Have had the app for months. It’s great BUT: 1. now that it’s being used by the state of CA as an early warning system they need to clarify in the app how early warning notification system works. Right now when you look for notifications in the app it’s set for global so you get quakes all over. This should be localized. 2. There should be a test run by the state to allow everyone to hear the sound and see the notification. 3. If not a test notification then there should be a function to hear in app what the notification will sound like or allow you to customize it. 4. Push notifications without a loud sound like other countries have will be ineffective. Overall they should learn from the city of LA’s app- it wasn’t tested so it failed during a 7.0 quake this summer and no one still is clear what kind of notification or sound you will get.
Jennifer Strauss PhD thanks Dr Strauss! So nice to hear feedback from you. Thanks! Not your purview but as you are involved in the convo I do wish the officials in the state would do the obvious and run a test of the notification system. Which we all know will have issues, god forbid it has issues during a major event. It boggles the mind this isn’t happening. If they announce ahead of time, have it say this is a test... It seems asinine not to do so. The fact that Mexico and Japan are able to get their S together as far as an early warning system far beyond what we have is really a shame. Thanks for your hard work.
Jennifer Strauss PhD also might not be possible but would also love notifications on quakes based on location (within 200 miles of your location or whatever Metric) down to 3.5 or 4. With all the swarming lately in The surrounding areas and smaller quakes would be nice. Instead a lot of us use the MTC quake alert app for that.
@@jenniferstraussphd3971 I think the alert should be better, like an alarm or bell sound followed by a voice with more urgency. The current voice alert is too calm and casual, and in an environment where other people are talking, I'm afraid I wouldn't notice the alert or realize what it is. Perhaps a female voice might stand out more.
Okay not to judge or anything, but why did they choose that sound for the earthquake early warning? It’s not attention grabbing enough. Japan’s phone alarm is loud and blaring. Mexico has sirens across the city and in building that are also loud and blaring. The alert should be loud like an AMBER alert. It’s shouldn’t sound like a notification you get from candy crush 😂. It should be an alert that can’t be accidentally silenced and loud enough to that even a deep sleeper can be quickly awakened by it.
What will the alert sound like? Will it be that guy saying "earthquake..." or a tradition alarm sound. If my phone is set to vibrate will it just vibrate or still push an audible alert?
@@jenniferstraussphd3971 Has Berkeley contacted apple/google to ask if the app can send out warnings that bypass silent mode? If not, is there a specific vibration pattern for the alerts? I fear I might not realize I'm getting an alert if one is sent out.
Jennifer Strauss PhD thank you. Just a heads up Apple does allow certain apps to bypass silent mode. Weather apps bypass silent mode to deliver severe weather alerts. They behave in the same way as Wireless Emergency Alerts.
The app worked! Extremely effective today during the Ojai quake, had a full 10 seconds warning, plenty of time to jump up and get out. Thank you!

Yes also how many seconds before
I think the alert is going to tell you there is a earthquake like a voice alert

My app worked on last Wednesday with the 4.1 in Corona, was in a bus (school trip) and I felt the shaking a little bit.

They added a tone to the alert sound

@@jenniferstraussphd3971 thanks! I just wanted to know what I'm listening for. Thank you and your entire team for making this possible!

One thing only ..i believe that the sensor should be triggered at earthquakes over 5.0
We had seen an 7.1 magnitude earthquake in California
Does the alert system depend on an internet connection? Do I need to be in a wi-fi zone for it to work?
I have this app! I did get alerted of a quake but didn’t feel it
This is the app that I have that I felt light shaking. It send me the message that it will shake. After it shake
App keeps freezing
This is just california or we can use in Washington state
This is the only app that works
Do you want fries with that shake?
Earthquake Shake forever?-
I more prefer the Japanese one
Me too
Yes thank
Garlock fault. Beware💀
I hate the voice - it needs to a chime then a voice
They added an alert tone now

Earthquake School
Ok
A lot of good it does if your not in school.
Douglas Norby it’s for everyone and has nothing to do with being in school. It’s an app that’s publicly available it’s just run by Berkeley.
