a couple of thoughts for you are, you can do the bag method again except next time try only bringing the bag to the top of the pot (using a grocery style bag vs a ziplock) and closing it up. This way the leaves/stems are not closed in the bag and you help with preventing rot on them. The soil will stay moist longer though you still want to make sure no mold grows on it. You could sprinkle cinnamon prior to it to help control the mold. For the string method where the string is in the soil from the top, you can put a cover over the cup you used to help with less evaporation of the water and condensation will build up a little, which will help keep more water for longer in the cup. Last but not least, the upside water bottles, I suggest drilling holes in the top that are a bit bigger than the pin you used. I don't think they were big enough, so the water was not able to flow out properly. No matter the result, it is good to do experiments. GREAT JOB!!
These are amazing tips, I totally agree with all of them!! I hadn’t thought of the cinnamon part before, such a great idea to prevent some mold. I tested with larger holes and it worked really well so you are definitely right. I’ll keep the other bag trick and covering the water cup in mind too next time I need to use these. Great advice, thanks so much ❤️❤️🥰

this over view of your watering plants while you are away is so informative, i have left my plants the tops two weeks and i still ask a friend to look at them for me. but seeing the methods you use and the outcome is so life saving because now we know which method worked. you are doing a lovely job with your videos
You’re like a real like MacGyver the way you created all of these watering systems! Love the beginning and that guy who was mimicking your intro 😂 🤣 he’s hilarious you should definitely have him on more often. Great stuff I learned so much as always!
Thanks for sharing your experiment about self watering system.I like the string method.I will try it for my vegetables during summer season. And l love to see your indoor plants,so beautiful 😍.
Interesting experiment Plant Mama! I think the size of the root-balls and whether you left them in conditions similar to their natural environments determined a success or fail. All your tropical plants seemed to prefer the make shift plant bubbles. I’ve learned alot thanks for sharing!🌱
a couple of questions about your rope method? How did you get the rope all the way up the inside of the pot or was it just at the bottom of the pot? Would it work if the rope is just at the bottom of the dirt? Can I use yarn for the rope or do I need to use that plant wicking rope? Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video The upside down bottles didn't work because no air entered. If you had opened a needle sized hole at the bottom, it would hav eworked.
Just poke a second hole on the opposite side of the bottle, facing up towards the ceiling. As water drips from the hole at the bottom end, air can enter at the top. Without the air hole, low pressure will develop inside the bottle relative to outside and prevent water dripping out. It's the same reason you can suspend a coaster on an upsidedown glass of water.
This is such an informative video, thanks for sharing. I'm wondering if the bottles didn't work because they were glass and the milk jugs were plastic.
Kathi's Projects Of course! They were all plastic, and after this I tried poking 5 holes into the lids instead of just one and left them in a plant overnight and it was draining out! So I think more/bigger holes definitely helped. My thinking is the screw top might have been more secure vs the flip on lid for the milk jugs. Thanks for watching 💚
I chose the string method because my skills at taking care of plants are simply hopeless, (I am a beginner and some of my first flowers have already died😅). So, as I was saying, I chose it not because I travel often (but that's also true and I do) but because I thought that in this way the flowers would choose exactly the quantity of water that they need and I can't provide (either I give too much or too little). Please, do you consider this as a good permanent method that can be used or is it just a shortcut and I should not rely on it? Thank you! 🙏🏻

Plant Mama Tatiana I know I saw! I’m curious how well this works long term! But you should lots of ways to accomplish the self watering feature so that was awesome!
PlantyPrincess92 unfortunately I don’t think they can work really long term because a lot of the water reservoirs run out pretty quickly and would eventually need to be refilled! If you can only get someone to come care for your plants once as opposed to weekly, it’s a great idea to do this and have them refill the self watering systems!!

I have never seen a watering system like this...very effective I love this! Where did you go away to? Plant Mamma you need to explain this baby neglect ;-) x
I was amazed by the success of the wick watering method! do you think this would be a reliable way to keep plants adequately moist long term? It takes me forever to water my plants and i'm trying to find an easier way to keep all of them happy without sacrificing hours of my day for just watering. Thank you for doing this video! It was very informative :)
I did not poke holes in the bag so that the plant would not dry out. I definitely recommend a bag on the larger side compared to the plant so there is enough air in there (and I even puffed a few breaths into the bag before closing). I would definitely love to experiment with holes in the bag to see if that makes a difference!

Great information! It was great to see and hear your test result summaries from the various methods. I’ve never left my plants for more than a week and a half. Most of mine are cacti and succulents and they don’t care how long I’m gone lol. The rush to get back home came when I started adding houseplants and fish to my life😂

What a great video! I loved that you were brave enough to test out all these methods- the results were so interesting. I'm *hoping* to be going on vacation in late June and again in October and have been trying to think of how to deal with my plants- I even thought I might hire a plant sitter, lol. I think I'll test a few of these ideas out between now and then and see what could work.
Yes definitely test some of them out while you can still observe!! I also thought of a plant sitter, if there’s any important plants maybe you can drop them off at a family or friends place to watch as well! Thanks so much for watching and good luck, let me know how it works out for you 😊
I still use these methods when I am leaving my plants for a long period of time! I have the string method on one of my plants now full time and it consistently works, I just have to fill up the water bucket when it runs out!
@@Plant_Mama thank u for replying! What plants do u think will do well with the string method full time & which plants should the string method never be used on? Cuz honestly the more plants I get the harder it is to keep track of all there different trimming of watering schedules so if I can use the string method for all or most would be a blessing!
@@violettraine1029 plants that need to dry out between waterings wouldnt work well with the string method full time (cacti, succulents, for example), plants that would do better are the ones that like to stay consistently moist (like a colocasia or elephant ear). I would say just give it a try with a few plants and monitor them to make sure they’re not getting too soaked. This method is probably better to test over the summer when the plants need more water. Good luck!

I have never had that plant before so I don’t want to guarantee anything without having tried it myself, but the water wicking method can definitely work if set up correctly, or getting a self watering planter! Depending how small yours is and how much it loves humidity, I also think the plastic bag method can work if you don’t water it too much beforehand!

That’s 3 weeks... I don’t know if I can handle that long! Lots of people though would use self-watering system in daily basis... semi-hydroponic is another method... this system would make many people able to have more time/plants
If you can find a plastic bag big enough I would definitely try that! Spray onto the leaves and in the bag and seal it up and that will help keep the humidity and moisture on the leaves!

R u still using the self watering method on ur plants? If so how have they been doing since u started the string method up to now?
Good luck!

Zabis kitchen Thanks!
Hi, what fabric is the string made of?
I used cotton but I hear nylon, acrylic, and other materials work great too!
Very useful share👍😀✨🌸🌼waoo new one☘️🌱
Thanks!
Can this method be used with my Monstera Thai Constellation ?
I have never had that plant before so I don’t want to guarantee anything without having tried it myself, but the water wicking method can definitely work if set up correctly, or getting a self watering planter! Depending how small yours is and how much it loves humidity, I also think the plastic bag method can work if you don’t water it too much beforehand!
@@Plant_Mama thank you!
23 days my all my flowers and plants would be dead 😂 Self waters is awesome way to save time for you to just sit and relax and just enjoy 🌸🌺🌼🌻 Have a great days hun🌸🌺🌼🌻

For the bags you just need to leave a little opening on the top not closed all the way 👍🏼.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice sharing my best friend
very good
That’s 3 weeks... I don’t know if I can handle that long! Lots of people though would use self-watering system in daily basis... semi-hydroponic is another method... this system would make many people able to have more time/plants
Plant s And other things Yes I agree, would definitely save time day to day!

Good experimenting 👍👍,i also keep experimenting with my plants. New Sub gardening friend. 💞
Thanks for watching!
What kind of self watering system would you advise or consider to use for the Bromeliad plant?
They are generally watered from the top.
If you can find a plastic bag big enough I would definitely try that! Spray onto the leaves and in the bag and seal it up and that will help keep the humidity and moisture on the leaves!
Very useful content ..new friend here
Thanks!
Nice 👍
Thanks!
Omg you've been away for 23 days? 😱😱😱
Love your ideas..
mridula's creatives Thank you so much!
very.very.nice..
Tatiana your such a mommy😍
very.nice..
String needs to touch the bottom of reservoir and the reservoir should to be higher than the plant so gravity can help.
I hope you can do a new video soon, we miss you
So what's the best method?
I recap in the end but I believe it is the string method, although it depends on the plant!
