    I remember when the issue of the wire bristles coming off and getting left on the grates was getting a lot of buzz online. After that I continued to use my wire brush, but kept it in mind and made sure to give the grill a good look over. Well, in the year or so that followed I did indeed find a small, fine metal wire on my grill one afternoon. The wire brush went into the garbage and another hasn't been used since.
    I have used the steel coil model and it works fairly well. Also, the wooden "paddle" style works quite a bit better than they suggest. It isn't as good as a wire bristle brush, on that I agree, but it works decently and it took me nowhere near 10 minutes to develop those burnt in grooves that allow for good cleaning. It was much less work in my experience to get it "grill ready."
    Using a slightly less effective grill cleaning method is worth the peace of mind for me, but to each their own.

      Yup. Had a family member end up chewing into a wire. We only use the brushes with the red wires. That way we can physically see them well before they end up in food. They were dismissive of the issue in the video - it just hasn't happened to them yet!

    • @jjpp2216
      @jjpp2216 3 года назад +5

      My experience is exactly yours-almost. In our case, the bristle did end up in someone’s food (and mouth). Thankfully, he detected it and spit it out before any damage was done.
      I find the coil type works well, although mine has a single row of coils, not triple, and I think that’s better because you don’t have to come in at the exact right angle to get all three rows working.
      Overall, I find people make far too much fuss over cleaning their grills. If you let it run for a few minutes when done cooking, then heat it up for a good 15 the next time, 90% of everything burns off and a light scrub with any of these does the job just fine. It’s not this dramatic scouring of inches of grease that they suggest it to be.

    I use two brushes. First a good wire brush to clean the grill. Next I use a stainless steel pad brush to finish clean everything including any wire brush pieces that may have come off on the other brush. Using both is actually very quick, thorough and safe. And since we're talking clean grills, don't forget to always apply some vegetable oil before and after grilling to the grill. It makes clean up go much more easily and helps protect your grill. "Grilling Season"...I don't understand people who only use their grill for a season. Mine gets used year round.
    That stated I take issue with their casual dismissal of the nylon bristles. Those aren't for regular grills. Those are for grills (Typically pellet smokers) that have ceramic coated grates that metal bristles tend to damage. Cleaning those grates cold isn't a problem. As for those rare times you do need to hot clean, the Kona is what you need. I truly appreciate what ATK does with these reviews, but as someone who uses multiple types of grills and smokers nearly daily and have done so for decades, you guys missed the boat on this one. The weber is fine for general grill cleaning, but honestly it bends and twists and is a general hassle. It is the best of the worst so to speak in that really just about all grill brushes of this type are just awful.

    The best method for my stainless grill grates isn't a brush! ATK has some excellent advice on cleaning dutch ovens and pans with burned stuck food, boil it. I use the same technique for my stainless grates. Yesterday I grilled 4 marinated pork loins which turned out great, but the grates looked awful, they were black, and the residue would not budge with any brush. The answer is very easy and the cleanup was too.
    Get a full, or 2/3 size cookie sheet, just large enough to hold your grates. I stack 2 grates and fit them on a 2/3 cookie sheet. Put the sheet on your range top burners with the grates and fill with water safely below the top edge of the pan,, and add some dawn or any dishwashing detergent. The height of a cookie sheet is only 1" so you won't have much space, but I find it just enough for this to work. Turn on the burners under the cookie sheet and heat the water, just under the boiling point, you don't want to make a mess. Heat it for 10 minutes or more, until the dirt softens. Much of the dirt will just fall off and the water will soon look brown. Let this cool until it is manageable and use stainless steel scrubbers to wipe away the big stuff, Scotch-brite makes some scrubbers that work, or anything similar. If the water is too hot to touch and you can't wait to clean it, you can try to use tongs to hold the scouring pad. After the bulk of the residue is gone, and it has cooled, move the grates to the sink and you can finish it off with heavy duty scour pads like the Scotch Advanced Extreme Scour pads, or any heavy duty scour pads to bring back the shine. No wrestling with brushes that never work. And your shiny stainless will be shiny again. Give yourself a break, this is so much easier and more effective than brushing. Good luck!

    I don't grill often enough to really need grill tools, and I just use a few wire ties to tie the grill grate to the fence and blast it with my pressure washer. It gets clean instantly with no work, especially if you spray it with vinegar before and let it sit for a few minutes while you set up the washer and clean the grill out.
    Typically I just make a day of it... I wash my grill and leave the washer set up to wash my motorcycle too.. and I'll hit a few spots if I need too... haha why not clean the fence and driveway while I'm at it?! The mist is nice when it's hot and pressure washing is super satisfying.
    So yeah, if you can get a small battery operated self contained one, it might be worth it for people who hate to scrub.

    I’ve been using the Weber brush for as long as they have been making them. I have tried other offerings and nothing that I have tried works nearly as well. I have never had any problem with metal bristles in my food. I believe that those who do are probably using a cheap brush, using it after it’s worn out, using it on a cold grate (which causes you to bear down too hard, making dislodging bristles more likely) or not using it before and after every use, causing buildup on the grates, making it more likely for bristles to become lodged in the buildup. Also, I use a paper towel which is dampened with oil to wipe down my grates, before and after each use, which also helps prevent rust from becoming an issue. As usual, poor maintenance habits bring on most problems, causing most mishaps.

    • @hogsandsooners
      @hogsandsooners 3 года назад

      As a side note, I only use a charcoal grill. If you use a grill that has a special coating on the grates, do a little research or follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for cleaning your specific model. I am unfamiliar with pellet grills and kamado-style cookers as I only use a Weber to grill. I like the low cost/low tech style of cooking which the little kettle provides. Also, my grill rarely goes two days in a row without being used and that’s year around, so gadgetry doesn’t tend to hold up, whereas, a Weber is good for decades, if you take care of it properly or until a wind storm blows your lid off onto the concrete and it no longer fits.

    These fine-wire brushes tend to leave broken wires behind on the grill (take a flaslight to the far rear of your grill to see them).
    Heavy-wire brushes clean better, last longer, the wires don't break nearly as easily, and when they do they are much easier to see and avoid eating. They're also used on restaurants.
    I've used one for two years so far and not one bristle has broken yet.

    @kevingray8616 3 года назад

    I’ve been using the Weber one for at least 7 years. Never a single loose bristle. I do recommend buying the long handled one as the short one does not work well when the grill is hot. (which again is the best time to clean the grill). Too short due to heat and hard to reach far side of grill. The long handle does begin to bend under pressure, but only when the brush is nearing its end of life because you start pushing harder to clean when the brush isn’t as good.

      They're going to do more burning, and cooking things that just stick more, than most people will be doing.
      And while I haven't used that particular board to clean a grill, I have actually used a piece of wood to try and clean a grill with lots of seriously burnt on food.

    Palmyra brushes come with shorter bristles too. By choosing that specific brush with longer bristles, you completely removed this type of brush from the comparison. But nylon or metal brushes with longers bristles would have created the same problematic result. This was just a poor example of what palmyra can actually do.. or not do!? I'm still wondering if palmyra brushes with proper small bristles or with the circular patterns, are any good. I'm a bit disappointed that you only had the one, with a completely different design than any other brushes.

    Grill brushes are going through trying to get banned in the UK because of how dangerous the bristles can be when swallowed. If you do a Google search there are lots of other ways of getting your grill clean without using one of these metal brushes. 😉
