Duo Lingo Review: Learning Spanish For Almost A Year

- Ive been using Duo Lingo for about 10-11 months to learn Spanish and have learned a lot. Please subscribe :)
I spoke almost zero Spanish before Duo Lingo. I could only count to eight haha. Since using Duo Lingo I dated a girl who only speaks Spanish and another girl told she thought I'd lived in a Spanish country for a while because my spanish was so good.
I'm not fluent and I certainly don't understand a lot but I'm really happy with my progress based solely on an app.
Let me know if you have any questions :)
#duolingo #spanish
Ive been learning French on duolingo for 160 days and I can say for sure that by a year I can definitely become at least an advanced French speaker. By now I can manage simple conversations and watch French videos with French subtitles and understand most of the video. Duo’s haters that say it doesn’t work have probably used it for two months with 5 to 15 minutes per day. If you want to reach fluency you have to at least spend an hour per day on duolingo and try chatting to native speakers
That's awesome! I'm in Colombia right now and I can totally make it with my spanish thanks to Duo Lingo :)
u are so right espacially the part with learning outside of Duolingo is so important. Me personally i use Duolingo on a daily base of abt 1-2hrs and text with a guy i met in a Spanisch learning Discord server wich I also spend quite a bit time in each day, and he also like only writes with me in Spanish (even tho he can speak english) just to teach me some stuff. And to grow and train my vocabular i use Anki another 30mins each day
I learned english, french with duolingo. and now learning spanish. haters gonna hate cuz they ain't put in the work
That's awesome! How much time did you put in per day and how long would you say it took for you to become fluent?
@@BlazeGuitarLessons for french about 7 years. and english 5-6 years.
but i'm not even fluent at either french or english i'd say about 80% fluent. i don't think i can get further/it will take lots of time but I don't need that much language anyways.
Of course Duolingo works, but you won’t get fluent unless you actually go out and use it and listen to it. Duolingo+Exposure=Fluency
That’s how my Spanish teacher at school learned English I’m pretty sure. She lives in US and uses English everyday and to my knowledge all she’s done is Duolingo.
Been using Duolingo for about 4 months straight. Definitely helps build vocabulary and writing skills but I think it lacks with building listening comprehension skills. I practice Spanish with a friend that's 100% fluent and I maybe pick up like 10% of the things he says. Think the only way to become fluent is to imurse yourself with the language but Duolingo Definitely helps build a good foundation.
Yeah I don't think you can become fluent without some real immersion. We have to remember it's an app haha
This is great! I recently went to Mexico and had zero skills for communicating. I started Duolingo in Spanish and am quite blown away by how much I have learned. Looking forward to traveling South America in the future
I'm in Mexico right now! It's super helpful and I'm pretty fluent from it :)
This is great to see. I’m on day 12. I was hoping to see someone with good progress over time.
Yeah and it's only gotten better with time!
@@BlazeGuitarLessonsyou said you were about 20% fluent there how about now?
@@ingvarb8863 it depends on the subject matter but in general I'd say I'm more like 40%. I can totally get by and even have fairly in-depth conversations with people purely in Spanish. Are you using it for Spanish?
Update?
If you enjoy the path of the app for about an hour per day you'll surely be at least at a B1-B2 level as for Spanish. I progressed a lot with the app. Also made me enjoy Spanish more and wanted to learn more from different sources, like movies, chatting, reading, exercising by English-Spanish books, making my own sentences and texts only by practicing on a word in a dictionary
Thanks for this video. I'm a Puerto Rican who was born and raised in the U.S. I'm now trying to learn Spanish using Duolingo. I thought it was going great but i see all these hate videos about Duo on here. I'm happy to see i haven't wasted my time. Im only 4 months in but this makes me hopeful.
Stay with it and you'll get there. I'd also say to practice as much as you can with people whether that's in Spanish restaurants or friends or something
@@BlazeGuitarLessons thanks for taking the time out to give me some extra tips. I really appreciate it!
@@Jbbubanic5434 happy to!
Outstanding tutorial! Very inspiring! Good for you for taking on such a worthwhile challenge! Good luck in all of your Spanish conversations and friendships.
Thank you so much, Jan! It's been a lot of fun!
This motivates me to keep on using it. Thank you!
Glad to hear it!
We NEED a year update!
Thank you for the review, I just started Duo Lingo for Spanish. Hilarious story about telling your date you love her on the second date. I went on a date with a girl a from Mexico a few days ago. Her English is good but I told her i've been wanting to learn Spanish and she's been helping me. I'll be sure to follow up with English after I try to tell her something romantic in Spanish haha
That's a great way to practice! I'm down in Colombia right now and my Spanish is almost all from Duo Lingo. It's been a game-changer!
Chris, I'm also learning Spanish. You look familiar. You from Texas?
Thanks 4 sharing man.... you'll continue 2 get better n better because your desire n actual effort 👍..... I just started duolingo today but i already know a host words from previous study.....
Thanks! I've been studying for like 2 and a half years now. Not fluent but I'm getting there!
I watched your video when i first started. I didn’t understand your spanish. After 6 months now i fully understood lol
That's awesome! I'm so glad to hear that! Estas aprendiendo! Buena suerte!
Great job! I know this is a year old at this point but I just wanted to mention: Honestly, your pronunciation is not bad, the only word Id say that you’re pronouncing incorrectly is “ahora.” You are saying “ayora” which is a different word. “Ahora” should be pronounced “ah-oh-rah”. Putting the a and o together will give you a combined vowel sound that doesn’t include the y sound you’re creating. Hope that helps you or anyone else reading this and learning! Great job, this is encouraging!
Thanks! I'm fairly fluent now but still have a lot more to learn :)
😂 At least you were saying something nice to her! 😂 Gracias por la informacion! I’ll have to check out the app!
Hahahaha true! Good point. I love the app :)
Duo is insanely good. I'm so thankful. If you do 500xp per day you gonna make a huge step day by day!
Totally agree!
500xp Is like 3 hours lol
@@jesusc2me right I don’t have time for more than 100xp a day and that’s with bonuses from watching ads, how do they have time for 500 haha
@Trevor Karty false lol I get 500xp in maybe 40 minutes to an hour I dedicate a hour a day because I feel if I do only a lesson or 2 then it is not reqlly bruned into my brain but people learn different
@@TheWolflexure 500 xp in 40 minutes??? You must have something different in the app than I do because I can't get close to 500 in an hour.
Good efforts my friend!
Muchisimas gracias!
Yo paso casi todo el dia en Duolingo y ha pasado un mes. Ahora, puedo entender y hablar español con un poco de fluido.
Que genial! Te felicito!
Been using Duolingo for over a year for 30-45 minutes per day. Im great at reading and writing but i horrible at listening and speaking.
I heard a language teacher at a high school say nothing will be as good as being somewhere where people speak that language and I agree. I can usually talk with people in Spanish in other countries but some people are hard for me to understand
I use duolingo and other sources at the same time
It's kinda helpful tbh
Yeah I think you'll learn faster if you practice and learn in multiple ways
this is so cool, just started learning spanish on duolingo to, im gonna be on there everyday till my spanish is quite good and to stay consistent also im doing the step thing where your on a road to the simlest to more complex
I just passed a 1000 day streak! I'm not fluent but I can totally have conversations in Spanish and get by :)
@@BlazeGuitarLessons is duolingo all u used the steps?
@@Sadiq80k yes with the exception of listening to Latin music and watching Spanish soap operas haha
Your story of saying more than you intended reminded me of my own.
I learned some French growing up in Canada but hadn't practiced in many years. My wife and I were in Mexico and met a couple from France who spoke practically no English. Between their zero English, my crummy French - and the dialect differences between European French vs Canadian French, it was a trial, but I *thought* I was doing OK.
I don't remember what I said that prompted her to suddenly look shocked and say "You want F me?". Uh - NO. That's not what I thought I said. Suddenly my confidence in my French was hit pretty badly.
Way cool! Have you been learning any Spanish songs on guitar? I tried teaching myself Bailando but I'm not sure how good my Spanish was since I didn't know what at least half of the words meant so I was just trying my best to pronounce them correctly.
Awesome! Yeah I recently started learning a song called Por Primera Vez by Camilo on guitar. Check it out!
Lol it's safer to say I want you than I love you. What a crazy world we live in x)
Hahaha
On my second month on duolingo learning spanish. I feel like I have only learnt 2% of the language.
Edit: wow I actually understand 60% of what you said in the end.
Non-native speakers are always way easier to understand but it's great that you could understand! Practice listening consistently and you'll get it!
@@BlazeGuitarLessonsIm on my 95th day now. Im at the level thats learning: ir al, leemos, verano and that kind of words.... I have some spare time recently that why I started learning spanish, but I want to ask you.... how exactly do you manage your time and keeping yourselves motivated through busy days? Asking because I will start working 9-5 soon.
I'll bet my life he said Mucho Gusto with so much confidence 😂
More than you could ever know! Haha
@@BlazeGuitarLessons I just started 😆
I'm on a month now, but I don't think I heard one word you said in either language. 😮😍
Give it some time. I've been doing it consistently for 2.5 years now and I'm able to totally converse down here in Colombia!
@@BlazeGuitarLessonsHow much words do you know in Duolingo?
@@klevens5496 not sure of the number of words but I can survive with my Colombian girlfriend and her friends and family in Spanish
How’s your learning process going after 2 years with Duolingo? Schöne Grüße aus Deutschland 🇩🇪👋
I'm at about 3.5 years now and I'm pretty fluent. I've been to Latin America a lot and I can have conversations for hours in Spanish and understand almost everything
Are you still using duo
@@ashleythompson3916 yes and I still really like it :)
Really good Spanish 👍
Thank you so much!
“Te quiero” => We need a break. That’s a rough one my friend.
I have started learning German by Duolingo. It seems pretty useful to me.
I would like to ask you a question, since you have a big experience in Duolingo - after finishing all the lessons in the app to which level can I reach? Is it possible to become an intermediate(B1) speaker only with Duolingo? What do you think about that?
I'd say you definitely can but I haven't finished it yet. There's tons of content on it and I'm still learning a lot. I'm in Cartagena right now and nobody speaks English but I'm doing just fine
@@BlazeGuitarLessons thank you for the answer! I will keep using the app.🙏
A2 max, for B1 you need real speaking
Can you give us an update? 💪🏾🙌🏾
Si por supuesto que si! Estoy estudiando todos Los dias! I've been studying every day and have a streak of more than 365 days! My comprehension has improved a lot. I'm not fluent but my spanish is definitely getting better all the time :) let me know if you'd like another video about it :)
yo hablo espanol y estoy aprendienod dualingo
Y te gusta la aplication?
si
Hi, how have you progressed since this video? Thanks.
Really well! I'm not fluent but I've gone to Colombia and Mexico several times and I can do more than survive. Sometimes I struggle to understand but I can usually ask questions enough to figure out what people are trying to say. I've been told my Spanish is good by native speakers :)
I been using duo As well. But when I use it I also use google or other sites to make sure I’m pronouncing it right . Sometime I google si or sí or mi or yo . Mi and yo can be I . How and when should I use it as a sentence. Duo is good to learn lots of words but u also need more resource I guess
Yeah you won't become fluent from just using an app haha I do other things too and they help. Also, if you use Duo Lingo for 30 minutes a day instead of two minutes, it helps a lot too
Facts
Are you still using it?
Definitely and my spanish is totally improving :)
Can you watch any Spanish shows or movies and understand some of it without subtitles?
Oh yeah, totally. I won't understand everything but i can understand a ton :) I'm not fluent but I'm much more than survivable
@@BlazeGuitarLessonsthank you 😊
I would recommend the YT channel Explora Planet. Very good and understandable Spanish and you learn something about geography at the same time.
Yeah, dude, I understand completely. I like everything south of the border. And the best way to learn language is duolingo and a girl.
Right on!
Did you pay for duolingo premium? What are your thoughts on it?
Great question. I haven't paid for it but I've strongly considered it because you can get through so much more at a faster pace with it. That's my experience from the free trials I've done
@@BlazeGuitarLessons Thank you! I didn't realize they let you try it out for free from chests haha. It's been great and your video definitely motivated me a lot thank you. Another question is what unit are you on now?
very good. Im on day 209
Buen trabajo amigo! Disfruta!
steve krashen, steve kaufman, mr. salas, matt vs. japan
