This song is known as "Doctorin' the TARDIS" by the KLF going by the name of the Timelords. It is a remix/cover (with added "Doctor Who" related samples) of "Rock and Roll part 2" written and performed by Gary Glitter back in the seventies. This song never appeared in"Doctor Who" but was appropriated for a documentary on the making of the 25th Anniversary story, "Silver Nemesis" back in 1988.
For the sake of completeness... Delia Derbyshire - Original "Dr. Who theme": 1963 Gary Glitter - "Rock and Roll, Parts 1 and 2" (Hey Song): 1972 The Timelords (a/k/a KLF) - "Doctorin' the Tardis" (samples both songs): 1988.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS, mostly not mentioned in the 132 comments here ... Particularly worth noting is the fact that the band who recorded THIS version BURNED ONE MILLION POUNDS STERLING, in £50 notes, oFILMING IT AS A PUBLICITY STUNT for an 80's TV show, then TRIED to claim it back the next day from the bank who would only give them £100,000 back, as that was all they could verify from the ashes... But re the song itself... We should REALLY be crediting the very talented songwriter/producer, MIKE LEANDER, (who also produced just one of the Beatles songs - "SHE'S LEAVING HOME", I seem to recall - that brilliant string arrangement) - He, Mike Leander, is the guy who actually made the original Gary Glitter "ROCK N ROLL PART 2" backing track that Gary Glitter simply "sang" over... (As teenagers, we loved Gary Glitter in the UK until he got sent to jail - the less said) ROCK N ROLL Part 2 was the actual hit, a sleeper, taking a YEAR to climb to Number one in the UK in the early 70's ... He recorded it using TAPE LOOPS around door handles etc, a few years before The Bee Gee's were wrongly credited as being the first to use tape loops on a commercial hit (Jive Talkin' or Stayin alive or the like - I forget - also done with tape loops stretching from one room to another - But certainly not the first - not to mention some seriously naff "avante garde'", arty tape loop stuff done much earlier by others, but not made into hits) .. ANYWAY - Back to the wonderful Mike Leander - The guy who also wrote the cheesy but mega UK hits by THE WOMBLES (OF WIMBLEDON) ... "REMEMBER YOU'RE A WOMBLE!" wE NEVER DID GET TO FIND OUT WHO WAS INSIDE THOSE WOMBLE COSTIUMES ON totp EVERY WEEK (Only quite OLD UK folks will know what I'm on about! i'M 60 so was a teenager when all this was going on.) TO GET THAT DISTINCTIVE GLITTER BAND GUITAR SOUND he detuned all 6 strings of an electric guitar to one note and played through a crappy amp he found in a cupboard in the studio ... I THINK he onl;y made the track because there was a cancelled recording session, so he took advantage of the downtime to experiment with beats, unison guitar sounds and tape loops - and out came the so called "HEY SONG" or ROCK N ROLL PART 2 to us old Brits.... katy perry's hit "I KISSED A GIRL" REALLY mimmicks those same raw ingredients - the BEAT and UNISON guitar riffs ... Put it this way, if you play ROCK N ROLL PART 2 then stop before the tune kicks in, younger people who don;t know the original ask why you started and stopped "I kissed a girl" - Well, they did a few years ago anyway, when it was still a current hit! It's quite dated now of course. I love both songs though. THE SHOCKING thing about The KLF VERSION (the Doctor Who hit incorporating one of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman's creations, BLOCKBUSTER, by THE SWEET - which, interestingly (to a nerd like me!) they didn;t even have to mix, as such - they just pushed all the faders up and it sounded BOB ON immediately without any mixing - which is rare to say the least) ... sorry, I keep getting sidetracked because I'm obsessed with UK Pop music from the 60's onwards mainly - there's no cure!.... BUT ANYWAY....! ... the KLF famously BURNED ONE MILLION POUNDS IN BRITISH BANK NOTES - their earnings from record sales and royalties ... They even made a TV documentary in the 80's showing them burning it, throwing bundles of £50 notes on the fire (It's even on You Tube if anyone is interested to check) ... THEN THE NEXT DAY, HAD REGRETS AND TOOK THE ASHES TO THE BANK, EXPECTING THEM TO CREDIT THEM WITH £1 MILLION QUID. The bank said they could only verify about £100,000 worth and so I think that's how much of it they got back. I was shocked they got ANY back. They were very posy "studenty" types, as you can imagine. The music industry is a VERY strange world.
Say what!? I just found out that Sweet did Love is like oxygen and fox on the run; not to mention ballroom blitz. Well I say just but I mean ten years ago
When I was little my dad had downloaded this song onto my little iPod nano and I didn't even know what doctor who was... years later when I got into it this song was constantly in my head and I've finally found it. Everything about this song makes sense now after all this time 😂
I was at a 'gentlemen's club' back in the late 80's. Three of the dancers were performing to this song. I was sitting right at the stage where one of them gave me the 'stare' as she danced. Need less to say, she got a lot of my money!
I was listening to Muse's new song "Will of the people" and it reminded me of a mix between Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson and this 😂 amazing! Muse should totally cover this or maybe even just go into this randomly in the middle of Will of the people. It would fit the band perfectly! lol
Did this in my 5th grade dance recital. I got sick of the other dances and music but not this one. By the way, my teacher asked if anyone knew who Dr. Who was and this one girl yelled out, “An animal doctor!” Lol
My copy was purchased on iTunes like two decades ago and still has copyright protection attached to it from the “old days” of digital music. I can only play it when logged into my iTunes or Apple Music.
What "dngillikin" said is absolutily correct. This is Doctorin' the TARDIS by The Timelords (AKA The KLF). I know, because I still have the original CD. :D
Oh for crying out loud. This song is called "Doctorin' The Tardis" by The Timelords (aka KLF, aka Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu (J.A.M.)). This song was made more than a full decade after and based on the Gary Glitter classic "Rock and Roll (Part Two)" , the 'Hey song" that you refer to... I wish people would do a little research before posting on youtube...
Haven't heard this song in over 20 years love it.
Jay Dub TAKES ME RIGHT BACK TO POP BEANS AND CLUBBING ALL NIGHT AND INTO THE MORNING!
