It doesn't matter what 'weight class' you're in. People will always want to hear the standards from any tenor, and he does this piece well without trying to sing it like anyone else. This is artistry, and that's why the people love him. Just listen to that crowd!
Also I really feel like it doesn't matter that much if the rep isn't "in your fach" when you're just singing with piano in recital setting. There's no orchestra to push over so who cares?
I was lucky enough to hear his debut as Rodolfo at Zurich Opera in early march this year. It was the only performance before all the big venues were ordered to close. When we finally sat there and he sang this, the extent of that moment and being there suddenly really hit me and I almost started crying. Didn't expect that! I was expecting to cry at the end of the opera, but this aria completely stole the show for me, such a powerful moment and beautiful voice and presence he had on stage.

And most famous of them was great B.Gigli so who can say he took Caruso's "style". The "slyle" as it is it's not a point at all. There is a tradition to perform some or another piece. You can follow it, and at the other hand you can try to bring something new. All in all it's just a matter of choise and creative taste. Please to hear some fresh version of the brilliant aria. Excellent job!

@@acitipo amigo es un pobre estupido que va interpretar primero Radames Otello y terminaría con Tristan y Lohgrin un tenor como el no puede ir mas allá de su rango vocal es una voz pequeña sin emisión potente si esta aria no la puede cubrir en lo mínimo y su Alfredo de la traviata es deficiente si quiere perdurar tendría que abarcar pocos papeles

Xuejie Xie JDF surely sings a couple of arias before performing them in a concert. He is very critical with himself, therefore he is always waiting till all is perfect enough.That is the right way enjoying people, JD is an acurate and courtesy artist, I am very fond of his golden Voice.
Really? This is firmly lyric. As he is ageing his voice is getting a little heavier. He doesn't sound as good singing the likes of Ah Mes Amis these days, but I think he sounds really good doing this. It isn't a spinto or verismo part, unlike some of the other Puccini and it certainly isn't Il Trovatore...

Technique is clear....but that's all I hear. No passion, no character, nothing for me to do but analyze vocal production. I felt like the whole aria was about him getting to the C (Which is starting to develop a very noticeable Wobble) I definitely would not want to sit through him singing a Pucinni opera - good verismo requires a certain size, *and* the ability to act. Even in his forays into lighter Verdi (Alfredo, the Duke) I find very uninspiring - especially when he plays opposite a soprano with a Verdi sound. ......just my opinion 😎😎😎

I think that tenors have to sound this way, and that dark and loud di forza's are rather baritons than tenors. Too many differences.

JDF ha dicho que la voz cambia, y que no siempre podrá cantar Rossini... y que debe probar e incursionar en otros compositores.

Definitely not for his voice type, but still, very impressive. Somewhat reminds me of MDM singing this piece.
