She's an absolute delight, always dug her work!
i was just thinking about julia sweeney and how you haven’t interviewed her yet! i got so excited bc the reconciliation sketch is one of my all time favorites. she’s so wonderful. thank you so much for having her on.
Julia is an INCREDIBLE writer. I’ve been reading her book, “If It’s Not One Thing, It’s Your Mother,” for about six months because I don’t want it to end! Love her!
This has become my go-to podcast. I grew up doing impressions of Dana Carvey's impressions from SNL, and it's great to vicariously catch up with so many talented comedians who influenced who I am today in such a positive way.
Fantastic episode! Love, love, love Julia! She is so genuine, no artifice and great interview guys!! No talking over or doing hacky bits! Great!
Julia playing Mary Todd Lincoln opposite Joe Flaherty in the "Abe Lincoln Time Machine" sketch always has me cracking up. 😆
"Because you are a character doesn't mean that you have character." She is a babe!!!! I will always pine for Julia. "Say goodnight, Raquel".
Love show guys keep it flowing.
Man I love this podcast so much! I even love how there is no video. Perhaps that's my favorite part. I just feel it's more relaxing and leaves my imagination open too . Thanks for doing all you do everyone ! 😊
I love the story about the sketch David wrote for Julia, that meant so much for her!!
I think it was so sweet that David didn’t remember, shows it was just a natural act of kindness.
Julia Sweeney...😍😍😍😍😍
Chris Farley was a comedic genius (personal opinion) his hilarious imitation of Giuliani's son was pure gold!
Dave & Dana are hilarious
great podcast 👏🏾
Julia is one of the few cast members who are far more interesting off the show than they were on it.
❤ hearing you three talk! Julia has a great voice
I just heard about David spade yesterday . Never heard of him before. I'm so glad I found this podcast! It's definitely my favorite new show. !! 😊❤
Absolutely great!
I loved the Pat character
I died of laughter from that sad story about Julia bringing her Pat outfit all the way on the airplane to New York and that senile old Lorne forgetting all about it
Discovered your podcast about 6 months ago, and absolutely love the show. With so much amazing talent that you guys have on in front of the camera, I’d love to see Jennifer Aspinall or some of the Makeup Artist’s that worked with you guys possibly be a guest.
Keep kickin ass and rock on guys !
I have watched the older SNL clips and have recognized her because I'm a huge Frasier fan; she played a character on there for a few episodes and now when I see her in SNL clips, I'm like "omg how did I not know she was on SNL?!" lol.
Dana and David I love your podcast! I was born in 86 and grew up with you guys in my life. On SNL to movies. Dana you were great in Wayne's Word and my personal favorite Opportunity Knocks. David you're my favorite with Just Shoot Me and of course Joe Dirt and everything you have been in and all your stand up. This is a great podcast but my one tiny criticism is: let's ask the guest why they got into groundlings or 2nd city or whatever it is. I liked when cheri Oteri explained how she got into it. Thanks guys!
I feel this is all on phone. These are legends get them in a studio and video.
Has David ever talked about his time on Just Shoot Me!? He was the funniest as Dennis Finch.
Love her.
Shittt!!! I had that same pressure twice lately while sleeping that woke me up and I live in Novato, about 10 miles north of Mill Valley! I lived in Mill Valley many years ago on West Blithedale in the redwoods, yeah probably haunted. 😳
Hey now!
“Who’s your favorite rap singer? Is Dr Dre really a doctor?” You guys make me laugh.
Why does the description say this was recorded before the strike? They can’t do podcasts during a writer’s strike?
"If minds are wholly dependent on brains and brains on biochemistry, and biochemistry (in the long run) on the meaningless flux of the atoms, I cannot understand how the thought of those minds should have any more significance than the sound of the wind in the trees." - CS Lewis
“Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!
But he loves you. He loves you, and he needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!” - George Carlin
@@SphyraminxOne of the best comedic take downs of religious beliefs. Julia Sweeney’s has another. But I am reminded me of a Susan B Anthony quote, “I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I noticed it always coincides with their own desires.”
@@thelostone6981 So true. Funny how that works. That’s a good one.
@@Sphyraminx Only a fool confuses religion with God.
@thelostone6981 so smart, yet u completely missed the point. Atheist clown show per usual. Rock exploded and created everything, right? 😆
When a guy has sex with Pat and still can't tell, there really wasn't anywhere else to go with it :D
Come to Europe- in most places, if someone asks you whether you believe in god or gods you can answer as you truly feel without shame- i.e. it's generally much less stressful, similar to asking someone what their favorite color is. The probability of someone trying to convert you on the spot based on your answer is basically zero.
People forget that Julia was also in Pulp Fiction.
I was wondering if they were going to ask her about it
I’m disappointed about Dana not mentioning he was Pat’s love interest, Chris.
My favorite This American Life episode is the one where Julia Sweeney talks about her brother's cancer. (dark but hilarious) Love her brand of humor.
Good episode boys... I wish yall asked her about Pulp Fiction though!
It's Pat!
Time plays cruel tricks on some people and thus their beliefs. Or maybe vice versa. The reason Einstein believed in God was, among other things, "spooky action at a distance" which was this inexplicable communication between particles across galaxies.
How are you behind smartless? You’re number one in my book ! ❤
A 63 year old 18 year old atheist -- Yeah. I'm onboard. I get it. But "militant atheist" is so 2005. Oh and this is a comedy podcast. Love your work. Really, I do.
Damn I had to go back and look at an older pic of her. Didn't recognize her at first

I didn’t think of Pat as gay. I loved to see everyone’s obsession with finding out if she was male or female bc it was a mirror that we all do that and what difference does it make
She was great in reservoir dogs
Dang, 8 million down the toilet lol. Wonder if it made even half that back...
No episode would be complete without Dana mispronouncing someone's name. Frank Gorschwin?
Is it a diss that they only offered their emails? 🤔
Ironically, Julia SWEENEY forgot about the SWEENEY sisters, a sketch on SNL from right before her era that starred multiple women cast members. This is in reference to them saying there weren't any sketches starring women. Nora Dunn also had The Pat Stevens Show sketch, and I believe another talk show parody with her and Jan Hooks as the leads of the sketch. There was also the Delta Delta Delta sketch with Siobhan Fallon and other women leading it. So definitely not accurate to say there weren't sketches led by women from her era of the show, or before it.
Wow, a whole 4, maybe 4.5 with women lead sketches over an 8-10 year period! You're so right, Julia Sweeney (a woman who worked on the actual show) must be inaccurately remembering her experiences with sexism and misogyny.
I want to be Julia Sweeney's friend now, so I can hook up with the ghost debunker guy, because that sounds like a fun time lol.
The ghost debunker is Kenny Biddle, and he does great work 😄

Jesus just film these podcasts. You're view's will skyrocket!
I eat early. Can I come?
Artists!! Please stop questioning yourselves. Three brilliant artists who have no history of controversial or insensitive or mean-comedy having to question their expressions is disturbing to hear.
When I originally saw “It’s Pat” in my youth and at a re-viewing today - it is clear to me it is NOT a commentary or judgement about the Pat character itself. It is clearly not about Pat; it’s about the people around Pat. People who would probably claim to be accepting and socially progressive, people who “don’t care” about who you are as a person. They would say “oh, Pat I don’t care if you are a man or woman, but PLEASE I need to know which one you are!” That’s the comedic tension. There is no anti-sexuality, anti-androgyny or anti-anything messaging in the skit.
I could similarly ‘defend’ other skits discussed here as ‘can’t do that today’.
Woke-ness is not the problem suffocating artistic expression today; the problem is a non-engaged, barely-listening audience that doesn’t have the patience to hear any message that requires deeper engagement. And, the audience, not the artist - is the one hearing anti-X messages because they are just picking up a word here in their as they speed-read art today.
I have three beagles, I know dumb. Yeah, no to religion and deities. Reading is fundamental.
imagine if dana did the overtly macho gay man character.
Can she say “I mean” any more?
Awesome show! 👏👏👏I was raised Catholic, but became a much kinder person when I escaped religion. I probably never would have left off eating other animals if I'd remained religious, even though the Bible teaches "blessed are the merciful." The vast majority of vegans I know are atheists. Religion doesn't = morality. Take a look at all the religious leaders who are pedophiles (and not just in the Catholic faith either). Love Julia Sweeney! Another fave comedian who talks about his atheism is Ricky Gervais who also happens to be vegan. ✌️♥️🐣
she was hot in pulp fiction
It sounds like Julie's "Al Franken did nothing wrong" show could have worked if it was on Fox and performed by Glenn Beck.
But to make it funny it would have had to have been her playing as Glenn Beck. But I feel like there would have been a real choice of either making it funny or helping Al. Not that she was wrong. Just, defending someone who crossed some lines, entered some gray areas, with comedy while not looking like you're blaming the victim... That would have been a tough hoe to row.
Does Dana know that when he tells each guest the same stories, we’re hearing them every episode?
Julia’s support for Al is completely correct. He’s a wonderful and talented person
She's a typical liberal. Doesn't see the light about how crushing and oppressive their policies are until it affects them or someone they care about.
Atheist: me : zero reaction : ho cares
Love the podcast, but this was not a home run. She’s never been one of the stand outs in my mind. I think she’s being dishonest about what made the Pat sketches funny, they were absolutely making fun of Pat. She can’t just rewrite history now because society frowns on it.
Her explanation felt genuine to me. Also, Julia doesn't need to impress anyone. Her career is long over and she has a history of being genuine about her beliefs and opinions regardless of what bridges might be burned.
Wow, what a stinker. When are you guys interviewing Chris Parnell?
I'D have to imagine this will be the least viewed episode of all time when all said and done. I know I am being a dick, but really??? Life is short. No time to give the person another 15 mins. I think she might have stole her first 15 mins while Lorne, Paul, and Paul were out in the Hamptons playing "just the tip"...

I used to be an atheist, but then I realized there had to be some unchanging Standard outside of myself. So that, for example, if I wanted to be a better person I would be required to move towards the BEST person. You can't get better without going towards some unchanging Standard of BEST. Otherwise it's subjective illusion. So, right there, if you think it's possible to get better as a person, you're admitting an outside unchanging BEST person exists (God). From here if you want to figure out God's identity, then you just have to think: If God is what's best, then God can't let people wander just around in the dark. God would have to bring some light. So now just look at all the messages in the world & see what message is the most powerful in terms of global reach. What you end up finding is that the widest distributed, most published, most translated, most quoted message of all time is Jesus' message from the Bible. No other message is anywhere close to it. So if God is best, which makes it possible for you to be a better person, then God is Jesus.
You took a leap of faith by assuming it’s not subjective illusion. You acted as if things being a subjective illusion, could not possibly be reality, so you inherently have a faith.
@@jasonmerriman2699 It doesn't take that much faith to believe that "better" exists given the fact that everyone on earth also believes in this concept of "better". So it's universal, and the next step is explaining how this is possible. What you find is that it's possible because everyone, whether they know it or not, are directly linked with an ultimate Standard of BEST existing beyond humanity & the universe. That's why people have this belief of better.
@@TruthSpeaks your rationale for getting better ASSUMES there is a standard of better. That is a key component of your argument. It could be a subjective illusion. You can’t say it couldn’t without making your argument circular. I’m not saying it is subjective illusion. I don’t care. I’m saying that you can’t disregard subjective illusion of a standard for better. If so, you’re being disingenuous to yourself. 🤷♂️
@@jasonmerriman2699 This is only a starting argument. The point of the argument is that if you think it's more likely that "better" exists in any way, such as being a "better" person or making the world "better", then an ultimate independent Standard of BEST must exist. The identity of that Standard would logically be God. This allows it to be possible to be a better person because you're moving towards the Standard of the BEST PERSON. The fact is, even atheists think it's possible to make things "better" in some way, which gives more weight to my argument. Given the evidence here, it's more likely that a true better does exist, which means God exists. This is a starting point, and this same conclusion can be found in many other ways. Btw, I used to be an atheist myself.
@@TruthSpeaks all of the words are worthless after “if you think”. That just proves the entirety is an opinion. That’s cool. But to act like there’s a logical argument when near the beginning you say “if you think”…that’s simply not a sound argument. And I see your use of Occam’s razor but it again is just a call to do”what you think”. Which is a gut feeling and not logic. You can believe in God but to act like you can prove as though you’re St Thomas Aquinas is silly. His arguments have been seen as hollow for hundreds of years of by Christian and secular philosophers.
Checking out of the discussion, all the best.
Julia is hilarious. Her funniest joke ever is when she says "no one" believes in God.
Because over 270,000,000 Americans believe in a Creator.
I love the podcast, but I turned this episode off in the beginning after the anti-God talk.
So boring
