I did my first and second triathlon in a used surfing wetsuit I’d had for a while. You can also hire them from good surf shops for less than 20 pounds. I used a borrowed road bike and I wore a pair of trainers that lasted me around two years. I didn’t need a tri suit or a race belt. And I was stoked with my achievement. My fourth triathlon I had similar kit and got a top twenty in my age group. Triathlon doesn’t have to be expensive and elitist and is proper fun
I bought my tt bike this year after my first 70.3. I've been doing triathlon for 3 years now. My strategy was to build up distance and a better kit for comfort over a few years. I did my first sprint tri with my single speed, and it was absolutely awesome! 😊
Parkrun is great, if you lucky enough to have a local leisure centre and parkrun you can book a swim on a Saturday morning, ride to the parkrun and then run it. Great fun.
I rarely pay for triathlon/aquabike events. I volunteer as a marshall with a local event company and in return I get free entry. I've saved a lot of money for a little bit of my time
I often made bike-run or run-bike events during my commute in the summer. Ride to work, drop the bag, helmet, change shoes in the office, then I'm off to the run. Sometimes, if not too hot in the afternoon, I would run first, then ride home. Next summer I should include a swim leg too, there is a river close to my office.
First time you’ve looked warm in a video hehe takes one to know one. It’s brutal out there- well in Scotland anyway. My tip for saving money-try to stay the same weight so all the clothes you do have keep fitting you!
The make our own event - then we can picks the distance ourselves. It is not that difficult. There are good timing apps for a smartphone. Winner gets the bragging rights for the next year. For instance we have a local lake with an open airfield right beside it. So we swim in the lake, cycle on the airfield and run around the lake. We never get out on the open road.
Question, what happens if I don't stop running? I have a timed run coming up (PT test) and the max score is 1.5 miles in 8:55. I can run that fast (~10.1mph or ~5:57 mile), but I've never tried sustaining it for 9 minutes straight. So... what would happen if I did? (Asking mostly what would happen to my heart and lungs and not so much my legs)
Tri suits are actually not that expensive. Many starter tri suits are available at a reasonable price, so don't use a used one. The other advises are on point though.
Budget triathlon: 5 minute walk to sea from my house, swim, go home, get on bike, ride, get home, change to run gear, run. Perfect. This idea that you can only do a triathlon by entering a race is utter nonsense. Find somewhere near you to swim, even if it is a pool, and then ride and run as far as you like. You chose the day, you chose the time, you chose the weather, you chose the course, you chose the distance and you enjoy a nice day out and accomplish whatever distance triathlon suits you. Get a friend or 3 to do some or all of it with you. How about GTN promoting self curated triathlons for a change, please. They're just as valid as organised triathlons and infinitely cheaper and more accessible and would encourage more people into the sport.
Quite simple don't buy into all the crap triathlon youtube channels try to sell you with all the brand sponsoring of expensive bikes and stuff. And support your local triathlons instead of traveling all over the world. LOL
Well there are people who want to get nice expensive TT bikes or a great wetsuit. Also, many triathletes desire to participate in a very well organized long distance race in a touristic area. That is amazing . No everyone needs to save money . There is not wrong or right decision. Just personal choices. That is ok! This RUclips channels are business that provide free content . We as viewers decide what to consume or buy based on recommendations and personal needs and situation.
Tip for getting entry fees.
Do the local technical official course. I officiate at a race and the expenses pay for my next race entry.
I’ve got a few cold weather races next year but wetsuits can be quite expensive so I’m just going to borrow one from my friend

I once camped before a national race and it was great!
Nice topic! Who else enjoys watching the running dog in the background? :D

My favorite part about this video is all of the "critters" scurrying by - dogs, squirrels, etc.!

I came here for tips on doing tri on the cheap: Ended up starting a second career as a race director?!

Some races have cheap early bird entry fees

Brilliant. I do plenty of these in the Munich area.
Car sharing
1 or 2 pounds for race refund insurance? More like £30😂

And now I'm off because my p5x needs some maintenance at the local bikeshop.

Some people dont have triathlon races near them… or the races nearby are expensive.
