  • I installed the Bixpy Jet on 2 Vibe Shearwater 125's. One with the Pedal Drive Adapter and the other with the Gravity Rudder Adapter. Then I tested them to see which way is better. This video might help you decide which way you want to mount your mazing Bixpy Jet!! Check out the Bixpy Pedal Drive Adapter here: bixpy.com/pedal-drive-adapter... And the Gravity Rudder Adapter here: bixpy.com/bixpy-diy-do-it-you...

Great video. I chose the pole mount version on my Bonafide, at first using foot steering, then switched to more efficient tiller extension steering, the biggest advantage over the two mounting methods tested in your video would be the fact that I can operate the jet at a depth the same as that of the kayak which I would estimate to be about 6” of water.

The Shearwater 125 has some steering/rudder mods that really affect the turning radius. I can see the rudder watching from the shore that the foot pedal steering isn't moving the rudder nearly as much as it has room for. You can add eye bolts to make the rudder move further side to side and bolt on a larger rudder fin and she'll turn within her own shadow.

That’s cool! Some great info as well! Personally, whenever I get my first kayak I think I’d stick with the pedal drive as I don’t plan on fishing tournaments but that would be amazing for tournaments that allow it!!! Allows you to get to places faster, less work, tighter spots are still accessible and it’s a lot less noticeable to the fish. Then again, I don’t have a kayak yet so I may be going back in my word when I do 🤣. All it takes is hard work and saving up! But if y’all have a free kayak, I’d be okay taking it 😂😂.

Something else worth testing is when using reverse to stop. At speed with the front-mounted motor, you should be able to go in to reverse and turn at the same time, making a much sharper than normal turn and a quick stop. Dodging something in the water or whatever. I think trying to do the same things with a rudder mount would not go as well. If you are moving at speed and turn and go to reverse at the same time in that setup, I bet it goes straight. The rudder would be trying to turn one way, and the motor would be fighting it to turn the other, making you go somewhat straight. You would also be thrust to the side and not forward so you would not stop as quickly. If you ran upon on a stump in the water, you would need to choose to stop or turn, but I dont think you could do both very well at the same time. Not as good as front mounted anyway. But that's just me guessing.

Definitely should turn tighter on the rudder because it is higher and pushing from the rear.
I would probably prefer the center mount so I have the option to still use the rudder when paddling is necessary. Also a super tight turn radius isn't very important (in my opinion) for kayaking..BUT if it becomes necessary, you'll do so better with a paddle, which goes back to using it in the center.
I cant wait to get a Bixpy. Lil more overtime & I'll get it.

As for your ff battery, try the noqua batteries. Mine runs all day in one charge.

Although I like the idea of the x-drive mounted motor, I would be concerned about accidentally running into shallows and damaging the motor or yak. The motor doesn’t kick up if it hits and obstacle like it would on the rudder.

Good video, Michael. I run my Bixby on the rudder. What body of water is this? It's beautiful.

The Rudder option is a good solid option. That is Lake Conasauga in the Cohutta Wilderness in North Georgia

Has anybody tried to cut the blue shaft yet? I don’t like how deep it goes below the kayak.

I’d like to see how fast the shearwater would go with BOTH motors on the boat, going full power!

    • @MichaelDavisOutdoorAdventures
      @MichaelDavisOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад

That would be interesting to see, I hear that a hull is only made to go so fast, and that it doesn't go much faster with two motors. But Big boats go after with 2 outboards. I will try that soon and see

If rudder mounted and you hit an underwater obstacle the rudder would just pop up. In the drive slot wouldn’t an obstacle cause damage?

If the rudder can only rotate 90 degrees or more, that would make a huge difference

To be honest I don't know, but it will work in any Hobie style hull, except for the Hobie 360 drive set up

Do you have to have a boat registration after putting electric motor on it
