Make a pollen feeder

Before the trees start producing pollen the bees are desperate for anything resembling pollen. Make a little pollen feeder with the kids and watch how hundreds of bees find it and start to feed readily on pollen substitute. This will work for only a few weeks as once the trees are in bloom thats what the bees want. Since posting the video I see I did not title it correctly :( My website is www.BeeWhisperer.us

great video thanks. in my country Turkey, the hives have pollen trap at the entrance, so beekeepers can collect some pollen and sell it, or prepare pollen feed for early spring. the beekeepers suggests keeping collected pollen at the fridge and say it will rot otherwise. how do you prepare pollen feed?

I use a pollen substitute not real pollen. I plan to harvest pollen this summer, for sale not use.

How far should I put my feeder away from my hives?

Good morning. I was inspecting a colony yesterday for the first time this spring and when I found the queen she was being bald by a handful of bees. Have you ever seen this? I put her in a clip for a bit and I think they calmed down a bit before I let her go. hopefully they don't kill her, she is laying like crazy. Also I have a queenless 5 frame nuc, can I combine it with another colony that needs it with newspaper? If there is a laying worker will it still work? thanks for your time.

I haven't seen them balling an established queen, new one yes. You can certainly combine the nuc and strong hive with newspaper, makes for a super colony usually. Laying workers seem to subside in the presence of a good laying queen with brood as long as there are not too many of them.
