I've got an American Bull dog. This is the third one that I have owned. They ALL have that stubborn streak! They are very food motivated though, so that helped a little. The thing I worked on the most is recall with my dogs. As hard as it was, I NEVER call them to me to punish them. If I need to discipline them, I go to where they are and get them. The "come" command has only good connotations for them with me...Food or love. That worked well. They eventually came to listen to ME like Marines, but my wife was a different story....

Your comment was very valuable to me. Thank you. I just got a 2 mo pitbull puppy 2 weeks ago. The most defiant, headstrong, look at you like, "TF you think? I'm standing right here. What are you going to do about it?" dog I've EVER owned. I'm 55 and have had German shepherds, Great Danes, Labradors, on down to Shih tzus, Basset hounds, beagles, shar-peis, dalmatians, and lhasa apsos. I've been able to train my new pitbull , Nala, to come, stop, sit, go back, etcetera. The only problem I have now is recall. Of course, she has no choice if I have her on the leash. When I say come, she'll come because she knows what I'm saying. If she's not on that leash though, she looks at you like you're stupid and I dare you to come get me.

I learned it does not stick, unless I stay consistent. She knows when that collar is off its ACTING out time.🤣Thanks for the reminder.

Sometimes we do what we know. I tell my dog once, then grab their arms and put em in a down. They don't like it, neither do I if I say something and get ignored. My dogs chugs are very suspicious and they are not good at it. But once they get to know how you work, things get better. Just need obedience.

    • @weedhigh2564
      @weedhigh2564 4 месяца назад +2

How about off leash? How does it work? I teach my dogs obedience without the leash, they understand the big difference when the leash is off or on and when its on all commands have wiggle room but offleash it all has to be instant or the leash comes back on. They dont really like beeing on the leash because they have loads of freedom right from the get go, now if they abuse it there are consequences but if you do it like me, with a mentor dog and you start early enough, these things are a breeze.

I don’t think you ever need a pronged collar. My Presa mix, alpha of his litter, was/is super hardheaded but now does everything I say/signal, walks without leash, everything. Proper treat training(you start with a treat, petting, and excitement every time. You quickly begin to reduce treats given until zero but always have one and be consistent with the petting and excitement) and good timely 2 finger poke to the ribs with your choice of word from when they’re a puppy. After months of consistency no more poke and the word has the same effect. Main thing is to never let them do something as a puppy because it’s cute or innocent that you don’t want them to do as a big ass dog. He doesn’t seem to be using it wrong but it can easily be misused and like he said when it’s removed they think freedom sometimes. I got mind control over mine.

It’s funny how you don’t have to tell him twice to bite something, probably because it’s rewarding for him to do what he naturally wants to do, and to tell him to lay down it’s like telling a kid to go to bed at noon. Lol

I got a 5 month old Pit and I decided to not do any physical discipline on her. She is Definitely spoiled bc I let her get away with a lot of stuff. Funny thing is, I know she understands my commands. She is just choosing to ignore me. 😄 (Just like he said).
In the past I would foolishly hit my dogs but now, after dealing with so many "dog dumb" @$$ human beings, I know that that is just abuse. If you shower your dog with affection and attention on the regular, then your tone of voice, your vibe and your depriving them of pets and attention is enough discipline. (Pushing the meal or snack time back a little bit can also work on stubborn dogs as long as you communicate what you're dissatisfied with right before you send them on their way without a bite - DON'T starve them)
The main reason I don't do physical discipline is bc I don't want to shake her confidence and teach her defeat. I also, don't want to betray her trust. Respect is good but trust is everything and certain moments can make a relationship irreparable.
    I Love my lil b.

This dog isn't an American pit bull terrier. it's an American bully, I don't know how he's bred, but I do know that he's not an APBT.
If you want to see purebred American pit bull terriers look at dogs that are registered as American pit bull terriers with the, ADBA, BFKC, SDR, and ICDR.
There are also dogs registered with the ADBA under the breed title Working pitbulldog.
Working Pitbulldogs aren't the same as American pit bull terriers.
A few American pit bull terrier bloodlines are Bolio, Redboy, Tombstone, Eli, Jeep, Jocko,
Old Family Red Nose - OFRN,
      Rascal, Mayday, Frisco,
      Turtle Buster, etc
A few working pitbulldog bloodlines are Camelot, Dagger, Watchdog, Chaos, Whopper, Chevy, etc
Make sure that you do a lot of research on the breeds that you are considering so that you will know exactly what it is that you're getting.
ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT GETTING A PUREBRED APBT.
Texas has always had a lot of good American pit bull terriers.
Talk to people who hunt hogs, and you will find some real deal American pit bull terriers.
      Good luck with your search.
