it still seemed fitting.
Man this video brought back so many memories. My mom used to drive us around in a 1999 Ford Windstar and I would watch this VHS tape on replay for some reason as a kid lol
You just fell for one of the five tricks that RUclipsrs use, the re-upload. You might have thought you already watched this video but in reality this is a different, edited, video with sound issues fixed. Stay tuned to the end of the video to see all the RUclips tricks that Maven uses to provide high quality videos for his audience.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it's a work brother
13:04 biggest example I can think of here is Nic Nemmeth, AKA Dolph Ziggler. In recent years, Nemmeth has become truly beloved for just how stellar he was at making other wrestlers look good and how much effort he truly put into his matches. It really is a shame he didn’t get a bigger push from WWE, but he is the biggest example of selling = stardom I’ve ever seen
Maven you need to be in the Hall Of Fame❤
@051jimmy?
I was 10 when this aired and this is how I found out wrestling was fixed lol.
@@mojabaka If you read Facebook comments about wrestling, MANY adults seem to think it's a non scripted and competitive sport. It's actually quite terrifying...
MAVEN, idk what the odds are of you seeing this BUT I want to let you know your content is genuine gold. On top of being informative and entertaining, I look forward to your positivity, humbleness, gratitude, passion, and kind aura that you have. It makes it such a pleasure to watch you. I love wrestling in general, but I literally stay tuned to your uploads because they genuinely make me feel better.. after a bad day I can put on one of your vids and forget about it. Your honesty and sense of humor is refreshing dude and wish the best for you and would love to see you doing something else for the WWE like what you do here. Thank you for the refreshing content, as I said …. Can turn my day around… great work Maven!!!
Maven really should make a Royal Rumble appearance as a special guest. He has so much subscribers on RUclips people still do remember him and respect his knowledge about the business WWE really should think about considering that one year.
U had me with the puma track suit w the matching hat. But when u used a VHS tape....I was absolutely hooked
cant get more 90's than Salem narrating the tape 👌
Wow this makes me miss these style of VHS tapes. I sweat the narrator (and probably loads of other people involved in this project) worked on that secrets of magic series (filmed after this) and classics like the ‘can’t be shown on tv’ documentaries and deadliest police chases 😩
Great Work Mave...
Just gone north of 400k subscribers, well done...
I can genuinely say Ive been here since day 1...Keep up the good work brother
When I was a kid I was kinda disenchanted when I found out wrestling wasn’t “real” but, now that I’m an adult, learning about all the behind the scenes stuff makes it more entertaining
That “cop” is the true MVP…
😉
I was so young but I definitely remember when this came out & I definitely remember a 9 or 10 year old me watching it..
I tried out for a local company. I could front bump, ass bump, but could not tuck my neck worth a damn for a back bump. I swear I concussed myself. lol
I feel like if I did one back bump I would be out of commission for at least a week.
I choose to believe Maven has had that LL Cool J outfit since the 90s and didn’t get it just for this video 😂
I think that jumpsuit did something to you mavin i can feel the passion you have for pro wrestling. While takin us to school. I think you still have heart for sport When you gonna get back in the ring.🤙
The only secret I want to know is how you still have a working VHS player
Spent his severance pay on one 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
It’s honesty not that hard
Gen Alpha kids today wondering what is a VHS player??
The last few years that they were being sold they cost as low as 28$, so people bought a few.
Mike Modest was one of those masked men. He was a very solid wrestler. He taught me alot. Much respect. He was on Beyond the Mat.
Don’t call it a comeback, Maven’s been here for years!😂😂 love the suit, but more importantly, love the video, Maven!!!
Maven leaning in and telling us the secret of predetermined matches was funny as hell ! Lol the WWE needs to hire you as a commentator or something for development of other wrestlers ! You’re so dope !
I predict Maven will reach 500k subs by the end of July 2024, mid August the latest.
I 🙏🏽 you are right
It's didn't happen
I will never grow tired of hearing Maven break down in-ring psychology. I’d love to hear him break down Roman’s COVID era empty arena matches when you could hear him talking down his opponent
Pulled out the velour 🤣🤣🤣 I see you champ 😂😂😂
The tables part reminded me of what Mick Foley said about "gimmicked" tables and chairs: "Man I wish we used gimmicked tables and chairs, that would have been so much easier on my body"
HAPPY Friday maven love your content channel for 6 months any way have a wonderful weekend
Bruce Santee sighting!! Him and MVP as security for Kurt angle during the Kurt angle invitational when he wrestled Roderick strong. Haha
I mean it's fake...but it's well executed by incredible athletes, and some are multi talented by being not only athletes but some what actors....nothing to be upset about wrestling fans know the dedication it takes to pull it off
grow so balls. Wake up
@@twizzy585ots It isn't fake! It is scripted. Do you call an actor fake? No, his an actor who plays a role. A Wrestler is an athlete who plays a role. Neither is fake.
@LadyDragonsblood scripted equals fake....are movies real ? Get over it and stop being sensitive
@@twizzy585ots As usual my point is missed. Do you call an actor fake? No, you call him an actor. You casual fans, that actually know nothing about wrestling except WWE, are just hopeless.
2:52 holy Jesus.. seeing Lash LeRoux just for that small clip made my day already
Damn. How did I miss that VHS tape on wrestling??? I would of been 17 ish. And we watch darn near everything
Me and my best friend and her siblings watched this when it came on in the fall of 1998
Nbc did a lot of Pro wrestling content specials in 1998 and 1999 as that was at the peak of the Monday Night Wars
E Channel did the same thing
It was a special that would air on Fox I believe. It would air other specials like Magic Secrets Revealed. Oh the 90s!
i watched it here on youtube at some point. It's still available.
I remember watching being televised in the 90s in the uk
I broke my hand just the way you told us at 08:10 when I was 13 and fought my neighbour for fun 😂
Another great video Maven!
This is awesome Maven 2 on one day
A re-upload 😁 with more sound
WWE's modern ring, now, has got to be different and softer than AEW's or a traditional ring. The sound on AEW's mat when sound someone hits it- it's like wood-on-metal, and no bass. WWE's ring though moves up and down about 8"-10" (maybe more) in the center- it's like there isn't any metal under the wood. And it helps make that bassy sound (especially during Fox's broadcasts which look terrible but sound really good) when someone hits it. And yes I know there are microphones under the ring to help capture that sound...and I know all about shaping sound with an EQ.
"It wasnt completely the shits" 😂
😂
Kane first started wrestling in the mid to late 90s and he grabbed the fan out the crowd and ran him into the steps I think but I've seen them have plants in the crowd a few times
Really enjoyed this video. Very educational!
🙏🏽🙏🏽
"I can't believe he pie-faced the granny!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That was hilarious 😂😂😂
If Maven was a professor for all my college classes, I would have my PhD in all my favorite majors. Love your content sir🖐💪
So nice, I watched it twice
I only clicked on this to see if it was the first wrestling expose I ever watched in the 90s and you didn't disappoint. Oh the memories
