My girl Aretha Franklin has been singing a long time there will never be another voice like her rest in peace Aretha Franklin your music will live on until the end of time
".....& friend???" Do a little research. Give a little credit. Aretha's playing here with the great Ray Johnson. Johnson was Johnny Otis' piano man, and recorded throughout the 60's with folks including Rick Nelson, Nat Cole, Sam Cooke, and Frank Sinatra.
I am so blessed and thankful to have lived in the same time as the Queen of Soul to witness her greatness live, rest in power my Queen 👑👏 job well done 🙏
Yes That man is Mr. Ray Johnson, and he is very much alive and you can see him LIVE at the Arcadia blues club in Arcadia CA.! HE PLAYS AND SINGS INCREDIBLE...!
Blown away by her. That voice is so powerful the neither the building nor the mic can handle it. You can hear her voice bouncing all over that place. It's not just that she had a powerful voice. Listen to that tone. she moves like she is music. Those lower register runs were great.
As John Kelly( formerly of Radio Ulster an now with RTE) used to say when introducing her....."Stand up for The Queen.......Aretha Franklin !"....Here she is the happiest I have ever seen her.. joy full..singing her heart (and soul) out Not flying...soaring...and bringing her partner and us up there with her.
I love seeing Aretha so young and slim and with a happy expression as she performs this song - and I appreciate how Shindig! staged so many numbers so simply, and in black & white, which kind of adds to your appreciation of what you're hearing, with no visual distractions.
@@yvonnebrown7096 We definitely had color TV in the USA when "Shindig!" was being shown. In fact one of the competing rock shows on another network - "Hullabaloo" on NBC - was in color at the same time.
@@donmullinsinsuranceagency9198 All nighttime primetime shows on the three American networks all switched to color in the fall of 1966, for the new television season.
Although I'm a fan of Aretha Franklin and I like this version of the Inez and Charlie Foxx (siblings) single (reached #7 in 1963), the Aretha version is the "gold standard" only if you compare it to the popular (reached #5 in 1974) Carly Simon version. The Aretha version, by the way, reached #94 in 1967. The gold standard of this terrific will always be the original.
Thank you he seems a gentle soul with a smile quite capable of melting a mountain, excellent thing he still delivers wonderful perfomances, thanks & cheers.
On this day in 1965 {March 10th} Aretha Franklin performed "Mockingbird" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Two years later on December 17th, 1967 her covered version of the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #94; the following week it was again at #94, and that was also its last week on the Top Top 100... It did a little bit better north of the border; it reached #57 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart... In 1963 Inez Foxx's original version peaked at #7 on the Top 100 and in 1974 Carly Simon & James Taylor's covered version reached #5 on the chart...
It was also covered by Carly Simon & James Taylor. It was also covered in Australia by Johnny O'Keefe & Del Juliana. They are unknowns but in 1964 Johnny did a Talent Show and a 16 Year Old Won who became a Legend who was recently made a Dame by The Queen. That of course is Olivia Newton-John.
So agree with you Stephanie! Especially with all of the mean mugging faces and obscene gestures that are associated with other types of (so-called) music, some of which I really do like!
This is awesome seeing this old video of Aretha wow love this song. so many great musicians, singers, performers came and come from New Orleans, Louisiana. My family roots are from there, my mother played the piano, never took lessons, she just loved to entertain people.
Happy birthday, Aretha! You are truly an American treasure. When I hear you sing, I feel freedom, no matter what I'm going through at the time. Thank you for the gift you've blessed us with!
They were singing it; Mr. Ray Johnson was playing it; and the Band was grooving it, way back in the 1960's. But I never knew who that man was - BURNING IT UP - key boarding until I watched this video. Thank Heaven somebody filmed it and have preserved it...for US to ENJOY over 50 years later. WOW!!! Aretha was at her best in voice and physique. She was never better, neither in interpretation nor in delivery !!
what wellythonveria said. THis song is so happy-making, it should go on and on and on. I can't get tired of it. Soon as it's over I wantto hear it again. i DO love Inez Foxx's version as much, her voice is more clarion, and her pitch is so true it makes me just want to scream, so sweet
This IS SO COOL!! Growing up in The Motor City during the Sixties was such a privilege being near to ALL The Motown and Detroit Rock n Roll shows. Now, Living in Music City as an adult has been equally rewarding!
Not only can eat the same he's one of the best artists I've ever heard on this planet we call Earth he's amazing he should be more recognized and I love him this is great music This Is Beautiful music I love all y'all and thank you so much for stopping by thank you I'm happy I'm not the only one that love great music cuz all y'all love great music cuz that's why you're on here and I love all of y'all now hold on we got we got one coming up next hold on
"Mockingbird” is a song about love, longing, and the fear of losing someone dear to your heart. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who is hoping her lover will buy her a mockingbird as a token of affection. However, if the bird doesn’t sing, the woman requests a diamond ring instead. The song expresses her fear that if the diamond ring doesn’t shine, her lover will break her heart. This song beautifully portrays the vulnerability and uncertainty that can exist in relationships. It encapsulates the longing to be loved and the fear of losing that love. Aretha’s heartfelt delivery of the lyrics adds a layer of depth to the emotions expressed.
Not really... The original single was credited to Inez Foxx with vocal accompaniment by her brother Charlie, as they alternated the lyric on a syllabic basis. Considered something of a novelty song. ~interweb
We can tell that this guy that just sung with Aretha Franklin was nothing less than GREAT either coz he was featured here singging side by side with Aretha Franklin near or at her best and he didnt get overshadowed. Such a charismatic guy and very talented too !!! My hat is of for him !!!
I remember the first time I ever heard this song was by Inez and Charlie Fox still sounds good to this day but I never knew Aretha Franklin song too she got a beautiful voice but nobody could sing that song like Inez and Charlie Fox
This arrangement was written by Johnny O'Keefe from Australia. In those days you could not copyright an arrangement, so he never got a cent for all the times American artists covered it. You can also find James Taylor and Carly Simon doing the same arrangement. Bobby McFerrin does a different, but fantastic arrangement. You can find all these on youtube.
OMG she sang it so amazingly! i first discovered this version of the song at my choir, we're singing it at the moment approximately like this except of course no Aretha... anyway i love it! She is fearless to the point of being casual when she bursts out so clear and high
He's got a solid voice himself, and seems to be enjoying himself.

The greatest female soul singer ever
She was just born to sing. Period. Mic dropped.

Love this song, many people sung it.
And this is why she's the queen of soul!!!!!
Nobody sings like Aretha.
I love me some Aretha Franklin, but Ray Johnson was singing harmony AND playing piano at the same time. Awesome, both!
***** Ohhhh, Yeahhh!!!
She can play and sing as well
She plays her *** off on the piano!
Aretha Franklin can play the piano and sang in key harder than he could.
Stephon Jackson Let them know, "don't play that song" for me shows those ability
Unbelievable. Ray Johnson does perfect support for the sweetest, most fluid, powerful and amazing voice I've ever heard.
Rip dear Aretha
