      I own & appreciate it. But I'm so wet behind the ears I almost couldn't say anything constructive. I've only played w/ & own that one & the 24-105 1:4 L lens. I guess I have my eyes set on some much wider & macro lenses that I feel a little bored w/ what I have.

    I bought this lens about 2 years ago, and I still own it. A lot of its reviews weren't great. What made me click buy on it was something someone said in a random forum post I found. That the lens had "a bad internet reputation." And that person was right. It's a good lens.

    Good video, thanks! As an alternative, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART lens (for Canon) gives you almost the exact focal length, is super sharp even wide open, has an extra few aperture blades, and is about $150 cheaper brand new. Just a fantastic lens!

    Great review. I maybe a bit late but with the release of the new Leica Q2, I have always wondered how much better will the Leica Q2's highly regarded 28mm 1.7 lens do vs the Canon. I would love someone to do a blind stills test on similar photos taken with these two lenses. (maybe also throw in the very good Sony 28mm f2 in the mix as well) and see if people can actually distinguish the difference.

    Have been considering Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM as my next buy, but I think you just changed my mind for this fixed. Have a Rebel T3i and Eos 5D MI to shoot with.

    • @KellanReck
      @KellanReck  6 лет назад +2

      The 24-105 is a great, versatile lens, but it's not great in low light. You'll get a lot more cinematic looking shots with the 28mm. Sure you don't get the variable focal length, but this is half the price.

    • @d1ehl.
      @d1ehl. 6 лет назад

      @@KellanReck I have the 24x105 L f4 & the 28mm that you're reviewing in this video. Do you think that's redundant or can they serve different purposes? I don't know which i like better?

    • @KellanReck
      @KellanReck  6 лет назад

      The 28 opens to f/1.8, so it's way better in low light than the 24-105.

    Nice video! I'm using the newer 24mm F2.8 pancake lens now - is it worth it to also get this 28mm or would it be too similar?

    • @yashwinning
      @yashwinning 5 лет назад

      Nope. The focal length plus aperture is different enough to notice the difference. With the 28mm 1.8 you're going to get much shallow depth of field, making it perfect for portraits and isolating subjects. You can't go wrong with the 28mm. Hell, you might even sell your 24mm after using it

    This lens became my favorite lens when I used it for years with my crop cameras. Now that I have full frame, I feel lost. It does not fit my style as well anymore on FF. This lens is so made for a crop body to give you that near 50mm equivalent.

    Hi Kellan - Great video ! Thank you :) Quick question - Do you think this is a better option than the 28mm IS USM f2.8 for use on my 7D mk1 ? Mixed use for video & stills. Thanks in advance if you have time to reply ! :)

    • @KellanReck
      @KellanReck  5 лет назад +3

      I tend to think the f/1.8 is great for low light. f/2.8 really isn't going to work nearly as well in lowlight. You might save some money, but the faster lens ends up meaning a lot in the long run.

  • @FeedScrn
    @FeedScrn 5 лет назад +3

    I just ordered one... it's in transit. I got it because I'm tired of lenses starting at f/2.8 on a crop... making it more like f/4.x. I'm also contemplating another underrated piece of equipment, the EOS 6D Mark II, which is FF. This lens should be good for both. Time for an upgrade...

    • @KellanReck
      @KellanReck  5 лет назад +2

      6D Mark II is a great purchase! All about that.

    • @planetdee3587
      @planetdee3587 5 лет назад

      I purchased this lens years ago because it was great for my 60D because it worked better than 50mm focal range wise for indoor shooting in low light. It quickly became my most used lens because it could be used for almost anything with a little leg work. I just bought the 6dii and now I do not know where this lens stands. It is a bit to wide for my general use but the nifty fifty (mk II) I own is obviously a cheaper lens and it feels strange to use that over this one for me. So on crop, you will love it is a "normal" walk around range is for you.

    Great review. For the sample footage was it just the lens or did you use nd filters? If so, what type of filter and or other settings. Do you think the sigma 16-35mm 1.8 aps-c on a full frame will yield similar or better results (at the same 35mm equivalent) considering it being much newer? I'm looking at this for my EOS-R so the sigma would be used in cropped mode where as this would be uncropped.

    Meanwhile we live in 2023. I want this 28 mm 1.8 as "normal equivalent" lens for my 90D. I want to use it for full and half body shots. I own the EF 28 mm 2.8, but I want a softer bokeh. It is not so super sharp as new lenses. But for portraits it can look well if not every skin issue is pictured. I hope the 1.8 can meet my expectations.

      It’s unfortunate there was never a good affordable fast “normal” lens for crop sensors. I got the 50mm 1.8 for 50 euros and that lens is amazing, but way too tight. Got the 28mm 1.8 yesterday for 120€ and hope it serves me well.

    A 28mm lens is NOT going to shoot as a 45mm lens, the only thing that happens with a fullframe lens on a smaller sensor camera that the picture is cropped. The comparison with the 2 photo's at 46 seconds of this bad vlog is not real. There is no more bokeh on a cropped sensor.
