@@daviddavid2890 I also saw it in the theaters when it was released, and your dad isn't lying. Star Wars (1977) prompted a huge number of theaters to upgrade their mono or sometimes stereo sound systems to the 4-channel "Dolby Stereo" system, which in turn prompted Dolby and others to work on an improved system - a "5.1" system called Dolby Surround (for the theaters) and Dolby Digital 5.1 for the home. Many theaters had upgraded to this system for Top Gun and other blockbusters, and that was a mind-blowing experience in the mid-80s. Of course, Dolby Atmos today takes that even farther, but most people's TVs in 1986 had a single mono speaker, so you could only get a sound experience like that in a good theater, and that made the surround-sound that much more impressive.
A detail I like, but no one seems to mention, is the significance of Wolfman calling Charlie, when he sees Maverick cleaning out his locker. Obviously Wolfman knew that Maverick and Charlie were seeing each other (despite them being on the DL), and kept it quiet. On top of Wolfman apparently keeping their secret, he cared enough to call her about Maverick quitting, before he'd even finished packing his stuff. Wolfman was the real wingman, all along. Hehe.
Yeah, it was so understated and left to the audience's interpretation which my mates and I concluded in our own collective head canon that Wolfman even kept it from Iceman too which really shows that character's character and posits the fascinating idea where Wolfman had a personal code outside the social circle pecking order that superseded even Top Gun.
"They broke the plane..." I don't think I've ever seen someone react that way to Goose's death...😢 "Occupational hazard..." I stand corrected. That's the most unique reaction I've seen.
They were already talking about a Meg Ryan movie: The Doors. Others are Innerspace, When Harry Met Sally, You've got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, City of Angels, French Kiss, Courage Under Fire, IQ, Prelude to a Kiss, The Presidio. She was basically omnipresent in the '80s and '90s.
1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men, women and the men and women working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation. 8. Onboard the ship the squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. "Mavrick's re-engaging sir" is for our benefit. The AO has no idea what the pilot is doing in the cockpit. 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. 13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (besides Navy recruitment). PS: I was waiting for Torie's response to Gooses death. 🤗
Front seater on F14 is the pilot and the rear seat is the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). The back seat handles the radar for tracking targets and countermeasures.
When musicians were invited to watch the movie and bid to write music, Kenny Loggins thought everyone would be going after the title track so he went for the volleyball scene and wrote Playing with the Boys. The guy who was picked to write the title track came up with Danger Zone and asked Kenny for help, which is why you hear his voice in Danger Zone.
I love Top Gun! I actually use to work on a ship like this when it was a museum. I wish I could be there with you ladies to talk you through all the military lingo, technology, and tactics. For example, that’s not a boat, it’s a ship (8:11). The difference is based on their size and purpose. A ship is typically defined as any vessel with a displacement of over 500 tons. The American Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier depicted in this film can weight anywhere from 97,000 to over 100,000 tons. Those ships are 1,092 feet (333 meters) long, equivalent to roughly three football fields. They can carry a maximum of 85 to 90 aircraft, but the number and type of aircraft vary depending on the mission requirements. They also have over 5,000 personnel onboard, but again, the exact number varies depending on the mission requirements and needs. These aircraft carriers are literally floating cities at sea. The plane flown by “Maverick” (Tom Cruise) and “Iceman” (Val Kilmer) is the F-14 Tomcat. It was a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather-capable, supersonic fighter aircraft that was in service with the United States Navy from 1974 to 2006. It was developed to counter the threat of long-range Soviet aircraft and missiles. It was also designed based on lessons from air combat experiences against Soviet-made MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. The F-14 Tomcat became the U.S. Navy’s primary air superiority fighter aircraft and fleet defense interceptor. They could also be utilized as escorts fighters and reconnaissance aircraft. In other words, it was built to establish American control of the air and sea by intercepting and destroying enemy aircraft. The F-14 Tomcat was the most effective fighter aircraft of its time due to its advanced design, versatility, and cutting-edge technology. Its variable-swept wings allowed it to excel in both high-speed and low-speed flight. It could reach speeds of Mach 2.34 (around 1,543 mph). It had one of the most powerful air-to-air radars of its time. It could track 24 targets simultaneously and engage as many as six enemy aircraft with long-range, radar guided AIM-54 Phoenix missiles that could hit targets at over 100 miles. Even though it was a large aircraft, the F-14 had a high degree of maneuverability due to its powerful engines and advanced design. For Abby, yes, the F-14 had a crew of two. While the pilot could focus on flying the aircraft, the radar intercept officer (RIO) sitting in the back seat operated the radar, communications, navigation, weapons, and targeting systems. They also help assist the pilot with target acquisition. This allows both crew members to focus more effectively on their duties, increasing both situational awareness and effectiveness. You’ll notice that they never specify who the enemy is in the film, and that’s for political reasons. However, It’s heavily implied that the enemy they’re fighting is the Soviet Union or a Soviet-allied state. Top Gun was made at the height of the Cold War in the mid-1980s when the Soviets were our primary enemy. They also keep referring to the enemy aircraft as MiGs, which refers to Mikoyan-Gurevich, a Russian aircraft and defense company that developed some of the most iconic fighter and interceptor aircraft for the Soviet Air Force then the Russian Air Force. MiGs were frequently encountered by American and allied forces during the Cold War. The makers of Top Gun used the F-5E Tiger II to portray the fictional MiG-28 fighter at the beginning and climax of the film. The F-5 was developed by the United States as supersonic lightweight fighters. The U.S. Navy used them as aggressor aircraft to train naval aviators in air-to-air combat, because the F-5’s agility and small size are very similar to Soviet aircraft. The instructors flying those planes would simulate the tactics and performance of Soviet fighters to teach naval aviators how to handle their potential adversaries. Did you ladies see the Back to the Future trilogy? Because the guy who appears at 4:35 is Principal Strickland from George and Marty McFly’s school. His real name is James Tolkan, and he plays Commander Tom “Stinger” Jaridan, commanding officer of the Carrier Air Group aboard the ship. When he appeared again at 9:26 I was seriously expecting one of you to say “That’s Strickland! Jesus, didn’t that guy ever have hair?” Or “Slackers!” (6:36) “I don’t want Goose to die” 🙄🙄🙄 Oh you poor innocent thing Abby. In the meantime, Cougar is in fear of losing his life. (11:19) That’s Michael Ironside ladies. You should remember him as Richter from Total Recall (1990) and Lieutenant Rasczak from Starship Troopers (1997). In this film he plays Lieutenant Commander Rick “Jester” Heatherly, one of Top Gun’s instructors. (41:52) If you don’t remember Abby, “Merlin” was the RIO in the backseat of “Cougar’s” plane at the beginning of the film. He’s been reassigned to replace Goose as Maverick’s RIO. You probably didn’t notice, but Lieutenant Sam “Merlin” Wells is played by academy award-winning actor Tim Robbins. You’ll see him again if you watch Bull Durham (1988) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994). (47:06) Fighter pilots can identify enemy aircraft in a dogfight through visual cues and radar identification. Pilots are trained extensively to recognize the unique shape and outline of different aircraft. Military aircraft also have distinct markings and color schemes that identify their nationality. Modern fighters also have advanced radar systems that display information about detected aircraft, including their distance, altitude, and sometimes their type. They also have something called IFF (Identification Friend of Foe), a system that allows them to transmit a unique code to other friendly aircraft that identify them as non-hostile. Different aircraft also have unique radar emissions that produce distinctive sounds that are picked up onboard the Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) that detect and identify potential threats from the air and ground for pilots. (48:41) That’s Hollywood and Wolfman. They were shot down at the start of the dogfight, but we see them here so that the audiences know they both survived. You ladies absolutely must see Top Gun: Maverick (2022)! That film is even better than the original, in my opinion. Thank you again for your reaction videos! ❤️❤️❤️
@@toy4871 You’re very welcome! Thank you for your reaction videos and giving me the opportunity to share. You ladies are the sweetest, funniest, and most lovable reactors. Take care! ☺️☺️❤️❤️😊😊
'Goose' is Anthony Edwards who played in another good Cold War movie just prior to this called "Gotcha". It's a good reminder of a time before the removal of the Berlin Wall.
I controlled airplanes when I was in the Navy. The plane Maverick flies is an F14. It has a two man crew. The guy in the front is the pilot. He flies the plane and engages weapons. The guy in the back is the radar intercept officer (RIO). He tells the pilot where the enemy airplanes are. That's the basics of their jobs
I see that run to the movies gathered together the top gun reactors for this movie. Toy, Abby, and Hannah you guys were great. It was really cool to see all three of you together for one review. 🎉
This movie was bigger than any other you've ever seen in your lifetime. The military loved it because it increased recruitment hugely. Just about every man in their 20's (me included) thought about it if not joining the military to become a pilot. Huge movie. A movie classic.
Always interesting to see who sides with Ice and who sides with Maverick. In reality, most aviators are control freaks like Ice. But some of the best are a little reckless like Mav... it takes both kinds.
That’s the cool thing with perspective in movies - this is from Maverick’s perspective, so Ice is somewhat of an antagonist. If Ice was the main character, Maverick would be the antagonist.
The movie Tom Cruise surprised me the most was "Interview with The Vampire" I was a fan of the Anne Rice novels that was ready to riot when I heard Cruise was going to play the Vampire Lestat, I was there's no way he can play Lestat!....Boy was I wrong, he is awesome in that movie and really owned that role. Give it a try after you watch Top Gun Maverick...cause you need to see that first.
The older guy that Charlie was with at the bar 'Perry', is played by Pete Pettigrew, an F-4 pilot in Vietnam and TOPGUN instructor with the callsign Viper that they borrowed for the movie. He worked as a consultant on the film as well.
'Viper' was Tom Skeritt, who also played the Captain in "Alien". I'd love to see the girls react to "Space Camp" which he is also in with a stacked young 80s cast.
I was a weapons control tech. on the F-4 C, D, & E in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive (1968). The same period, location & plane that Maverick's Dad was shot down in. After Tet, I was sent to S. Korea due to the hijacking of the USS Pueblo spy ship & crew by N. Korea. As depicted in the movie, REO's, i.e., the guy in the backseat would take their cameras with them. In Korea, they would get great pictures of N. Korean & Russian aircraft while flying over the "Demilitarized Zone". I remember 1 instance in Viet. when the "backseater" dropped his camera lens cover in flight. It disappeared under his ejection seat. When he returned, the crew chief tried to find it but couldn't which required it being written up in the aircraft's Log. The plane had to be taken out of service so that the ejection seat could be removed to locate the lens cap. It was common knowledge that the Lt. who dropped his lens cap got a major ass chewing!
Toy's face when Goose is mentioned before his exit is priceless. No worries ladies, Goose reincarnates as an ER doc and has a long successful career over 15 seasons of Television. You should watch Maverick and make a drinking game out of it, where you take a shot every time someone mentions "next gen" or "5th gen" aircraft. Good times.
The planes they fly are F-14, known as Tomcats. They are unusual in that they have swing wings, they are moveable so they are more or less straight out for low speed flight & swept back for high speed. If you ever watch the second film, you have to remember the name Penny Benjamin. The guy in charge of the aircraft carrier is credied as Stinger & played by James Tolkan who was Mr Strickland in Back To The Future. The scene in the elevator was shot after the film had wrapped, Tom & Kelly were preping for their next films which required her to have different coloured hair hence the cap, also Tom's hair is longer. The first kiss was an ad lib as Tom had forgotten his lines. In the end group you missed Tim Robbins (Shawshank Redemtion) in the background.
@@CoffeeMatt10I'd rather someone spoil it for them than watch them be absolutely oblivious like every reactor seems to be. It's frustrating that literally nobody catches it.
"I dont think he WOULD be able to fly one of these alone." The backseat guy is the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO, "reeyo") and its his job to track stuff on radar and keep the pilot appraised of enemy positions, and operate the radar tracking on radar guided weaponry. He's not a pilot. The designation has changed to Naval Flight Officer, a non-pilot position, as opposed to Naval Aviator, the pilot. A similar position is WSO (weapon systems officer, "wizzo"). The pilot's job is to fly the plane and press the trigger. Although every pilot would teasingly say the RIO/WSO/NFO's job is just to cheerlead.
Guitarist Steve Stevens who was the lead guitarist for the Top Gun anthem was amazing! I love the Top Gun soundtrack. It was a shame that The Righteous Brothers, 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' was not on the album. Loved your reactions to Top Gun.
I can't believe they haven't seen When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless in Seattle.... girls my age watched were obsessed with those movies as well as Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman... 😢 My favorite Meg Ryan movie is actually Courage Under Fire.
The CAG at the beginning wasnt the teacher in Starship Troopers... but he DID play the principle in Back To The Future. The guy that was in Starship Troopers and here is Michael Ironsides.
A story: brother's wedding reception, late 90s, glass tinkling replaced by 'sing a 'Love" song.' All of us ushers got up, did 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling.'
Oh really, Hannah? Because Val Kilmer also played Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's 1991 film "The Doors". Also with Meg Ryan. Another thing is that, people always miss that quick appearance by Tim Robbins(Andy Dufresne from Shawshank Redemption), as Merlin, in the first scene between Maverick and Cougar flying. Who was also in a romantic comedy movie with Meg Ryan called "I.Q." with Walter Matthau(Grumpy Old Men) as Albert Einstein. Also "Goose" was one of the stoner kids friends with Sean Penn's character "Spicolli" on Fast Times At Ridgemont High along with the guy that sells the heroin to John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, which also had a quick couple of scenes by a full head of hair young Nicholas Cage.
Goose (Edwards) was also one of the main nerds Gilbert with Robert Carradine in Revenge Of The Nerds. Edwards is also recognized from his long running stint on the show ER, a popular TV series.
One thing to keep in mind for the next one that most reactors miss and get confused over. The female lead in Top Gun 2 is NOT the same character as the lead in Top Gun 1. But she was mentioned several times.
Y'all have to watch Tombstone. Val Kilmer was born to play Doc Holiday. His performance will make you cry. Im a Navy brat, and yes.. in 1986-87 Navy recruiting went up by about 900%!
Producer's note: We recorded a Tombstone reaction a few weeks ago. It will be heading to our Patreon within the next month or two. It's going to be quite the video!
15:18 - The actual Viper and real-life OG Top Gun founder and instructor, "Perry" is played by, Rear Admiral Peter "Viper" Pettigrew, who served as a consultant for the film.
Definitely watch top gun maverick! I first time I saw top gun I was 7 (1990) and I have never been more excited to watch a movie in my life when I heard the next top gun movie was coming out. Then the pandemic happened. When it eventually made it to theaters I bought tickets immediately. My best friend (who is also a huge top gun fan) asked me to officiate at his wedding and to celebrate we went and watched it in theater. Sadly he passed away in 2022 and he was born the same year the original top gun came out (1986).
So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. It is wonderful that you have this movie and our reaction to bring up some pleasant memories of your time with him.
The back seat in an F-14 is the spot for the RIO Radar Intercept Officer (Goose or Merlin) who controlled the radar and defensive systems. The second seat has no flight controls.

MAVERICK!!! You absolutely need to see the sequel, it takes everything great about this and ramps it up! That background is life… a dog poster, an Iron Maiden poster 🤘🏻 and a Star Wars poster. Add 3 lovely ladies and a great movie and I dare say this video is perfection. 13:49 aaaand we have another one… he’s meant to be the most likeable character, so that when 35:17 happens, it hits so much harder. 21:45 this movie has something for everyone… the ladies get this scene, the fellas get the F-14 😍 29:35 the moral of this entire movie is Hollywood is NEVER OK. 1st day - “we got our butts kicked, 30 seconds”. This time around, he’s behind Jester, yet somehow loses. Then in the finale, he’s shot down in the opening exchange… man, I could graduate from Top Gun if those are the levels 😂 (those are not the levels). 48:23 I guess that’s so no one over 5 and a half feet tall tries to get in the seat 😂 it’ll be more cramped than a Ryanair flight 🤣 49:15 they have more than one set of dog tags, so don’t worry, Carole already has a set. 50:24 “this could be complicated… you got that job in Washington, and my job is here in San Diego”… can Maverick and Charlie make their long distance relationship work, or will their careers get in the way? Will Maverick succeed as a Top Gun Instructor? Will the Air Boss ever get to drink his coffee? And will Hollywood ever get good at being a fighter pilot? Find out in the next part - Top Gun: Maverick
One of my favorite films of all time, and it bring up so many memories. 1986. I was a junior in high school and Navy recruiters came to my school, showing video from this movie. I was sooooo ready to sign up, but my eyes weren't good enough to be a Naval aviator. So, I considered trying to be an Army helicopter pilot, but nothing came of that (mom talked me out of it because my brother was already in the Army and she didn't want BOTH of her sons dying). I love this film and it encouraged me to invest in flight simulator games, but I'm glad I never made the military a career.
"I feel the need. The need for speed." James Tolkan (Stinger) played Mr. Strickland the Principal in Back to the Futures I&II and Sheriff Strickland in III.
Maverick. And a good Meg Ryan movie and a personal favourite is "Courage Under Fire", if you like the kind of character she played in this you will love her in that. Also 3 isn't a crowd and the banter between you keeps things fun
This was made with the assistance and permission of the U S. Navy. All the fighter pilot scenes were achieved using rear projection, stunt pilots and miniatures. Tom Cruise preceded this with Risky Business and Legend. This was the highest grossing film of 1986 and directed by the late brother of director Ridley Scott. Val Kilmer preceded this with Top Secret! and Real Genius. The American fighter jets used in this are the F-14 "Tomcat". The lead instructors are played by Tom Skerritt and Michael Ironside. Other films they've appeared in include Alien, Total Recall, Major Payne, Tears of the Sun and Terminator Salvation
In 1986, a child could buy cigarettes 🚬. I was regularly sent to the gas station from 12 years old to buy my father smokes. They were only a quarter then. .25 cents
Merlin, in the back seat behind Maverick, is actor Tim Robbins, the main character in 'The Shawshank Redemption.' Also, the 'older guy' that Charlie is meeting in the bar at the beginning is a cameo by the real 'Viper,’ Pete Pettigrew.
Fun fact: Feedback from test audiences before wide release indicated a desire for more interaction between Maverick and Charlie. So the director shot the elevator scene to include in the movie. However, the actress was already working on another project and her hair didn't match. Hence the baseball cap.
Producer's note: we have reactions to Magnolia and Jerry Maguire on our Patreon. A couple of really awesome folks requested them through our Reactr page.
The B Plot going on within the A Plot of the ladies trifecta was a spectator sport in and of itself with this reaction video. Abby and Hannah wondering aloud throughout the watch, doing their own chose-your-own-adventure type guesses and possible scenarios the film's story might be headed or where potential character arcs will lead which is entertaining on its own, but the reaction within the reaction real storyline hiding in plain sight is that of Toy trying to keep it together every time her girls make their latest proclamation where they believe the movie is going and couldn't be more off or wrong and her face becoming more contorted with each passing moment attempting to stifle any 'tells' and retain her pa-pa-poker face is just sublime and pure comedy gold. Shout out, Toy keeping' it a spoiler and sucka-free zone, baby.
My folks took me to see this in the theater, when it first came out. I was between my freshman and sophmore years of high school, and totally obssessed with Navy aircraft. We lived in Virginia Beach, home to NAS Oceana, the Navy's Master Jet Base for the East Coast. I was constantly watching the planes, from my back yard. Dad worked at Oceana, so the day after we saw the movie, Dad woke me up before dawn. He drove me to the Base, and took me to the flight line. He sat me down on the back porch of the Air Operations building, where the control tower was. He handed me a couple of disposable cameras, and a wad of dollar bills for the snack and drink machines in the building. I spent the whole morning watching the planes, taking pictures, and talking to the pilots. I even picked up a few squadron patches. Easily the very best day of my pre-adult life!!
@@RuntotheMovies I could not have asked for a better father. He and Mom retired from the Navy in 1994. My brother, my sister and I all followed them into the Navy.
Now that you've done Top Gun you obviously have to do Top Gun Maverick next, but that one aside... I would HIGHLY recommend Vanilla Sky, Risky Business, and Interview with a Vampire. Those along with this one will give you a great understanding of his range, and will take you from Risky (one of his very first movies) to today (Maverick). Risky is a raunchy coming-of-age movie, Interview is a great vampire movie based on a great series of books from Anne Rice and also features Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and a very young Kirsten Dunst. Vanilla Sky is a mind-F movie, challenging what's real and what's not and also includes a huge cast including Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell, and Jason Lee.
This movie was a major inspiration for me to enlist along with all my grandfather's WWII Navy stories. I didn't find out until I was actually in basic training that a good portion of the film is Hollywood nonsense. It's still a fun watch and one of my favorites along with Iron Eagle
Almost all of the flying in this movie was done with REAL aircraft with the extensive support of the US Navy. They even fired a live missile for the movie people to film. In addition to the F-14 Tomcats that Maverick et al are flying, the instructor aircraft are A-4 Skyhawks and the "Soviet MiG-28s" (a made-up-designation: real MiGs have odd numbers) are played by F-5E & F-5F Tiger IIs, repainted just for the movie. The only special effects shots are the gunfire (pyrotechnics fired past a camera then composited in) and aircraft exploding or getting damaged. The latter was done by the very high tech method of setting fire to large plastic models, throwing them off the top of a tall scaffolding and filming them upwards against the blue sky. Remember, this is 1986: CGI hasn't been invented yet. The accident that killed Goose was realistic, and a real problem for F-14s until they got new engines. The original TF-30 engines were very sensitive to disturbed airflow going into the intakes, and would "flame out" (stop working) relatively easily. Because the F-14's engines were very far apart, having one engine flame out unexpectedly could throw the aircraft into a "flat spin" (spinning horizontally like a plate) which was very difficult to get out of. Maverick's plane flew through the "jetwash" (jet exhaust) from the other F-14, and that sudden burst of hot, oxygen-poor air going into their intakes was enough to flame one of their engines out and put them into a flat spin. When aircrew eject from an aircraft, the canopy is jettisoned first, and the system depends on it being pulled backwards away from the cockpit by normal airflow. When Maverick and Goose ejected the airflow was anything but normal due to the flat spin, which meant the canopy "hung around" over the cockpit. Maverick missed it but Goose hit it and the impact broke his neck. In most air forces and navies pliots do indeed get their name on an aircraft, but there's no guarantee they get to fly "their" particular plane every day: it depends which aircraft are serviceable. Jet fighters need a LOT of maintenance: a squadron is doing really well if 90% of their aircraft are available on any given day. With some aircraft it's been under 50%...

I saw this one and the modern one the modern one was pretty good too
@@daviddavid2890 I also saw it in the theaters when it was released, and your dad isn't lying.
The Captain guy on the carrier was the Principal in the Back to the future movies
Actor's name is James Tolkan
My dad was a Navy recruiter when this came out. Many many people joined because of this movie.
The military agreed to give them access and supply the planes and aerial footage because they realized this would be a great recruitment tool.
lol and most ended up nowhere near a jet
@@superthrustjon lol, right
Probably wasn't a single bulkhead in the navy that went unpainted for the next four years.
Pretty sure recruitment goals were met early that year and for several yearsafter that.
Abby's innocence on these cool old movies is fascinating. 😅
"They broke the plane..."
I don't think I've ever seen someone react that way to Goose's death...😢
"Occupational hazard..."
I stand corrected. That's the most unique reaction I've seen.
"Unique" is a great description. It's why this is my favorite reaction channel.
Thr Last Samurai and Collateral are some of Tom Cruise best work
Word. Last Samurai might be his best. There is so much going on in that movie. Fantastic story.
Yes! Collateral is great, and is a little outside the box for him. Also, it stars Jaimie Fox too, who always does great work.
I really like Tom in Interview with a Vampire and Collateral
I really like Tom in Interview with a Vampire and Collateral
Toy is so great. It is actually more fun to watch her when she's seen the movie before. The anticipatory side-eye and the pillow hugs are so good.
Goose is Anthony Edwards who is Dr Green in ER and also Gilbert in Revenge Of The Nerds.
In "Joe VS the volcano" she plays three roles.
Going to the theater was so much fun back then
Now you just have to watch Hot Shots, not just Maverick.
I was a radar tech in the Navy. The big square antenna on the mast of the carriers was my radar. AN/SPS 48E.
My dad was an aircraft signal man in the Navy
Walleye?
I was ammo. Loaded a lot of F-18's.
I'm a Mission Crew Commander Air Battle Manager on AWACS. Big Radar.
Tom Cruise was 23 when he filmed this. Time flies.
Shout out
4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
Thanks so much for taking the time to share some of your Navy experience and that of your buddy. We'll add "Flight of the Intruder" to our list. 😸
Flight of the Intruder is wayyy more accurate than Top Gun, and one of my favorite books too.
@@georgeandritsakis1482 Agree
Merlin is tim Robbins from the movie SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
He was also in another movie with Tom Cruise years later in War Of The Worlds. He played the crazy guy that let them stay in his attic.
"I had a pet lizard named Jim Morrison."
That's so Toy...
"He died. ".... WTF ??
Front seater on F14 is the pilot and the rear seat is the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). The back seat handles the radar for tracking targets and countermeasures.
Fun fact: that green dye is also shark repellant
Maverick!!! The lady on the left knew what was going to happen. I thank you madam
Ice Man’s co pilot is Rick Rossivich. Ginger’s boyfriend Matt from The Terminator.
Jesus, didn’t that guy ever have hair?” Or “Slackers!”
(6:36) “I don’t want Goose to die” 🙄🙄🙄 Oh you poor innocent thing Abby.

'Goose' is Anthony Edwards who played in another good Cold War movie just prior to this called "Gotcha". It's a good reminder of a time before the removal of the Berlin Wall.
Been waiting for someone to to that. One of my favorites.
He was in Revenge of the Nerds.
2:27 girl on the right is like ”Bit** I can read!!”😂
I controlled airplanes when I was in the Navy. The plane Maverick flies is an F14. It has a two man crew. The guy in the front is the pilot. He flies the plane and engages weapons. The guy in the back is the radar intercept officer (RIO). He tells the pilot where the enemy airplanes are. That's the basics of their jobs
I see that run to the movies gathered together the top gun reactors for this movie.
Toy, Abby, and Hannah you guys were great. It was really cool to see all three of you together for one review. 🎉
Thanks so much for watching with us!
In the F-14 Tomcat there was a pilot (Mav) and a RADAR Intercept Officer RIO (Goose)
Val Kilmer in "Thunderheart" great movie filmed(supposedly) on an Indian reservation. Graham Greene co-stars.
You can possibly recognize Maverick's replacement back-seater in the training in Die Hard, as one of the principal bad guys.
He was also in "Matlock" and "Walker, Texas Ranger." He was definitely the most quotable as Theo, in "Die Hard."
@@Warlocke000”and the quarterback is toast”
Two of my favorites of his early roles are MASH and Harold & Maude.
45:31 Merlin, Maverick's reel, is played by Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption. He also had a bit part in the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds reboot.
Saw this movie at the theatre 14 times in 10 days, still one of the best movies I have watched. Great reaction too.
Wow! That must have been a lot of popcorn! We're glad that we helped you relive great memories.
What, no one's mentioned Tim Robbins as Merlin yet?
Yeah, this and Shawshank!
Good times.
Meg Ryan. This was her breakout movie, but she also played opposite Tom Hanks in You Got Mail. 😮
“Legend” is an early Cruise film. One of my favorites.
You get to meet the Admirals daughter in TopGun Maverick
Cool spoiler dude 🤦🏻♂️
@@CoffeeMatt10I'd rather someone spoil it for them than watch them be absolutely oblivious like every reactor seems to be. It's frustrating that literally nobody catches it.
@@clevelandcbi AGREED! Everybody thinks "Penny" is somehow "Charlie."
@@bessarion1771 Especially if you see Charlie (Kelly McGillis) today. There is ZERO resemblance.
@@clevelandcbi Exactly.

Middle girl , hi this was fun to watch with ya ✌️☺️
Fun to watch with you too!!
Don’t forget the name Penny Benjamin ladies, the Admiral’s daughter we heard Maverick did a high speed flyover!
Meg: "Tell us about the time you went Ballistic with Penny Benjamin"
"I dont think he WOULD be able to fly one of these alone."
The backseat guy is the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO, "reeyo") and its his job to track stuff on radar and keep the pilot appraised of enemy positions, and operate the radar tracking on radar guided weaponry.
You should definitely watch Knight and Day 2010.
Producer's note: It's on our list for the near future. :)
Knight & Day is so good! Very witty and entertaining
Fun detail that older guy was a top gun instructor and advisor to the film that was with "Charlie" in the bar for his cameo.

“Its beautiful, man!!”
Movie quote from Tom Mapother IV.
I can't believe they haven't seen When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless in Seattle.... girls my age watched were obsessed with those movies as well as Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman... 😢
My favorite Meg Ryan movie is actually Courage Under Fire.
I thought the same thing. I guess younger generation girls don't watch the same chick flicks. LOL!
The CAG at the beginning wasnt the teacher in Starship Troopers... but he DID play the principle in Back To The Future.
The guy that was in Starship Troopers and here is Michael Ironsides.
No, but Michael Ironside was.
33:35 fucking LOOOOOOOOOOOOL at Toy’s expression while Abby’s going on about what Maverick has to lose 😂😂
37:49 No. The US Military has specially-trained personnel for notifying next of kin in the event of a service member’s death.
"Is Maverick Tom Cruise?" Nah, Tom Cruise is Maverick! 😂
15:18 - The actual Viper and real-life OG Top Gun founder and instructor, "Perry" is played by, Rear Admiral Peter "Viper" Pettigrew, who served as a consultant for the film.
It's interesting that you said the commander reminded you of a teacher from a movie. He played the principal in Back to the Future as well.
If you guys have time, Iron Eagle is just as fun. Definitely worth a react! 😁
The best recruitment commercial the military ever had. This ain't "Full Metal Jacket" y'all.

Maverick!!!
Contrary to most of us that had to wait 40+ years for the sequel, you should watch it while this one is fresh in your minds.
The back seat in an F-14 is the spot for the RIO Radar Intercept Officer (Goose or Merlin) who controlled the radar and defensive systems. The second seat has no flight controls.
Risky Business is the movie that brought Tom Cruise into the spotlight. That would be a great movie for y’all to watch

21:45 this movie has something for everyone… the ladies get this scene, the fellas get the F-14 😍
29:35 the moral of this entire movie is Hollywood is NEVER OK. 1st day - “we got our butts kicked, 30 seconds”. This time around, he’s behind Jester, yet somehow loses. Then in the finale, he’s shot down in the opening exchange… man, I could graduate from Top Gun if those are the levels 😂 (those are not the levels).

Tom Cruise did 'Interview with a Vampire.' Awesome movie.
Cocktail with Tom Cruise for sure is a must watch
This movie is considered a highlight of the 80s!
Hey, this film is THE favorite movie that sailors like to watch while out on duty.
For another Tom Cruise 'The Last Samurai' is great and for a fun plane fighting movie check out 'Flyboys' with James Franco
Rain Man, Vanilla Sky, Born on the 4th of July, Magnolia, Risky Business, and Jerry Maquire.

Who not felt the same as Toy at 6:38?! I remember Coke using the scene at 7:10 to do ads. This movie is a classic. I love this and Top Gun: Mavewrick.
Hannah just did not look like she was vibing this movie AT ALL, lol.....
none of them did.... looked like it was just background noise.
@underdawgboost 😂😂😂😂😂 nice try diddy
More Abby and Cruise that’s the dream 😂
Thank you so much for sharing this memory! It sounds like your dad was really awesome.
@@RuntotheMovies I could not have asked for a better father. He and Mom retired from the Navy in 1994. My brother, my sister and I all followed them into the Navy.
Maverick soon hopefully
Cocktail, The Color of Money, The Firm, A Few Good Men, all great movies
Thanks so much for these tidbits!
