Lyle, Dude, HILARIOUS !!! Being in my fifties, and generally hot rodding since about 1980 or so, I've heard these and more. Here are three of my top favorites: ( Not necessarily Corvette specific) 1. The guy who claims his parent inherited p.o.s. high school car had 500 hp easy. 2. His car is in the 10s as it sits, and you look down and see 70 series radials.(1980s) 3. The installation of the dreaded, " tree corta cam " , because everyone whose anyone installs a .750 lift cam in a stock carp motor.I This last one came from a guy with wheelie bars on a car that ran 15s. Yea, it's the little things in life. Stay safe,
Very good. I can relate to at least one of these stories; the rain. I had a very nice '04 at the time. My reply was, "Well, that's to bad, because you have never experienced how great these cars are in the rain." Amazing!
You definitely brought a much needed "lighter moment" in the midst of our current environment with this upload. Thank you so much Kyle. Now here's something I bet you didn't know. My C5 ZO6 is made of Titanium and is rarest of the rare because it will never rust. Oh wait, maybe it's just the exhaust. 🤦🏼♂️😉 Save the Wave.🙋🏼♂️
My 03 Vette has seen rain but I sure try to avoid it just because of the increased clean up time, but if it happens, well I've cleaned it up before and I guess I'll do it again.
Reminds me of when I was shopping for a C3. Came across a few yellow on green C3s claimed to be a rare color combo. To your point, because it's rare it's not always popular!
Great vid! When I am at shows or cruises with my Vette, I often stand near spectators and eavesdrop on their conversations abount my car. Usually some know-it-all is trying to impress their buddies or girl with their so-called "knowledge". Much of what you say I have heard these clowns say as well, makes me cringe, why not just ask?
And my favorite, “I once owned a ‘72 vette with factory installed side pipes”. (The 69 was the only C3 with the factory installed side pipe N14 option)
Thank you for the education Lyle. :) "Rare" is the one that gets me. How do they know? But I must admit, I had a 1970 convertible, 454, 390 HP, automatic. Gold in color with a cream colored rag top and I've never seen another one. Sadly I sold it to a dealer who's wife totaled it.
Being around car shows and the racetrack just about all my life I have always enjoyed the " My Friend Had" or "I Knew someone who had" Stories.. Makes for an entertaining day.
Good stuff, top speed of a fully loaded Cobra gunship is about 125-130. The fastest "chop-pah" is the Chinook at 180. So..., even a 140mph '72-'73 C3 Vette is possible, it'd be extremely dangerous, and unlikely. However, there are some track cars that are highly modified that could do it. But, I believe the guy you are talking about got that reference from "Gone in 60 Seconds"
If youve ever been the Bowling Green KY factory you'll see the rain machine that each car goes in to check for leaks .. they put them through hurricane rain as the last step of the assembly ... if you haven't gone to the factory you should, I highly recommend it ! Anyone have an 83 Vette ? Lol.
Doesn't this guy know how rare it was for a particular corvette to be made with these common options, in this specific color on that particular Tuesday afternoon?!?! Clearly he doesn't know what he's talking about.... Thanks for the video, love the channel.
Well this video talks about things I heard too LOL I don't know how many arguments I had with the guys about the ''matching number'' thing. I can claim loud and proud that the one I have, a 72 big block 4 speeds coupe IS a real matching number, and it did see a lot of rain and snow as it was daily driven by the first owner. (The car came from Montreal) The rust destroyed frame I had to change proves it. Good one Sir I bet you could do a few videos about that.
Great subject. Yeah car shows can get people coming up with some stories. That’s why I leave my Stainless Steel 83 - V6 - C3.5 at home most of the time. Hard to keep it under 90mph in school zones.
There actually was a metal bodied Corvette although it wasn’t steel. It was the one-off XP-895 concept Corvette built in 1972 in collaboration with Reynolds Aluminum. I guess if someone claimed they had it then they could say it’s a metal body AND really “rare”! But that would mean they also stoled it from GM’s Heritage collection. Lol Btw, great video. Really enjoyed watching it! 😁👍
I liked your story about a Corvette out running a Huey. My car of choice when I was a kid was '69 Camaros. I had 7 of them (not all at the same time). I used to street drive and bracket race one Camaro in particular at the track. It ran a best of 12.84 @ 117 , but it was a consistent high 12 second car. Not a big deal today, but in the late '70's, early 80's, it was a pretty fast street car. A kid with a 1970 Mustang GT with a 390 decided he wanted to race me. He said his car was a 9 second car, but it didn't sound very healthy, so I said sure. We line up, and go . My Camaro went A to B just like normal, and I never saw the Mustang till I hit my brakes and started to slow down. He told everyone I had sand bagged him, and my car just had to be faster than 9 seconds, because his car did 9's ........ People are funny. Good video.
I have another one that you did not mention people talk about their Corvettes exceeding 200 miles an hour LOL. I just need to get my car up to 88 miles an hour🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🤓🤓🤓

@@csvette Lyle what years were no Corvettes painted black from the Factory? I believe it was late 60’s to mid 70’s do you have any information on this???
I was told that these two guys were in a 76' Vette and at 200 mph. the driver said now the turbo is going to kick in. When they finally got stopped at a gas station a state trooper pulled in and said we are looking for a Corvette like this one and he then went and got a tape measure and measured the engine and said that it (the engine) was to big to be allowed on the road, and they impounded the Corvette. At this point I asked what kind of motor was in it, he said "one of those special motors out of a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang GT!". This person is my older brother and I know this seems hard to believe but he doesn't know crap about cars (sarcastically as I could possibly make that sound)!
Okay I may be wrong, but I seem to recall reading that the red L88, "Old Scrappy," did hit 200 mph on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans. Theoretically, with a ton of weight reduction and aero mods, it is possible to get a C3 to that speed and not fly.
Must have been a c3. I drag races my 64 coupe c2, and nearing 100 mph the front end came way up. I never hit top speed with it, I think the front tires would come off the ground.
John Greenwood went well over 200 mph at Daytona. His brother Burt spoke about John at the National Corvette Museum. Some pretty cool interviews you can watch if you go to the NCM's website.
I know the scene you are referring to, but in this case I'm pretty sure it happened--although not with the claimed result. The car owner was high-up in the SF community at Ft. Bragg and has done some really crazy stuff in his day. :)

Lyle, I would like to ask about your opinion regarding high speeds on the C2:s, C3:s and C4:s. Could you say "don´t exceed XXX mph on a C3"?? I have driven my C3:s slightly above 200 km/h (125 mph) and my C4 in about 245 km/h (153 mph). I´m mostly talking about front end lift or "becoming air borne". If you see someone running to their car to cover it because it's raining, it's not because "it's never seen rain". It's because these guys spend hours detailing their cars for the show and they don't really want to have to redo it after the rain and before judging. And WHY would you stick your nose in and say anything when two people are talking? Even if you know that what one of them is saying is wrong, don't stick your nose in. That would make you one big know it all............the one kind of person nobody can stand. We've all found all of those people at car shows. From small to massive. But to each his own.
"Numbers matching is not nearly as important as the condition of the car" Now that is gospel right there. NM is nothing but fairy dust, sprinkled into the profound story telling of many a Corvette owner or wish-I-was-one. Smile and nod politely, when you get some of that talk.
As far as top speed goes for a C3 hitting 200 mph it's been done. John Greenwood went over that at Daytona. John was the man when it comes to racing C3 Corvettes. He did lots of things to make them really fast. More than just a driver. John was an innovator. You can read about what he did and listen to interviews with his brother Burt on the NCM's website. Plus there are videos posted here on youtube with Burt talking about their racing days. John was also working on making the C4 chassis better for racing when he got out of racing.
Oh yes...Greenwood had some amazing cars and was one heck of an engineer...the people I'm talking about are the ones with a stock 195 hp motor, budget tires and an exhaust leak that claim to have performed the feat! :) Lyle
"Never seen rain." Better bragging rights: "Daily driven, even in snow!"
How about the ultra rare "barn find"? Drives me crazy to read that in an ad. There are more"barn finds" out there than there are barns!

If it is a C2 or C3? About 130 will get the nose light. :)
The C5 just hunkers down the faster you go, so at 175 it is glued to the pavement thanks to crafty aerodynamics. :)
@@csvette Good to know, thanks. I live in Illinois and roads suck due to winter. Feel lucky you dont have to deal with snow and salt in Florida. Makes the road expand and contract and then the snow plows tear it up worse.
@@therabbitswhisper I grew up on the South Side of Chicago...I totally know all about that! :) Lyle
@@csvette i just need to leave illinois lol
How about the ‘82 collector edition ads when they list it as “rare”. Rare, sure 1 out of 6,500 is not rare
Excellent! HAHA
There are two kind of vette owners...the real car guy and the cocky zero knowledge one
I have rare 1976 200 mile an hour C3 Steel body fuel injected Big block Lol
Thanks you your C5 C6 and especially C3 C4 is not rare unless you got a ZR1 Grandsport Callaway and some pace cars
Rare is for steaks.
Everyone has a story.
Just listen and nod your head.
:) Lyle
