Takes me back to being a teen watching you on tiger direct
I still watch those videos. Theres something about them that takes me back lol.
Still remember "punch you in the face"? 😂😂
what is tiger direct? a TV show for Kids?
@@__Mr.White__ Lmao its the shop that logan used to do videos for back in the early 00's.
@@jackedup447 it's*
If you want to have the closest thing to SSD like performance around that time 10K RPM WD Raptors in RAID 0. They were ridiculously overbuild too, chances are there's couple of those still around.
I have one that's still working, let me just say...no where near SSD performance lol
@@jabaniz Modern SSD absolutely trash them and so did first gen SSDs when it came to random reads and writes, but they do come closer than anything else that was available at that time. Especially in RAID0. You gotta remember SSDs just straight up weren't a thing.
The main problem is latency not raw speed
2022 and I STILL use them in my main pc, RAID 0 3x300gb one of the best buys I ever done period
And vs my other sata 3 SSDs they provide 50-60mb/s better read and same loading times for games (much much faster than WD blacks I got even tho Raptors are only sata II)
Totally agree on the decision to go for a new PSU.
Yup, always the rule of thumb to not cheap out on a psu.
This was a really fun drive down memory lane, I remember watching your 8800GTX review on tiger direct and I had 2 8800GTS in sli just to run crysis on very high at 1920x1080. Managed to squeeze out enough performance to run that baby.
Ah good old BFG, "LIFETIME WARRANTY".
I actually bought one of their 9800GTX+ back in the day.
I had the 8800 GT in SLI, first multi card setup.......... so dope......
*Whispers* "Better than Windows 7."
You take that back! 😔
Oh man, Daemon Tools.. that brought back memories.
I built my first PC with this same exact case almost 20 years ago
I literally have that GPU on my desk right now. 👍🤘
Same. I still use it. ^^
YES around 2007 was when i bought my first all new gaming parts pc after years of dabbling around with old garage sale parts. my room was wall pappered with Maximum PC, GameInformer and other pc magazine pages😀I bought my Gigabyte motherboard at CompUSA it had a flame style north bridge heatsink very few had them since they ran hot. i replaced it. I got my XFX 9800 GTX+ at a local Ribbit Computers shop. I remember lots of your TigerDirect reviews. I got my Corsiar HX750W in 2009 and Samsung 1920x1200 monitor/TV from TIgerDirect. Still a good power supply with no coil wine yet after all these years. I sold the motherboard in box with everything on ebay a few years ago more than what i paid for it originally 🧐 then recently got a deal on a Gigabyte motherboard similar in the video. Maybe someday I'll revive my ultimate retro XP machine with a Xeon 771 mod with the same corsair ram 1GB sticks i still have or my 4x2GB G.Skill ram i have. Don't know why you would go IDE drives when you have the sata ports. I still have my WD 10,000RPM VelociRaptor drive with a window! i keep it propped in, but not plugged in my toaster dock so its not powered, but on display still works when i need it. I think it still has XP or 7 installed on it😀
i still use 2x500GB raptors in hard raid 0, then later added 2x1TB raptors in windows raid 0 for games booting with an Intel 600P mvme ssd
Literally watching you on a new tigerdirect video was the highlight of my weeks. Seriously I was so stoked when I found this channel! Been a fan forever and this video took me right down xp memberberry lane
Thanks for all the memories from Tiger Direct you helped me out immensely I’m building a retro PC in this exact case! Keep staying true to yourself. 👌🏼
I miss those good old days, where lan parties would be held regularly and everyone would sit in the distinct glow of various cold cathode lighting.
I started with a P90 (Intel 90 Mhz) and 2 MB Graphics card and 8 MB RAM, switch to an Athlon XP 2000 Mhz and a GeForce 4 with 256 MB RAM a couple of years later and used for few years...after that switched, to Athlon 64 3000 Mhz and an ATI 9550 and 756 MB RAM...this system sill exists in a storage :)..so long before your BFG 8800 GTX... I remember cutting with metal scissors the side panel and gluing an acrylic panel that hade made holes with a heated nail and attached a LED fan with a 3 colours combination (red, green and blue) so it had all three led lights turned on and kinda created a rainbow when fan was spinning...was the coolest PC in the hood
My first TG video was the how to install a graphics card tutorial. Twas a great era when PC gaming was a very specific niche that was growing rapidly! Love that this vid was recommended me for a great look back on an iconic gaming era.
Sad thing is the first computer I actually built was pre-xp, with the next computer I built coming into existence just before 8 was out. Filling the gaps in between were prebuilts, dell dimension 2400 with a celeron and an emachine with a dual core athlon 2. The system that replaced those rigs is still my daily driver with an i7 3770k :)
I've still got my Alienware case in black in storage. Such a classic behemoth of a case.
Literally bought a old am2+ bord because your old tirget direct episode still holds up great
dude watching you on tiger direct back in the days gave me the passion to build pc back in the days.. wow that was so long
IDE to Compact Flash - perfect for old skool systems.
Man, this takes me back. Beautiful.
I still have that exact case! Kept using it from new till early last year. She's rough after 20yrs of daily use.
I still have my blue Chieftec case, minus the window. Built my first custom PC in it with an Athlon XP processor.
Windows XP came out in October 2001, this case seems to have launched around November of 2001. So it's spot on.
Loved this video. I built an XP rig myself and its been so much fun. Believe it or not Half-Life 2 is DRM free, you can actually copy the HL2 contents from steam and run them on XP and it will work. The episodes can also be played but must be run through the command prompt with a specific parameter.
Good old “- game hl2” switch. Shame the original disc is useless.
Logan you maniac, I have a XFX 680i sli and that same case based on your rec back in the Tiger Direct days. It still runs, now with a QX6850 (i got on ebay). It is a windows 10 machine now with an SSD but in its heart it is still a xp machine. Had to disable the A drive in the bios because it complains at start up with out the floppy.
I will always love that Chengming/Antec case!!
Duo then quad with that bfg card, xfi fatality sound and big copper zalman cooler. Was awsome at the time.
This made me want to get my first gaming PC build running again. My Chieftec Dragon isn't quite in as good of shape as yours, but I spent a few hours cleaning it up last night. Unfortunately, it's not working because ~10 years ago my stepdad had broken it while trying to dust the inside of it. Luckily my mom kept it in case I ever wanted it back. After 3 years of sitting in my garage, it's fully cleaned and just waiting on replacement parts... which I ordered on eBay last night.
Bummer to hear about the software issues you encountered, but definitely not surprised. It would be cool if GoG added support for Windows XP since they sell games compatible with it, but I realize that's a lot of dev resources to dedicate to such a small base. I'd rather see them support Linux with their GoG Galaxy client first.
Perfect launch timing for my lunch break.
Damn this guy got me into pc's when I was a kid when he was at tiger direct. I use to look at all the hardware I couldn't afford. Now I'm literally putting together a high end retro build purely for the fun of it. Logans a GOAT
This build is still beautiful!!!!!
Classic times Logan remember you reviewing and always dreamed of owning an EVGA 880gtx back in the day. Champagne ideas with lemonade pockets haha. Ended up with the ATI sapphire 1650 pro at the time.
Oh man those cases I had every color back in the day wish I kept a few. I was a store manager for Tigerdirect back in the day.
My current PC has a Chieftec full-tower from 2004-2006 and seeing a similar case in this video gave out a weird but warm feeling. Great build, nevertheless
Like a bunch of others, I built my first PC after watching you on TD. I had one of those Ultra cases with the same front panel style but it had 120mm fans and a mobo tray so the OEM must have updated the design eventually. Had a BFG 8800GTS 512MB and green migraine man was awesome. Unfortunately it died right after BFG went out of business. Had a Q6600 and the EVGA 780i board, and I think I even had that same mem. It eventually had a 10k raptor in there too after a friend took a few from his job. Replaced the GPU with an HD6850 and used that until 2015.
Alienware pre-dell used this case design. I think many manufacturers copied the aesthetic because they used to be really respected.
I had the black version of the chieftec. Total metal monster.
I can remember my very first gaming PC that I built myself. I built it in early 2001 with a 1.0 GHz Pentium III CPU with 256 mb of pc133 ram, 32 mb GeForce 2 graphics card, creative sound blaster card, a 20 gb hard drive, floppy drive, CD-RW drive and DVD drive. For the operating system, I originally had Windows ME on it, but then later in the Fall of 2002, I upgraded it to Windows XP.
I'm using the Xeon X5470 myself, in a P35 board.
Getting a P45 board with DDR3 would make quite a difference, especially for games performance.
Because I did a full system upgrade, I used my last build for Windows XP which is well above spec. ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, Phenom II X6 1100T (all cores locked at 3.7GHz), 8GB DDR3 1333MHz 6-6-6-18, Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium, and an Nvidia GTX 285. As is, I can play FarCry without dipping too much below 150 FPS at 1600x1200. I did have two Radeon HD 6850s in Crossfire but that took too much power and I wanted the real PhysX. I do plan to get a newer model nvidia video card with Display Port. The 900 series is the last with Windows XP drivers but a 750 Ti will do.
I was just remembering, my last build when running Windows XP was an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe, Athlon 64 X2 (2GHz) 2GB of RAM, two GeForce 7950 GT in SLI and I think a SB Live! 5.1. Dual-booted Gentoo Linux as well.
I built a system for somebody in that case at some point. It was the silver version you showed. For the life of me I can't remember who it was anymore, but I remember I did like the case at the time.
Interesting channel. I wish I would have seen this channel sooner.
Really interesting trip down memory lane. Enjoy these more than the new tech vids
Had that exact case! So much nostalgia, big thumbs up for that. :)
Oh wow, I've been finishing a build for a friend on 775 right at the same time as you did, it seems! The idea was to get the most bang for buck. Here comes:
QX6700 $16.35
Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR $24.08
G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 Mhz 4x4gb = 16gb $51.99
Palit 660ti 2gb $35.46
Kingston SSD 120gb $14.18
Thermaltake CPU cooler (huge bastard) $12.41
Misc (case coolers, adapters) $8.62
Total: $163
Graphic card and ssd I had laying around (still included in the price), while rest of the parts I bought used. UD3LR I chose because of 16 gb ram max. Case, hdds, PSU and some misc cables not included as they were initially in the build. Also, if we subtract the used market price of removed old components, the upgrade price is down to $127. Pretty good, I believe :3
My first gaming pc case ever. Nostalgia
same except mine had a fan on the side
I used to have one of those Chieftec Dragon cases. Not the aluminum version. The steel version, and it was probably heavier than my car!
Aww man that takes me back. Sure Alienware used that case for a bit too (painted it green though). The cold cathodes was a great touch... I had those and rounded ribbon cables for all the drives - don’t need them anymore! If you could go all out get a SCSI RAID0 going on in there, 15k rpm drives. lol
damn you woke up my nostalgia :)
I'm loving these retro build videos.
DUDE, I HAVE THAT EXACT CASE IN MY GARAGE!!!
i had a flat gray version 2 with the acrylic side panel and it is decked out with old UV cold cathodes !!!
it was my first ever custom build back in 2004 and it was an old design back then lol
Got the same case in dark grey, but I only have 1 80mm fan at the back and I dont have the glass panel (wish I could find one though). Still using it today!
I have a BFG Gtx 275, e8400 dual core, running windows 7 64 bit still running strong. The good old days when manufactures were still figuring out what gamers wanted.
I'm still using the Antec version of this case in grey with a solid side panel. Came with a 2.6 ghz core 2 duo, gigabyte LGA 775 mobo, and basic ATI video card. The case was and still is absolutely pristine. I pulled it out of my closet recently and put in a spare x58 mobo/xeon 6 core x5670/9gb ddr3/660 ti/7200 rpm HDD. Can't get myself to sell it off to be honest. It was the first case I ever purchased when I got a job at 16 years old or so. Stopped using it cause I got one of those goofy NZXT Apollo cases 😂
This is awesome! About to build me a mid 2000 gaming pc for Vanilla WoW with a CRT monitor. Playing private servers. Going q9550 and a gtx 9800 or a gtx 260. Gonna try to run windows 10 with retro overlays. Just wanna play WoW with a banger system that I wish I had back then. I had an optiplex with integrated and core 2 duo back in 2005 . Worked for my brother and I back in the day. We cleared all the raids MC to most of Naxx!
That case is the same case my first computer came in. Some pentium 3 build I found on the side of the road. Came with a copy of Baulder's gate, too!
I still have my GTS 8800! I have kept all my gpu's since I got into building and I have the old MSI 250GTS and my MSI N9600GT as well. I have all the parts to my first gaming pc with it's 775 motherboard and it's core 2 quad!
I bought something for my first build from tiger direct. my OCZ vendetta 2 cpu cooler with the Thermaltake screw mount kit, my Asus p5q-em, and my corsair vx450. I think. Ncix, canadacomputers, and tiger direct all contributed to that build.
i made one of these pcs over covid lockdown in canada in march. white street glow car cathode neons, 2 8800gtx sli on an asus p5n-sli with a q6600, and just looked up your old tiger direct videos on the q6600 cpu and the gpus. full circle.
Me and a friend are trying to do this but having a hell of a time getting windows XP to install
i have a windows xp gaming pc setup, a little tip for an up to date web browser, mypal is working really well with winxp sp3, has frequent updates, supports addons like adblock, and is pretty stable, been using it for about a year now with little to no issues. i have a pair of gtx 8800 ultra's but there are newer cards that will perform better that still have xp drivers, "i know some guys build systems around a year or life cycle of an OS, but i build my systems with hardware that has support, im using an old radeon hd 6870, i have 2 of them but i haven't found a game that runs poor enough to force me to try and install the second one lol, the 6870 runs really well in xp and has a native driver on the amd site, im running the xeon x5460, i think it was around $15 on ebay, the motherboard is a gigabyte ep45c-ds3r, im using 8gb of ram, but im running xp 32bit, so only 4gb is getting used, if i want to dual boot a 64bit linux OS i can and be able to use all the ram, im also using an audigy 2zs, but i think a x-fi would be a better card for windows xp, it supports higher versions of EAX, i think the audigy is EAX 3, while the x-fi supports EAX 5, really happy with my experience with this build, plenty of power, but some games like gta san andreas will have issues with ati/amd cards with things like frame limiter disabled, even when forcing vsync in the driver the game has a weird bug, so i have to leave the limiter enabled to play it, im thinking about getting a gtx 580 and replacing the 6870, what do you guys think ?
i have that EXACT case for one of my server towers just with a solid black side panel instead of the glass
Running the same board with a Xeon E5472 3ghz as a backup right now. My z97 system crapped itself. Honestly it handles win10 fine and I've been able to play the entirely of the witcher 3 on medium/high. Waiting for Zen 3.
Back in 2007 I was tired of having an average computer so I saved up for a monster gaming PC, I wasn't going to cheap out this time and I only wanted the best. I was checking for video card reviews on RUclips and stumbled upon "Logan" from Tigerdirect who was reviewing the 8800 ultra and the 8800 ultra black pearl edition. I ended up getting an 8800 ultra GPU, Asus striker extreme motherboard, Core 2 Extreme QX6850 CPU, 12gb of 800Mhz ram and a coolermaster cosmos tower. And yeah it could run Crysis!
lol i remember the xp days. I used to put custom themes on xp and one of them was windows vista aero lolol
"Logan the never forgoten king"
My build at that time:
E6600@4ghz? stock voltage, stock cooler
XFX 650i Ultra
Corsair 8gb (4x2) XMS2 800mhz
XFX 8800 Ultra w/ Arctic Accellero Xtreme 8800 cooler
Thermaltake Suprano
Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU
I loved the neon tube like you have with a sound sensor but I can't get them any more
Wow I stumbled back on this channel after like a decade...
LOL i have this exact case ANTEC. black with plastic side panel. its huge, currently a test for my NAS. i bought new when 2500k was new. i still have the fold out feet too.
I had the antec version of that and it was identical.
I just built a high end 2008 Windows xp gaming rig about two months ago in an old chieftec TA-10WD full tower case. I had been pondering the idea of an ultimate XP machine for about 5 years before finally going through with it.
My specs are
Motherboard • Asus Striker II Extreme, nForce 790i Ultra SLI
CPU • Xeon X5470 @ 3.33ghz
Memory • 4gb OCZ Platinum DDR3 @ 2000mhz
GPU • EVGA 780Ti Superclocked reference card
Storage • 500gb 7200rpm WD Blue HD
Power Supply • 1200w fully modular Rosewill
I realize the 780Ti isn't really accurate to a 2008 era pc, but it is the last flagship Nvidia GPU that officially supports Windows XP.
I still need a sound card and I plan to install a Sound Blaster X-FI Platinum. I'm also currently researching and planning out how I will add in a soft-tube custom loop since there is still a lot of room left inside the case. Im very proud of it so far so whoever reads this please let me know your thoughts.
Still rocking a alienware area 51 from 2007 with original water cooling
God damn I'm old. I remember building an 8800gtx when I was in university in 08
I've been watching a bunch of build videos like this while working on a pretty badass xps 720 I got for free. Just thinking about 7, 8, 9 series Nvidia cards and how ancient the tech seems. Then I remembered I was a sophomore in college when the 8800gtx released...
Wow. I had that exact case in black.
Nice! Currently working on a retro XP build using an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (Toledo), using a modern Ryzen Wraith Max cooler, on an Elite Group NForce3-A939 purple motherboard, 2GB of Kingston Hyper-X DDR 400 in dual channel, a 256MB XFX 6600GT AGP card, and a Creative Audigy SB0090 PCI sound card, in an Antec NSK4100 case, with a SeaSonic SS-500ET PSU, Noctua fans & things.
(Primarily for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 Professional, as MS FS 2002 doesn't like my 8GB Q9650 Gigabyte EP35-DS3R 2GB EVGA 750 Ti SC Audigy SB0090 XP Pro 32-bit / 8.1 Pro 64-bit (with Classic Shell) build).
Chieftec Dragon!!! ❤️
I still have two of them. 😎
What I’m planning to do is buy a very modern case all of our Gen Z considers a “PC case” and then shove mostly components dating back to the early days of ATX, except the PSU of course, as they are like the most critical component of all and generally modern PSUs are built much solidly than back then, given how power supply technology has evolved over the years
That case is tight af
That Corsair PSU is giving me anxiety, most unreliable power supplies I have ever used. The last three I bought died in less than a day, now they make me very nervous.
I had a bequit PSU it lasted more than nearly 10 years.
Linus had the an Antec version of that cased but your case looks much better.
I was wondering why you were talking about XP on the stream last night and now I know.
Ah been waiting a while for this one heh, a pretty good combo of parts there, maybe go with a 9800 gtx+ instead for gpu, bit lower tdp at 141w while also overclocked versus the 8800 gtx & 8800 ultra.
Half-life 2 should not be tied too steam at all actually so you can just move it too a usb drive & move it into this pc fine.
Thought about it but that's more of a vista era part. The 8800 was at least a week or two before vista
Need advice. Have two potential mbs for an XP build. P5Q-Pro Turbo and P4P 800. These are from old PCs I still have around. Which mb would you recommend for an XP build? Have 9800 GTs and 550Ti and Radeon Sapphire HD 3850. Want to run older s/w and need acces to floppy drive.
Have the Antec Version and I Added\Modded a Light Wire into the Door.
my favorite case
I remember you from the FX 5200 days!
I used same case with my Pentium E2180 and 8600GTS build.
I had an nforce chooser for the graphics when I was in highschool and early college. I had a gig if ddr ram and I thought I was a gaming master because it was better than all my friends.
I was still using one of those cases (the Antec variant) up until about 10 months ago....yes it sounded like a jet engine next to you. Built a new system last year and it's complete minus the poor RTX3080 I have going with EVGA Stepup that I probably never will get lol
CRT monitor would definitely complement this build ❤
I went for a ATI x1950 PRO 512GDDR3 and I loved it, when i first played Oblivion with HDR enabled on my 19inch LG LCD my eyes pop out :)))))) .....
Are you Sure
Retro time!
Downside to me wanting an old Athlon system (Socket 462 preferably) is all the boards are farking rooted with capacitor issues from that era, I managed to get a Gigabyte Nforce2 board but the damn thing will only work if the os is preinstalled on the disk and if you put its newest firmware on it just crashes so I'm stuck with a laptop with xp on it lol.
A lot of this looks like the stuff I used to build my first custom rig back in 2011... Just a bit newer. Visually the design language hadn't really made the shift to GAMER yet.
The Xeon X54xx processors run hot. I prefer the E5450 at 3.0GHz that easily overclocks to 3.6GHz and the thermals stay in the mid-50's while gaming. Just a much easier chip to work with.
fx 5200 to 6150se to 7600gs to 8500gt to 8800gts 640mb to xfx 9800 gtx black edition thanks to tigertv to two gtx 285 2gb sli to 4 gtx 580 3gb sli to 6gb gtx 780 to gtx 1070 supposed to have an rtx 3080 but i don't that is my upgrade path
I'm not familiar with what Windows XP vulnerabilities are but I'd be apprehensive connecting the machine to the internet.
If you install Half-Life 2 on another machine running Win7+ and then copy the files over to an XP machine it will work. For whatever reason, it does not require Steam to run anymore.
