    Are they storing or using it?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 года назад

      Hey Ian, They will store it if I keep feeding it. The bees already have frames of beebread and we have been hitting them with patties till about 2 weeks ago. All of the colonies are slowing down to a couple frames of brood at most. What are your thoughts on dry sub? Do you see advantages to the broodnest in fall? Mine have just started showing interest and taking it in.

      As long as they take it to use it, I see a benefit using a dry supplement in spring.
      In the fall, I will supplement to use as they are forming the winter nest, then nothing.
      Do you see a benefit supplementing through winter without pollen flow? Or is there steady winter pollen in your area ?

      @@aCanadianBeekeepersBlogIan, I'm in Eastern Texas, our winters are nothing like yours, they are only a series of cold confronts. My bees are active in between fronts, so I supplement when they're flying so they will still have stores when they're clustered. When I see my bees harvesting corn meal from my chicken's feed, I know they need pollen.

      Ian, Kamon, Here is a study as to why your bee's need pollen in the winter. Not only for brood rearing. It goes into depth of what happens to the health of the honeybee.

    watching joe may showing what his bees do during a dearth, I see Kamon that you are right. My bees are flying from 12:30 till 3:30 before the weather changes here in Central Washington and I never have yet put out pollen sub. I have put fondant and camp sugar feeding on my bees, and think I should have done this too. My thoughts are to put spearmint and lemon grass oil drops in this food. If I would have done it like I should I would think Soy flour mixed with maybe teatree oil and the other essential oils and one other high protein flour I should have done. May be too late now. My bees start flying in the fall at around 50 degrees, and in the spring at around 40. that is 10c to springtime 4.5c

    Interesting, Kamon!
    Would the pollen not work better on the ground?
    The thinking there, is that if the bees are positively charged by flying and static, the pollen would be earthed better to ground, being on the ground, as a flower stem would be like an earth stake and take the negative to ground, through the stem.
    Just a thought.
    Thanks for posting the video.

      With all the rain we've had I keep some available for them just in case but we still have plenty of natural pollen coming in. Usually the only time mine take it is if we get in a dry period in the summer and the plants go into survival mode they will jump on it then. I feed mine patties because we have frames of brood year round but not enough pollen in our cool season.

    Nice video I think I'll stick to patties. The question is when? I live in the northern most part of New York it's very cold even now March 15th it's not freezing but it's cold enough to keep the bees in most of the day. I worry about putting pollen on the hives and having them ramp up too early but I also need my bees to really kick ass this year so I can expand and start making some money. I guess what I'm asking is, is there an ideal temperature or some sign I should be looking for to let me know when to put pollen patties on the hives in the spring?

  • @Makermook

    You partially answered my question at 2:50; this was accidental. Here's my question: If you make pollen substitute *available* in fall/winter, are you doing your bees a disservice by allowing them to brood when they normally wouldn't?

    • @easy-beezee6975

    • @kamonreynolds

      It doesn't and it won't incite robbing like syrup can. I prefer to have it 20 or so feet away but it doesn't have to be far. Sheds/barns and buckets works great for this

    Hello Kamon, there weather has bee cold and wet here in NY so I want to give my bees some pollen sub. Where is the best location to place it? And how do the bees find it? Should it be placed like 10 feet from the hive? Thanks.

    • @whiteoakapiaries
      @whiteoakapiaries 2 года назад

      You don't want to place food for your bees that close to the hive. The immediate area around the hive (15 foot radius or so) is pooping ground so you want to see it out a ways away from them. If they want it, they'll find it.

      @@nuruzzaman4893 A good rule of thumb we use in North America is to hold back on pollen supplements until after the winter solstice. However, if you have a healthy hive that is expanding as spring approaches, you may not need pollen supplements at all.

      You can feed 2:1 down to 50F in regions where it gets colder they use fondant or dry sugar. You can mix pollen sub with the sugar for extra protein.

    • @burleybeeyard
      @burleybeeyard 4 года назад

      I live in Mississippi where it’s 20 one day and 70 the next. Just wasn’t sure if while feeding 2;1 in frame feeder if it would hurt hive on those cold days.

    • @privatebubba8876
      @privatebubba8876 4 года назад +1

      @@burleybeeyard Most likely not they just won't use it because it drops their body temps. My bees start flying at around 50F. I don't like putting syrup in the hive during our cool season because of humidity it can add to what the girls generate naturally. During cold periods that humidity can condensate and fall back down on the bees like rain inside the hive if not properly ventilated and in some regions insulated.
