What the highlights didn’t show was after Thompson turned the ball over on downs at their own 20 with about 1:20 left, Auburn’s coach had the QB take three knees out of the shotgun formation while Thompson still had two timeouts, which pushed them back to the 44 yard line and made them punt with 28 seconds left If they just took normal knees from under center or ran regular plays then they could have gone for it on fourth down from the 25 or so and just given Thompson the ball back at their own 25 with 25 seconds left down nine points. Literally the only way Thompson could win the game is if they blocked a punt and retuned it, but the Auburn coach’s kneel down strategy made it possible for Auburn to punt in the first place.
Hindsight right? Let's say he did just that and they fumbled and Thompson ran it all the way back for a TD, then everyone would be saying he should have taken a knee 3 times and punted on 4th down.
@@patrickdezenzio4988 the issue isn’t kneeling on the ball. The issue is kneeling out of the shotgun formation and losing a total of 24 yards. If you kneel four times from under center you lose a total of about 5-6 yards and then you can just give Thompson the ball back at their own 25 yard line with about 25 seconds left. Reminds me of a regular season game we had this year against a rival team that would put us in the playoffs we were down 21 to 7 in the start of the 4th and put up 2 touchdowns and tied it up but they scored with about 4 min left we drove down the field but couldn’t convert on 4th with 1:10 left or so well we did what we could on defense but having no timeouts would be hard the only bet would be a high snap into the end zone for a safety and exactly that happened we got a safety and the we got the ball back at our 45 we had a few completions and on the last play of the game from the 30 we threw it up and our tightens caught the pass with no time left winning us the game (we hadn’t beat this team in 14 years)
The special teams coach for Auburn had to let them boys know that they can touch the ball before 10 yards. No. 7 let’s it bounce right past him. That’s a great team win by Thompson and giving the effort not to give up on that game even though it looked lost.

If auburn didn't get so cocky at the end then they would've won, that's why you play all the way until the end, not every team concedes defeat at the end of the game, some teams play until the clock hits 0
Forget the lack of effort by the punter...or #7 not fielding the onside kick for Auburn...who in their right mind, with 1:19 to go in a state championship game, a 9 point lead, possession of the ball and a fresh set of downs at their opponents 20 yard line decides to kneel on it from a shotgun formation three plays in a row which eventually backs them up to midfield?!?! Auburn knew they wouldn't be able to kill all the clock with Thompson still having timeouts left to burn. Running the ball up the middle doesn't give up as much field position and burns just as much of the clock, if not more. This was a coaching staff snafu from start to finish. I really hate it for those kids to lose in such a fashion!!
Actually taking a knee on the fresh set of downs was the right call in that situation because it's deep on the opponent's side of the field. Had it been on your side of the field, you run a few plays because you want to still avoid punting the ball. You force the other team to burn all timeouts and run the clock down to about 30 seconds without risking the chance of a fumble. Also scoring is relatively moot here because it remains a two-score lead regardless. However, the 2 HUGE mistakes the Auburn team did were taking 10 yard kneel downs (a single shotgun snap + kneeldown is only about 4-5 yards), and punting the ball on 4th down. Starting at the opponent's 20, they should've taken 4 shotgun snap kneeldowns which would've given the ball back to Thompson between their 35-40 yard line with about 25 seconds left. In that essence the game is all but over; Thompson would need a couple of chunk plays just to set up a field goal attempt with virtually no time left.
