Great video. I actually enjoy watering my plants. On Sundays, I put on some classical or jazz records and make a pot of tea. Then I start going through my home watering and tending to over 200 houseplants in my studio apartment. Don't judge!!! Some people drink . . . some people do drugs . . . I do junglmania! Lol. I end up so relaxed and zenned out by the time I am done. I have a lovely collection of African Violets and ferns. Living in Arizona makes the air very dry. Your wonderful self-watering system will help keep them not just alive but thriving. Thank you for your very detailed instruction.
I’m right there with you Jeanette! I lost count of how many I have in my flat. I’ve gotten more since we have to be home more too. Can I ask what type or mix do you use for the soil for your ferns? I am just starting to collect these beauties. Happy house-planting!! 🌸🌱🌴🎋🌿🌸
This video is very detailed! I have been searching the internet for a good explanation of how self watering systems work, and I understood everything in this one video. Thanks so much!
This is the absolute best explanation of self watering I have ever heard. I just transitioned a couple of plants to LECA and want to use self watering vs the closed system. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
I discovered the 2 liter thing when I was propogating a ton of basil once. I did not use the wick / cloth, but that's a very good next step in my process. This is the best plant channel on youtube. Thank you.
I go back and forth between this video & your pumice video. Every time I re-watch I learn something new! I have been confused about which method is best, BUT today I realize both methods include your recommendation of having pumice as the barrier to hold the best amount of water needed! I'm a fan of everything you do! Many thanks!⚘
Very interesting. I just purchased some small self watering pots. I am looking forward to seeing the results I will get. I am also curious how the plants will do outside in this system.
Excellent and always well explained! I love your channel and just came across as i have a lot of problems with my indoor plants and this is due to inexperience. .....so your videos are perfect for me! Thanks and always well done!
A wonderful, and the most complete and clear explanation, of self-watering systems in pots. I bought some self watering planters for the basil and herbs I want to plant indoors to have all year. ‘’Thank you.
Is there a difference between the function of the reservoir and the quick systems? Does one keep the substrate wetter than the other? Do different plants do better in a given system? Heh, I just realized you could make a whole video on those questions! This was very informative. Thank you! 💚
man i really needed this! i have around 120 130 dont know ive lost count of my plants and when you have many types of plants this can save you a lot of time!
Thank you for a detailed "video on the "self watering system". It is very helpful to plan and repot our plants. Can we trim the water roots if they out grow? What kind of fertilizers are suitable for a self watering system plants? On the average how many days we don't have to water the plants? Does the Nylon robe becomes mouldy and clog so water can't be absorbed ? Which type of robe/wick is long lasting?
Excellent explanation on self watering system. Q: Should there be a dry period depending on the type of plant? For example, is there a dry period for an Aglaomena Sparkling Sarah? And for how long?
Hi. Good video thank you I finally got to understand how this system works and why I see so many self watering systems around, not knowing which one to pick. Since now I see they all work I’ll keep the one started to adapt to my pots already which is using a small Dixie cup with holes in it, but no rock, just soil touching the water. My question for you is: is this system good for all plants, even those not needing water that often- will they just take what they need sort to say, or is it good just for plants that require daily watering? Also, is this method good for seed planting or just for plants.thanks for your help I’m just starting my veggie garden and since I’m not very good at watering my plants regularly I’m trying to find something that will work for me. I appreciate your help
The one you showed at the end that's been in your home, how do you know when the plant has exhausted all the water in the reservoir/how do you know when to add water?
Its really cool! Now I am doing it for all my home plants. I updated it even with strew which stayed in the pot and wooden stick which helps me to check the level of water in the pot:)
Very good video, thank you so much! How often do you give fertilizer to the plants in this system? Maybe less then usual, cause it's watering it constantly?
Thank you so much for training Is is it possible to use the fiber cloths for big vase which has a whole keeping the water under the vase and some gap between them
Great video, thank you. I was just wondering, with the first example... instead of the bottle neck, I was planning to poke shoe laces through the holes in the nursery pot, does it matter if the laces/fabric goes all the way through to the surface of the plant?
I like your videos. Thank you so much for these. I am very interesting for to do self watering system. Can I do it also for pilea peperomoides? I am sorry for my bad English. I hope you understand what I mean 🙂. Greetings from a German people, who lives in Finland. 🤗
Great video. I'm a fan of self-watering systems as it removes a lot of the guesswork. I do have a question/request: can you show/teach us how to get your vining plants like that marvelous Hoya that you have climbing a ring and eventually forming a wreath? I would like to try that as I feel it will be a great way to have it "climb" apart from my trailing ones and my staked one. Thanks so much and appreciate all the learning from your channel!!!
Hi guys, love your channel!! I have a question… I have just planted my pothos in self watering pot with a wick like you showed in the video in the end…Now 4-5 days are gone but my substrate is still very wet … I was wondering if I have done something wrong …do I have to put leca or Pomice on the top of wick then put plant or I can put directly on the wick? Will my plant would survive like this or am I over watering it ? Waiting for your answer …. TIA
Hi, just discovered your channel and love it! I have a question. I have bought different self-watering pots, but they don’t come with the nylon rope. How will the roots go get their water? Thanks.
Another alternative would be to put the plant into a net pot or a plastic flower pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Thread a nylon rope or a shoelace through the holes and then add your soil medium. Then put the net pot or plastic flower pot into a slightly bigger outer pot that can be a glass or plastic container. Fill the bottom of the outer pot with water making sure that the water level is below the drainage holes. In this way, you save on buying pumice. In my country, pumice is very expensive.
Hello, I am one of your Subscriber and enjoy watching your content, They are really educating and Inspiring. I have a question, can we use perlite instead of Volcanic rock??
Thanks so much for this information. I was hoping you could answer one question. The wick that we add only needs to go to the base of the roots? As in the floor of pot used? Thanks again
Hello thanks for this great video, as always 👍 I bought self warering pots but my plants get rotten. The base of the stem of my syngonium macrophilla roted in 2 weeks I don't understand why 🤔🤔 when you have a self watering pot, do you put water through the soil or only through the pipe ?
Hello and thank you for the great video!! can I ask you if we want to do the second method, the DIY one with the fiber cloth, can we use a normal plastic pot instead of the glass one? also, how and how often do we need to water the plants in such a system? thank you!
Does the micro fibre cloth separating the leca from the soil act as a wick for the water in the leca layer and will also be saturated with water which then can make the soil up to the surface also damp enough to provide adequate water for the roots of the plant? If so is the wick from the bottom of the pot up the side of the pot really necessary?
I love your informative videos -thank you! I made a self-watering pot (using the empty plastic water bottle and fabric strip), at first it was very successful and my Prayer Plant cutting began to thrive but then after a few months there was fungus gnats in the soil, I guess if the soil stays perpetually moist it will attract and become a breeding ground for fungus gnats. Did you encounter such a problem with self-watering systems? Do you have any advice for prevention? Thanks again.
My question is a little bit off topic, but is about watering, soil and oxygen content of the soil, and I wonder about the health of the plant. So, I want to try out a new potting soil mix, it says 1 part coco peat + 1/2 part vermiculite + 1 part worm casting or other similar organic material. I usually tend to over water my plants by using potting soil which is too heavy in organic material and soak it really good and let the water drain out, it takes quite a few weeks to dry out. My question is, would the above mentioned new potting mix good to solve my issue? Also from what I'm understanding coco peat even if moist it is fluffy and it would contain some amount of oxygen + the vermiculite which is pours would keep some oxygen.
Thank you so much for great self watering planter ideas. I love all of your videos. They are very informative and knowledgeable. I am new to Calathea. I got my 1st Calathea a month ago and planning to give her a self watering planted. I think I can give cotton rope instead of nylon rope because I have only cotton rope at home. I hope that will otherwise please let me know if I am wrong. Thank you so much for all of your great videos :) eventhough it is too early to wish, merry Christmas and happy new year 😀 I hope upcoming year will bring happier, healthier, and wealthier life to you, me, and everyone else 💖
I have some indoor cuttings in water.. they have grown roots... can they just live in water forever? Would i have to change the water periodically or would they prefer soil as well? If they prefer soil, why? And do they need plant food... or is just water ok?
Can self-watering systems be used for succulents and cacti? I stress out the most about watering those and have killed many many many of such plants... =(
I live in Arizona and have tons of cacti and succulents. I wouldn’t do this method for those plants. I give my succulents 4 Tablespoons if water per plant, per month. Cacti gets 2 Tablespoons. This is based on a 4” plant. Add 1 tablespoon per inch of plant height. I know it doesn’t seem like “enough water” but it really is. Hope this helps
Can a tube be connected from to the base of the pot to an external "reservoir" / container, so that the plant can draw the desired amount of water by itself?
So to get the water in the bottom you have a 2 container system either were you take out inner pot or find something with a tube that leads to the bottom with water lvl bobbers . Or do your glass jar system . I got a bucket with just the soil /water seperator insert . Sorry I am new . How do i get the water to the bottom ? or is my set up like the glass jar already . Just water and the excess will drain away ? Or should I find a water tube and bobber still ?Or just toss the insert and do your glass jar set up ?
Can you please make a video about the flushing and cleaning that some people regularly do if they grow in inorganic medium to remove dried salts from the medium
Is their a certain height at which this would not work? If the microfiber cloth for example is 1ft from the water to the soil then would it still work?
Can u please suggest if there is any mechanism that helps in watering for vacation, I am planning for a month vacation and I do not have the feasibility to have some one to water my plants, neither I can have drip irrigation method as my plants in a balcony where there is no water line.

I’m curious to know what happens if you go on holiday?! If you don’t have anyone to help water the plants, what do you do?
@@lengl1125 they die!
U may also need to train your plants to take a "holiday" too 😅

BRILLIANT! And I made four, for the cost of one ready-made self-watering pot. Thanks.
Very interesting. I just purchased some small self watering pots. I am looking forward to seeing the results I will get. I am also curious how the plants will do outside in this system.
Great way to care for plants while on long holidays/vacations.
Wow, just about exactly what I needed to know. I'm watching this like a religious epiphany. Absolutely beautiful explanation if I do say so myself.
This was very educational. Thank you for sharing this explanation about wicking the water to the plant!
Excellent and always well explained! I love your channel and just came across as i have a lot of problems with my indoor plants and this is due to inexperience. .....so your videos are perfect for me! Thanks and always well done!

I have really admired the self watering system. I will try to make one.
Hi I guess you gave me most of the issues I had to develop a self watering cement pot. Thanks much appreciated.

Great teaching. Makes it easy to understand.
Nature works so smartly to save its creation👌👍🏻extra waters go deep into the earh and mixes there with streams underground

Great Video, thanks. ❤
Thank you so much - a lot of my questions were answered with this video!
What a great informative video! Thank you!
Can I use rocks instead of Leca?
Thanks for sharing. Neat system!
Do you recommend microfiber or cotton cloth? I would think that microfiber would retain the moisture and not allow for easy capillary action.
I have a large glass vase I’m going to try this with for visual affect as well.
Thank you for the information. How often do you water? Once a month?
By the time your DIY system breaks down it will be time to replant anyway. So the DIY actually saves you a great deal of money.
WOW!! thanks!! So interesting
A genius idea!!! Love your videos!!!

Kratky methods very good
Does the self watering container not require an overflow hole especially for outdoor planters

My self love factory pot self watering longtime use.
Yes you can do this also with acrylic string or a paper towel 😎
Thanks very much, swedish guy!
