Of course we have to give props to the entire band for their abilities but whoever does their sound engineering for live shows deserves tons of praise. I swear I’ve never heard a bad live recording from them.
The growls he does these days are very different from when he was younger. Not sure if he learned better technique to save his voice or if it’s just a function of being older. They are not as deep as they used to be. And all their newer stuff from the last few albums are all clean vocals.
There is a great documentary on the making of damnation and deliverance (has SW in it too). They don’t get into how he writes but they do show some parts of him working through stuff to fine tune.
Whatever he does to write, it’s worked for him for decades. I can only imagine a band member getting music from him for the first time. 😂

Haunting beginnings to powerful crescendos, kinda has a classical feel to it

Love the melodic mix of instruments. And he has such great clean voice that I can accept the growls ( sound like Mark Jansen of Epica ?) as merely contrast where necessary. And the keyboard did have a Zeppelin feel. Houses of the Holy maybe ?

I just can't get enough of that nasty riff at the end. Thanks for reacting to this one dude! You'd probably like their more recent albums given the lack of growls. I think the thing I like about his growls are how he uses it to kinda theme different parts, like either 2 different people or like the drowning thing from like Deliverance I think it is

All the recent Opeth albums is just singing and more hard rock and prog rock and not so much metal anymore, they are very good.

Mikeal started off with the growls because he wasn't confident with his clean vocals,+he loved death metal at the time.

Do u see the comparison to Rush, great musicianship and technicality but you're on the fence about the singing. Geddy? Not a fan of growling until I heard Ooeth.

Right... I get it. The vocal thing is a bit different only because when he sings clean I like it. Where with Geddy I idk his voice was just weird to me at the start (not anymore obviously).

Mikael is a growl icon but on this one it wasn't his best. Maybe you are used to nu metal "growls"? I appreciate your honesty
