Probably crossbow since you can have much more ammo and can use them in the isles. Bombs are good for a single target but what happens when you're in a prolonged situation with no meditation? Once you use up your bombs you're screwed big time.
I have done both crossbow only Witcher 3 and bomb only Witcher 3, while bombs do much more DMG and end fights quicker, and the unlimited spirit fixes the issue of limited bombs, crossbows with cat eyes and exploding bolts can stun lock bosses like Eredin and Detlaff, I found bomb only Detlaff to be very hard since you need to hit the hearts on phase 3 multiple times, and with limited bombs it can be very hard, I managed to do it but I prefer crossbow. Main take away being crossbows are good at stun locking bosses and alright at other things, while bombs decimate groups and lack on bosses. Also getting the Nilfgaardian Guardsman Gauntlets for 50% Crit Hit DMG is in my opinion better for better DPS than full manticore set, paired with the New Moon trousers and Toussaint knight steel sword for max Crit Hit DMG setup and keeping manticore armor, boots, and silver sword for the 3/6 set bonus, Hunter Instinct also doesn't apply to bombs, only to swords and crossbows since they are considered "Weapons", I have tested, trust me. Superior Samum bomb can help give 100% Crit hit rate for consistent DMG. Pretty good build none the less, fun way to play.
Prolongation is unblocked blows you land on enemies with your swords. You could also use cat school techniques and rune your armor to be all light armor ( Levity), that'll give you an extra 100% crit damage for your bombs! For sword runes you could use dumplings ( to make food useful again), and Invigoration and see if you get 50% added damage to bombs. But I think Preservation for added armor was a good choice. You can also use the lab in the cellar at Corvo Bianco to give yourself one extra bomb use.
@@norzza If I remember correctly I was also using the Nilfguardian gloves and some of the new moon set too. You lose the 6 piece bonus of the Manticore set, but you gain a lot more crit damage and chance. I also had swords with 100% crit damage bonus too. It's been awhile but I'm sure I remember 12k+ crits.
@@steveozone4910 From what I have experienced, I was able to achieve 136,971 DMG from 1 grapeshot, and with 6 bombs using the lab table and cockatrice decoction, 821,826 total firepower. This is including crits.
Metamorphosis activates upon critical effects or status effects which bombs do most of the time, this was kinda my build before I switched into a signs + Alchemy Metamorphosis build. you do have to use the Cockatrice decoction and then refill at your alchemy table in Corvo Blanco to add the additional bombs and potion use. though I branched out into taking Razor Focus to get a faster boost in activating hunter instinct which also applies the crit damage bonus due to the manticore set. for the swords I opted for additional status effect activations, you'll have bleed from the swords, poison from poisoned blades with fixative, and burn/stun from runes (though burn is better since you can use axii just to stun an opponent, which you can also use at some guards out of combat to buff decoctions). for the armor I got Levity and utilized Cat school techniques for another 100% crit damage boost, the other glyphs for other parts were mainly Greater Glyphs of Mending so you'll get a constant vitality regen. for decoctions you mainly use up the cockatrice as specified earlier so you don't buff it with metamorph, then have Troll, Arachas, Echidna, Ekkimara, Water Hag (since you'll aim to get max HP most of the time), and Katakan for crit rate.

The key is a metamorphosis build, but you sell (vendor in toussaint) or destroy all decoctions except cockatrice and water hag. If water hag wasn’t so ungodly good for this build (+50% bomb damage and burn/poison dmg) you could run just cockatrice. Anywho. The trick is to keep trigger metamorphosis, which triggers cockatrice, which recharges a bomb. Then you chug a white honey and you essentially end up with infinite bombs and potions as long as you can apply critical effects. The next key is +crit dmg >>>> for your equipment, so the absolute best thing you can do is manually draw hjalmars steel sword (+199% crit dmg), manticore armor (+25% crit dmg), manticore boots (+25% crit dmg), nilgaardian gaunts (+50% crit dmg) and manticore trousers. Put levity on the chest piece, then you need cat school techniques so you get 100% more crit dmg. Furthermore, run hunters instinct, battle frenzy, and razor focus. Then because you can spam potions you pop 2 superior Maribor every fight to have 3 adren points. This gives you a further 100% crit and 24% crit chance. In total you’re looking at ~500% extra crit dmg, which is multiplied by the number of green skills you have that increase bomb dmg, which is multiplied by heavy artillery (x3) which is then multiplied by another 50% when you get water hag decoc to proc.
Breezed through death march(early to mid game) with bomb build. But it heavily falls off late game. Although I'm not sure if it does fall off late in easier eifficulties.

Has anyone played it with this build on Death March? I have done several tests with a Gargoyle npc and I have had to throw three shrapnel bombs to eliminate him. I have done the same test again with the dimerite bomb, I have thrown all four of them and I have had to give it several sword blows. PD: I have made some adjustments, putting on the light armor and putting on the skill, techniques from the cat school and with two hive bombs I have pulverized the Gargoyle and I am playing it at a fairly normal level at lv 46
