I enjoyed this series very much. It had challenges and set backs, but more over chronicled perseverance and can-do positivity by which slow and steady has ultimately won the race. All in all, it is a project to be proud of, and I thank you for sharing it all with us.
I myself have just watched near enough all your rust repair videos on the transit, I've just purchased a mk6 tranny same colour as yours, which needs ns sill and rear wheel arch doing, I must admit you've boosted my confidence on tackling the job! Thank you and hope the transit still lives to this day!
Thanks Joseph, Yes it does although its off the road as i'm going to renew the other side sill but all the work I done is still great and passed the last 2 MOT's. Good luck with yours. Cheers Martin
I've just watched all your vids on the transit repair in one evening. I would like to say a big thankyou for the effort you've made editing and uploading them all, for a diy job you have done very well, and you are right about welding, the more you do the better you get. I will now keep an eye out for any future vids you post. Here in New Zealand we don't salt our roads so rusty cars are fairly uncommon here these days, bugger lol, good luck and thanks again.
Hey, Thanks for watching bud and glad you enjoyed the vids. Check out my other vids as well if you have some spare time, there's quite a few lol. Cheers Martin
Years ago the MOT bloke would have slipped the fog light in and said nothing. Just spent all Christmas eve afternoon watchin' all 17 videos on transit, was good entertainment and knowledge thanks.
Got another mk 6 withmk 7 fronth not as russty as the first one but needs a little welding so you inspired me to get a mig welder do bit great vids you should b on the telly with a series beter than corrie n eastenders ha ha gd job m8
+spectra vectra You'll be fine. I couldn't weld to save my life but after following a few tutorials, I got the hang of it. I'm on the youtube telly, that'll do for me haha. Cheers Martin
my van went in for mot and failed same rust as your van was going to scrap it then found your vids on you tube brill mate my misses said you remind her of me so ordered the welder and clamps and edge crimper and going for it I watched all 17 vids in 2 days fantastic will let you know how I do cheers
Bit petty failing it on a fog light bulb, when i was an Mot tester many moons ago if i had a car-van with a fog light gone i just used to put an old bulb out of my tool box in it and pass it.To much hassle writing out a failure sheet. Job well done Martin,God Bless
retrorestore MOT in Northern Ireland is operated by DVLNI. Every test centre is exactly the same, top of the range testing machines. 1.5 million tests carried out per year, and you never get away with anything no matter how small. It's called MOT2 these days and there are lines of cars everyday waiting to be tested. I was turned down for the numbers on my plate being too big!!
I've been watching all these van vids from the start. I've just had some welding done on the sills of my recently acquired Citroen Xsara Picasso. Good to know the van is still going strong.
Hi mate would like to thank you for your videos. came from mot centre this morning needing to replace a coil spring and an early mot. Gutted when he told me the mk6 van not worth spending on due to rust. stuck without it not much hope of replacing it for a good few months but your have a go attitude inspiring me to get out the mig and angle grinder or made me feel a bit better anyway Thanks Mate
Hey pal just watched all your transit films and brill job, I've got a mk2 mondeo st24 in need of this treatment was going get rid but going to tackle this job my self thanks.
well done martin, I've just done all the Van videos.. all of them.. as I took mine for MOT today, failed on a number of areas.. 1500 quid they quoted me.. I've already started with the grinder lol.. keep up the good work ;) steve, Cambridge.
+camofilms Hey Steve, must have taken a while to watch all the vids lol. Mine probably would have been a similar price but I gained a new skill and saved the van as well for another few years. God luck with yours bud. Chrres Martin
indeed it is a handy skill. i don't do much of it these days, but mostly mower decks if i do. I have a divers type gas bottle on it which seems to last forever, and gives a higher pressure of the shielding gas which is good if welding outside when its a bit breezy. Good job anyway on the van. regards jon
Late comment as I've only just watched the transit vids! Just picked up a mk6 and luckily it doesn't need an MOT until next October!. So the plan (only after watching you will give me confidence) is, is to have a week off in August when it's dry and go through it like a dose of salts and find any areas myself and repair if necessary then seal the rest. Cheers buddy - really enjoyable watch!
Credit to you mate on a job well done. Seems a bit petty failing for a fog lamp especially as you say its a mechanic bringing the van in, but the welding was the main issue and you did a great job, thanks for taking the trouble to make the videos as a reference for anyone else tackling a similar job and keep em coming. And a merry Christmas to you and the family.
that chrome is really hard to sand and get paint to stick to ! I have a square body Chevorlet pick-up that I wanted painted bumpers and I have had the toughest time with it ! I even went down to 120 gritt sandpaper on my DA !
Nice work. Enjoyed watching this series of videos I've subscribed. I have bought a transit recently and now know what to look out for. Many thanks for the vids Ben
Thanks for the video series, just watched the whole lot! I have a 54 mwb mk6 so watched with interest. going to go over mine tomorrow , looking for all those rust spots, catch them early!!
Wow, that''s a lot of watching Leighton lol. Hope you enjoyed them and got something out of the vids. I saved the van from being scrapped and over £1,000 bill for someone else to weld it. Cheers Martin
Well done Martin! I hear what you're saying about the MOT tester, but quite honestly I'd rather they were strict, as I've bought vehicles with a ticket and how they got through I honestly don't know! Anyway - at least all your work has paid off! Regards Nick
Hi Martin would love to see some more transit vids m8 hows the van doing have you painted the sills and arches yet would love to see that thanks a lot jimmy.
Great martin look forward to it me and the father in law need to weld the sill on mine then I will be painting just watching the red mx5 Vid need for some tips keep up the great work m8.
Hi Martin, Thanks for the vids, I'm doing a LWB transit at the moment, not as bad as yours thankfully but in time?? :D I've got a flux core welder, it's not bad but the slag annoys me, lots o spitting n cleaning, I'm considering updating to a gas mig machine, you've done a fair bit o welding now, have a you any idea how long a gas bottle last you, ie:- 1 bottle per 4.5kg wire, 2 per 4.5kg wire, half the transit weld, 1/4, one small area of weld,?
To be honest, I want to know as well as mine had a faulty gas valve and eats bottles. I replaced the valve but my system is still leaking I think. I know other people with this set up and they say the bottles last for ages, months in fact so i've gotta sort mine out. Cheers Martin
thanks, I've just been reading on it, different reviews, some say just use a little, just a breaths worth, some say they run out after 45mins of weld, all the little welds added up that is, can't afford one right now but prob in time i'll end up getting one anyway.
Great news on the transit passing the mot Martin. Don't suppose you fancy the challenge the task of repairing the rear cross member do you lol. Nice work Martin. That is a bit darft over a fog bulb . It migt be a plan to to put one of the Hs4 SU carbs, on the mini as you can get a better , tune out of it. Cheers Pete.
Peter Froud I know what you mean. I have to sort the brakes on the mini now as there's no brakes at all today. Probably a seal has let go. Cheers Martin
good videos on transit repair but on the mot I am a tester and i can help explain why it failed your not aloud to fit bulbs on the test ramp (or any repair) while testing is underway exception is adjusting headlight level now what if he passed it and said look it needs a fog light and fitted one but it was a wiring issue (melted wires and clusters are common on mk6) or an earth problem etc MOT testing is his lively hood if your caught doing that its basically fraud and will get your mot license revoked same as performing repairs during a test eg fitting a bulb will also get it revoked vosa do walk in checks looking like everyday punters
Yes, I know that Robert. I've been around a bit and dealt with many MOT Testers myself over the years when I used to repair cars but I've known many mechanics who don't do MOT 's but take a vehicle to the same MOT Station so they know them and they pass the vehicle for the mechanic if it's something very small like a bulb, windscreen wiper ect knowing that it just saves time for the Mechanic as they know them well and knowing that the mechanic uses them all the time so there is a built up trust. I understand about the rules and regs but sometimes in these situations as I said in this case, It's a bit petty when they could have just passed it for the mechanic and told him to sort the bulb out to save him driving the 2 miles back to his shop. These sort of things go on all the time amognst people in the trade who know each other. I'm sure you know that anyway. Cheers Martin
To be fair, there is a 10 day free re-test. Just use the opportunity to go for LEDs if you're keeping a vehicle long term. I did. I keep original bulbs just in case. The signal bulbs are regular ones, I just need time to re-wire a few things as I don't want to use resistors.
Hi mate love all the videos on the m6, iv got the same one brilliant vans , went to farmers for mot last month and failed on windscreen washers and a bulb so took it home and sorted it then went back in 2 days later and failed on sills and steps that need welding , turns out the boy that done the mot 1st was a stand in as bob lol was on holiday , bob done the van 2nd time , so i asked bob how can it need welding after 2 days ? bob says its up to the tester pmsl . we are in 2016 and if jim says its ok but bob says no then its a no !! Any way van is back on the road thanks to your video mate helped me a lot cheers
Well done on all the Transit work Martin. An easy pass! Also, has the Mondy stopped with the missfire?Mine did it at 2k under load and was coil pack.Hope it's sorted.😃
Ideal Martin.im glad the van went through ok,although the mot bloke sounds like a complete jobs worth,I took my car to a different garage once because they were offering half price mots, big mistake mate they ripped it to shreds lol, never do that again. Ps the mini looks stunning mate, you've done a real nice job on it. Scott.
Scottbikerdude Thanks Scott, yes did seem a bit of a jobsworth as the mechanic goes there all the time but i'll not lose any sleep over it. Cheers Martin
Hi martin what can I say but you and yours lads have done well I will keep seeing your vidoes buy the way the Honda super dream bike as gone so I did not have it
great news about the, i think now mot's have gone computerized they all get a little happy from time to time and do failures for simple things. i can not remember for the life of me but i seem to remember my bro astra burg edition boot strip being plastic as im sure i used plastic primer on it before the polyurethane primer. if i am wrong and it is metal id use a epoxy primer straight over it and then the polyurethane primer over that before flatting back and putting on your top coat of paint.
Now summers here get on with it spray boot on aclam and sell .Do Jimmys carb door cards from a local good upholester. Cheaper than Mini spares or Mini sport. A sorted Mini is now worth £6000 all day.
Neil Jeffs We just pulled Jimmy's mini out and the master cylinder on the brakes has gone. It's up in the air at the moment so the mini is getting all the little jobs done now. Cheers Martin
congrats on van passing mot, didn't have any doubt after all your hard work, yea def think not tester was being picky no need for that he should have used bit of common sense, but again well done bet your chuffed to bits
Murdo Mackay I agree, it was picky, especially as it was a fellow known mechanic who deals with them all the time. Thanks for watching and your comment. Cheers Martin
Mot testers make you laugh, I've took cars that are pristine and got failed on minor things, then took definate failures which got passed...can't win...
I enjoyed this series very much. It had challenges and set backs, but more over chronicled perseverance and can-do positivity by which slow and steady has ultimately won the race. All in all, it is a project to be proud of, and I thank you for sharing it all with us.

Hi Martin, Thanks for the vids,
I'm doing a LWB transit at the moment, not as bad as yours thankfully but in time?? :D I've got a flux core welder, it's not bad but the slag annoys me, lots o spitting n cleaning, I'm considering updating to a gas mig machine, you've done a fair bit o welding now, have a you any idea how long a gas bottle last you, ie:- 1 bottle per 4.5kg wire, 2 per 4.5kg wire, half the transit weld, 1/4, one small area of weld,?

thanks, I've just been reading on it, different reviews, some say just use a little, just a breaths worth, some say they run out after 45mins of weld, all the little welds added up that is, can't afford one right now but prob in time i'll end up getting one anyway.
any idea how many bottles you went through doing the transit?
With the leak, 3 bottles.
Ah. 3 bottles, that ain't bad, they were the little 600g bottles?
Congrats on the pass and knowing your work is up to standard. Our local garage would of just put another bulb in and usually don't even charge for it.
spanermantim Yeah, I won't be getting any cars done there again. Common sense fail me thinks.

Great news on the transit passing the mot Martin.
Don't suppose you fancy the challenge the task of repairing the rear cross member do you lol.
Only meant to have passed its mot with no advisories two months ago! I went for a nosy about mine after watching your videos and found the cross member to have more holes than.. Well it bloody rotten lol that will teach me for being inquisitive hey!! Ne mind it's a Sunday project spread over the next 10 months.

Just found the culprit. It's the pressure reducing valve, the FAM7821. Another thing to sort.
Cheers
Martin
Well thats a result fella . Has the Mini
Discs on the front.
Peter Froud
Yes but not originally. I'm in two minds as to do away with that Fam valve and fit a servo unit.
Sounds like a plan , a tight fit , sure the old coopers had them .
Well done on the van thought it would have been easier to put a bulb in as opposed to doing the paperwork
well done mate
Just came across your vids and bravo fella very good job all round! Maybe I've missed it but did you do a vid on spraying the sills and wheel arch?
+Brendan B Not done that yet but I have other vehicle videos where I have sprayed cars.

good videos on transit repair
but on the mot I am a tester and i can help explain why it failed
your not aloud to fit bulbs on the test ramp (or any repair) while testing is underway exception is adjusting headlight level

MOT testing is his lively hood if your caught doing that its basically fraud and will get your mot license revoked same as performing repairs during a test eg fitting a bulb will also get it revoked vosa do walk in checks looking like everyday punters

great news about the, i think now mot's have gone computerized they all get a little happy from time to time and do failures for simple things. i can not remember for the life of me but i seem to remember my bro astra burg edition boot strip being plastic as im sure i used plastic primer on it before the polyurethane primer. if i am wrong and it is metal id use a epoxy primer straight over it and then the polyurethane primer over that before flatting back and putting on your top coat of paint.
Ea Composites This trim was plated and it's turned out fine now. Cheers

ahh right its one of them lol. im sure it must cost more to plate plastic than make a metal one in the first place

Murdo Mackay I agree, it was picky, especially as it was a fellow known mechanic who deals with them all the time.
Thanks for watching and your comment.

Mot testers make you laugh, I've took cars that are pristine and got failed on minor things, then took definate failures
which got passed...can't win...
Novaturbo2016 Yeah, I've done the same like the garage it went to last year. No advisories at all with all that rust.
