You're in for some good times this year! Golden Sun TLA is one of those games for me, too! I 100%d the first game, but shortly after spending a stupid amount of time getting my save file updated via the password system, I got distracted and haven't circled back yet. I actually enjoyed playing Dark Dawn, but to say they kneecapped the series with that "ending" would be an understatement. I also really need to play Suikoden 1 & 2, probably the biggest gap in my PS1 RPG experience!
Awesome list. I played Xenogears for the first time and year or two ago and fell in love with it. The main games on I'm planning on crossing off my backlog this year are finally beating Rebirth, Fantasian, Lost Odyssey, Ys VIII, Digimon Story Hacker's Memory, Trails in the sky SC, and Xenosaga. I got a bunch more I want to complete but those are the ones I'm focusing on.
Hey, Xenogears is on my list, too! It's such a hugely influential game for me, even though I mostly just borrowed it from a friend as a kid. I was excited when I finally owned the game for myself a few years ago, but I used to have this really bad habit of dropping games because I felt I wasn't playing it "right" or my playthrough wasn't "good enough" which is super ridiculous, but is the reason I never finished the game. Grandia is another big one, also hugely influential and dropped repeatedly for similar reasons. There's also Final Fantasy IX (which I played a lot of, but sadly lost the save file), Parasite Eve (always in my periphery but hadn't played it yet) Dot Hack//Infection (a friend adores this series and I grew up watching //SIGN on Toonami) Tales of the Abyss, from the list of "I really should have played through this by now" Persona 3 FES: Actually played it when it was new, but I didn't really "get" it, so P4 ended up being the one that made me a fan. I know Reload exists, but I really want the PS2 experience Visions of Mana: Basically my most anticipated game of 2024, due to life reasons I couldn't get a copy til recently, but I'm super excited! Breath of Fire IV: The third game in the series was a formative game for me, and I love the few hours I've played of BoF IV Legend of Legaia: Despite only renting it as a kid, this game stuck with me for years. Another one I'm excited to finally see through to the end
Cool upload. Dude of all those games its Alundra that gets my vote. I absolutely love it. I was so proud to beat that game as a kid. I was about 11 and used to get stuck for so long I would start the entire game again just to feel I was making progress again lol. I eventually beat it, no guide no help. It was frickin euphoric. Graphically it has aged very well due to high quality 2D sprites and backgrounds, the music is lovely and the world is quite dark and unique! Its really quite a melancholic game. Its quite sad but all the more unique because of it. I hope you enjoy it.
Xenogears. I know you probably want to experience it vanilla but the Perfect Build Mod and HD Textures and portrait mods go a looong way. The vanilla is amazing but it can be even better
I was there for the Albert Odyssey live stream. I enjoyed being a part of it. I was always a fan of Working Designs and their quirky and irreverent translations. Some great WD titles are Alundra, Arc the Lad, Vay, Growlanser Generations. If you're planning on bringing back those live streams, I'm there. Btw, there's a new fan translation of Far East of Eden: Ziria for TG-16 that's done in the style of Working Designs. This might be the closest we're going to get to new WD
You and I both Shinky, I'll be playing Xenogears as my first JRPG of 2025. I've got the Perfect Works version set up and raring to go. I also need to tackle the original Final Fantasy VII 🤣
In 2024, I played Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Xillia 2, Pokemon Blue, Shield and Scarlet, Paper Mario TTYD remake. And replayed a lot of FE games. In 2025, I want to play more Tales, start Y's series and focus on Growlanser
Hello! As a coincidence, I also managed to get a SEGA Saturn on 2024, I'm starting my journey on rpgs from Saturn with Magic Knight Rayearth! And I totally feel you on the lenght of games, it's not something bad at all of course, but for example in only one playthrough I have more hours in Rebirth that people who managed to the platinum trophy, and I'm still far from the plat trophy lol Greetings!
I'm envious of people who can make and focus on a list. I tend to do things when I have the momentum for it so I could never focus on a list. Right now, I'm playing through a game I got weeks ago instead of other games I bought 2 years ago and haven't even tried. Because of this, my goals are simple: finish at least 5 games (I finished around 7 last year), and buy less games than however many I get rid off this year. That way, I feel like I accomplished something because I just know some unannounced re-release that I have never played will wreck my backlog. The only game I really wish to start and finish this year is Trails into Daybreak 1. I feel like the remake to Sky will come out even before I even begin that game 😂.
Oh I almost never finish my entire list, but it helps me when I can’t decide what I want to play next. I am currently playing daybreak and I love it so far. Really gotta push through since daybreak 2 is out next month
I’m about to finish the ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ trilogy for the first time. Next one will be ‘Chained Echoes‘ since I finally got my physical copy and after that I plan to play ‘Ys IX: Monstrum Nox’. After that not yet decided but probably something turn-based again. The backlog is still healthy, so enough to choose from 🎉
@ I was surprised how much I enjoyed my time with the ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ games, especially looking at the mostly negative opinions they received. There are definitely some things I’m not the biggest fan of but after all I found them certainly not as bad as many people claim. I liked the first one the most I would say and I’m glad I decided to see myself what’s it all about. It shows you always should build your own opinion and not just rely on what the majority is saying, whether it’s positive or negative. I definitely look forward to finally play ‘Chained Echoes’, curious if the hype about it is deserved 🙂
I just end up dropping it and I have no idea why. Makes no sense, like you said not only because of the style, but also because I love puzzles in my JRPGs
Albert Odyssey I finally played through last year. A good time, but man....those load times. Also, there's a glitch where the game will freeze while loading in a battle. It only happened once, but I lost about a half hour of progress.
@@ShinkyI've played it about 15 years ago but got stuck at some point after 55 hours of gameplay. Couldnt come back to grind or get items. So yesturday, I've deleted my old saves from my memory card and started a new game. I always loved the battle system but I admit that I would shorten wait times and skip animations for magics. ❤
I played through Albert Odyssey for the first time in 2024. I felt it was the worst JRPG I've played on the Saturn. One of the worst JRPGs I've played period, I think. Definitely the worst one I've played to completion. Also did Phantasy Star IV for the first time last year, and I rather enjoyed it. Currently playing through Thousand Year Door, then moving on to Legend of Legaia.
Yea Zelda games aren't rpgs unless you're talking about Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link, and Alundra isn't a rpg either i only played a bit, but i could tell that much lol.
Phantasy star 3 was impossible to play, worse than dragon quest and I'm the same as you, fr just not worth the time tbh the visuals and music are also just unbearable tbh
I still find original dragon quest super fun to play haha. I feel that though, we’ll see if I can play through it. Supposedly it’s less than 20 hours long, I’ve suffered with worse for longer so it doesn’t sound too bad
Great picks! You got this! Rooting for you!!! So glad you do the same as me!!!
You actually inspired me to keep this up! Starting from last year! (Though I don’t really keep up with it as much as I want to)
Hey Shinky, that gonna be a fun year! hope you will enjoy it :)
I’m sure I will! Lots of games to play
You're in for some good times this year!

Definitely some solid choices, especially sky SC

I played a bit of magic knight rayearth, I really like it. That 90s anime aesthetic is peak

Xenogears is a must play. I just beat again a few months ago. An all time great. Flawed masterpiece, but damn it…it’s beautiful.
Everyone is talking it up, I gotta play it
Xenogears 🎉
What a game with so many flaws but still a masterpiece
I can’t wait to play through it
I’m about to finish the ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ trilogy for the first time.

Alundra drips style!!
Same as you, I’ve started it a few times but for whatever reason I never complete it 😅
I just end up dropping it and I have no idea why. Makes no sense, like you said not only because of the style, but also because I love puzzles in my JRPGs
why hello to our distinguished Catuar Friend 🧡!
Why hello there my electrifying pal!
I've been using an emulator to run a game called mana khemia and radiata stories these have been pretty fun so far
I ADORE Radiata Stories, and Mana Khemia is super fun as well. I’m glad you’re enjoying them
Albert Odyssey I finally played through last year. A good time, but man....those load times. Also, there's a glitch where the game will freeze while loading in a battle. It only happened once, but I lost about a half hour of progress.
Oh the load times are atrocious. Even using an ODE it’s insane still
Ive started legend of legaia from scratch yesturday.
Are you enjoying it so far?

I beat Arc Rise Fantasia back in 2011, and, yeah, the voice acting was terrible 😂
I remember the game being very hard, so good luck 😅
Here’s hoping I don’t struggle ‘TOO MUCH’ but I’m always down for a challenging JRPG
@Shinky hahaha that's the spirit 💪🏻
Drop everything and play Xenogears. It is that good.
Maybe after I finish trails through daybreak. =)

Oooof, it can’t be as bad as games like Tales of Zestiria, Time and Eternity or Crossedge…those were awful experiences for me
@Shinky I can't really draw a comparison, as Destiny is the only Tales game I played for any length of time.
Yea Zelda games aren't rpgs unless you're talking about Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link, and Alundra isn't a rpg either i only played a bit, but i could tell that much lol.
is there a way to replace the mouse/ghost that is speaking in the video with someone who is audible? So quiet... soooo quiet
I’m a soft spoken person, my bad
