Surpal Singh Slathia, born in 1978 in Jammu, is an artist whose journey is deeply rooted in the ancient Indian tradition of “Behrupia.” Growing up in his hometown, Surpal was enchanted by the vibrant displays of “Behrupia” dramas, where individuals transformed themselves into the likeness of gods and goddesses, captivating audiences as they roamed from place to place to earn a livelihood. These performances left a lasting impression on him, sparking his interest in incorporating elements of this rich tradition into his creative endeavors.
As Surpal matured as an artist, he found himself drawn to the intricate interplay of colors and forms showcased by the “Behrupia” performances. The bold colors and vivid portrayals fascinated him, inspiring him to explore these themes in his own work. His artistic vision was deeply influenced by the challenges faced by the members of the “Behrupia” community, who strive tirelessly to support their families through their craft.

By capturing the essence of “Behrupia” in his art, he aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia and reverence for our cultural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the values and traditions that shape our society. Through his creative expression, Surpal seeks to rekindle the spirit of the “Behrupia” performers, illuminating the profound significance of their contributions to our cultural tapestry.
