This was big purchase without my dad’s guidance he passed about 5 years ago. It’s such a serial feeling to walk out of the door and be like that’s it? When I started watching you & Akela years ago, I thought how wonderful van life & traveling the country would be. And yet in my heart I felt I would always want somewhere to come “home” to!! People don't seem to realize how not long ago, women weren't allowed to even purchase land, have a bank account, become educated, work, vote, etc. We were kept like property. Even our father's wealth wouldn't transfer to us, it had to go to the man we married. A lot of those men just married, took the money, and spent it - gambled it away, leaving the wife and mother bereft. At least that's what my POS g-grandfather did. Left us all in poverty by spending my g-grandmother's fortune. Sorry, tangent, but yeah, it means something, that mention.
When it comes to water you want to find the piece of land that has natural grasses the places that have more Sagebrush have less water. Look for the natural grasses even the deserts have water but it's not where the sagebrush is it's where the natural grasses are.
Congratulations Linnea! I recognize the excitement of this type of event, I bought my first property in 1989, a 118 acre old rocky farm near Cadott, WI. Over the 32 years that we owned it we planted over 100,000 trees, and grew our business and 3 kids there. Now, every time I drive by, I get a feeling of pride seeing the dense forest that we planted and nurtured. All the best to you as you create your bit of paradise on this land. Bob

That's not true. The equal credit act banned barring women from purchasing land, but by that logic men also weren't allowed to own land because there wasn't a law saying sellers weren't allowed to deny a purchase based on a buyer being a man. It basically never actually happened in practice.
I've owned land, and for you and Akela I am so very happy, for there is no better road to happiness than having your own piece of the American Dream and all it entails. God bless you all.

This all seems terrifying in the best of ways. I guesss you have already heart of Earthships but, I'll toss it here. Construction costs can be reduced by working with other people learing to build their own. Earthships are suited for your particular environment. They have built, rain catchment. The entire house collects rain water and stores it in cisterns that are beneath it. It's a very cool set up for the dessert. Best of luck.

I'll take the high mountain desert with the breathtaking views any day. My view is of the Selway Bitterroot wilderness. I'm about to rent out the house and hit the road in my Sprinter. The building up process definitely takes longer than what you think, LOL especially when you're older than dirt. Is fun to walk the property and have the dogs pick up a fresh shed left by the mule deer. I'm a well witch let me know if you need help

Having water is very important. But to start out with buy a holding tank and then have someone with a water truck come in and fill up the holding tanks.. you have alot of work ahead of you, but at some point it will just be the type of property land that u want.
Linnea, I'm not real sure where to start and I wish I could talk to y'all in person but... I just went through the same thing you are experiencing now except my land is in the Tennessee mountains. Anyway, I'm not sure of all the plans you have but I am very familiar with land development, conservation, and sustainable building. I am a structural engineer so it's kinda what I do. in NM, we used to look for ocotillo cactus and anthills...and work with a dowser, or our own rods (or both)
