I am really at a loss to understand how these two sublime artists could have ever been compared. Tebaldi had a ravishing vocal endowment and she was a wonderfully disciplined artist. No reason whatsoever to compare her and Maria Callas. Both had different attributes, sought different artistic goals, and really specialized in their own respective repertoires. Tebaldi was a modern Twentieth Century soprano whose repertoire was rooted in Puccini and the verismo composers, as well as a few Verdi roles. Ms Tebaldi’s voice is bright and girlish and dark and angry and hopeful and playful, as -I think- the voice of Choi Choi in Madame Butterfly should sound. Callas' art was rooted in a much earlier period (bel canto) and she had a three octave range which enabled her to undertake everything. Callas did perhaps not have the vocal velvet of Tebaldi. She was a different artist altogether. Bashing one against the other is stupid and shows an innate ignorance about music. Two different artistic approaches COMPLETELY. Both divas defined a period in Italian opera that we will not likely encounter again.
I don't think the contrast issue should be one pertaining to music. What makes Mme Callas unique in her time is the fact that she always used her vocality in the service of acting, producing a profound synthesis. This approach was, though divergent in starting point, similar to the way that the great actor and countertenor Christopher Robson aimed at pure theatre. A balance between ego, technique and dramatic necessity is the grail of any artist, or certainly should be.
Callas is much better! Lower body fat %, she was exercising every day probably. Tebaldi definitely needed ABS training... and a few pounds off. Why would anybody compare them?!!!😀
@@car5car5 For some reason, excess weight favours the voice - think Tetrazzini, Pavarotti, Jessye Norman. And after Maria Callas slimmed down, she might have become one of the most glamorous women in the world, but her voice suffered perceptibly, as comparison of her recordings sadly demonstrates. But she is still one of the greatest artists of all time.
I've got to add that. I listened to the vinyl lp dozens and dozens of times but seeing her perform it in person in this filming 60 years later is a real thrill.
~Tebaldi is in superb voice here. 1960 is often said to be the very last year of her prime, ( not coincidentally, it was the year in which she lost her beloved mother.) But she certainly doesn't sound like she is at the end of anything here...

The magnificent Tebaldi 💙🌟
I met her in Westchester
A true artist! When I play Madama Butterfly, the vocal elegance of Renata Tebaldi is always a great lesson for me
Voce d angelo, ora canti in cielo.
How absolutely splendid!
Wunderbar!
Her voice is just pure gold

@@rosemaryallen2128 I am losing weight, now I sing better than Pavarotti, we'll see how I'll sing after losing 20 lb.
That's a voice that carries and can front an orchestra. Amazing.
Splendida 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Splendida 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Mamma che Voce……… L’attacco più perfetto in Assoluto.
From the first note ... Extraordinary.
THIS IS ART ❤

Renata singing un bel di was the first opera I was exposed to as a ten year old child. I will never forget the song and her voice and her feelings.
I've got to add that. I listened to the vinyl lp dozens and dozens of times but seeing her perform it in person in this filming 60 years later is a real thrill.
I agree. As a student I stood in line 3 hours to get standing room only ticket. She did not disappoint.
Semplicemente divina :)
I had many recordings of Tebaldi singing this aria - but this is the first time I had seen a video of her singing. Beautiful voice.
Bravissimo, Renata Tebaldi!

Chills and rapid heartbeat. Renata, you were unmatchable by any other talent or voice.
An all time great. I saw her on her farewell tour with Franco Corelli. Enormous voices, and they still sounded great.

She lost her mother in 1957.
