I love how out-there you brainstormed for Kirby abilities, but I'd have to say Construction is ultimately my favorite because it feels the most like something HAL would actually make. I can already envision the pink puffball smacking enemies with a wrench, shaking the ground with a jackhammer, building small robots to help him attack, and spinning enemies around with a comically-sized drill. Also, your Kirby sprite is so cute!!
Both of those show up in Kirby 64 actually. Rock and Bomb combine to make a dynamite ability which has Kirby shielding himself from the blast with a construction helmet, and Rock and Cutter create the drill you mentioned.
@@skunthundler Maybe they could pull that move directly from 64 into the kit, kinda like how they gave Fire stuff from Burning and Ice stuff from Freeze. Also Dynamite's another great idea. Construction can often involve destruction too.
There isn't a Cat Kirby, no, but there is an Animal Kirby that's sort of along those lines. Kind of a mole/Tasmanian devil type thing. Kirby tends to shy away from real world animals outside of the Animal Friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3, probably so the world can feel more fantastical and dream-like. Great video! It's interesting to see how someone that's largely unfamiliar with the series interprets it, and your spritework is really nice.
As a Tasmanian I am both shocked and amused at the comparison between Animal Kirby and a Tassie Devil given how dissimilar they are- But I'm glad I looked it up anyway, its an adorable copy ability!
In the Kirby Dreamland games, he gets allies. They’re mainly just real world animals that you team up with to fight baddies, but it is fun Kirby’s placement on the animals changes. For instance, for the goldfish partner, rather than riding on top, Kirby’s head actually sticks out of his mouth. It’d be cool to see you design an ally and a team up sprite!
I absolutely loved the spritework at the end!! The design looked brilliant! I think the only thing that seemed a little weird to me was Kirby's face in the animation - it looked like it wasn't quite lining up with the movement of the punch (mostly his eyes, it looks as if his left eye is not connected to his face). But it might just be the animation student in me haha. Brilliant work! excited to see what you make next :)
Yea the animation definitely about the left eye was off, as it was moving towards the left while the punch was going on and it moved too far, causing a odd appearance to it compared to the draft version of it. Still looks great if we are ignoring that flaw however since the punch looks fantastic.
"Baby, you got a slime going!" Amazing. If you were to add the actual slime from the still image hanging off Kirby's hand to the animation, what would you do with it? Just curious.
😄 Good question! I'd probably use 2-3 of the green shades in a row to create a horizontal gradient/strip of pixels. But the reason I didn't do that is because of the changing direction with pulling the hand back; the slime trails would have to react to that motion and I didn't think there'd be that great of clarity with only these 4 frames - but who knows, could be worth exploring! :D
I really do enjoy the step by step in your process. I tend to have a hard time really planning out how I want the animation to flow but seeing someone show their process really helps out in helping refine out my own process in places that I lack. Great video as always~
First of all, Kirby is my favourite retro character, so thank you for exploring this! I really love all the abilities you tried out. And thank you as always for the breakdown on the animation process. I'll definitely be referencing this for my own work. :)
This is a very plausible Kirby. That slime punch both looks like it's a viable mechanic by itself, and that there could be nuclear/acid/poison/slime effects that affect specific enemies and environmental hazards/gates intuitively. Very nicely conceptualized and animated! I also adore little slime snail, really nails the Kirby aesthetic. But without the CRT blur, your inhale Kirby looks... well, he looks like he should get tested for herpes. Something about the colors, and the expression on his face?
Seeing the kirby brainstorming was actually pretty fun. I especially loved seeing the breakdown of the animation and how you prototyped it. It was really educational
Yes, thank you! I've been wanting to make some kirby and the amazing mirror-like sprite, but i couldn't analize the sprites correctly because of my lack of skill in pixelart, this video was amazing to watch!
My dream is to design games, and the process you went through in this video really just made me want to start now! I’m only 13, and I still need a lot more practice, and I’m still learning how to code, but the design process and just the freedom you get when creating games is beautiful.
I will say that your Kirby is well planned out and designed, but one more thing I would recommend is when your designing your Kirby that you try to keep the chibi feel of his original aesthetic. This is a key component in making a Kirby as the focus of most of his transformations isn’t to really change the feel of it, but more so to create an “alternate universe” feel as if Kirby took that characters place. I love the final look and design of Fallout Kirby, and think you did an amazing job, well done!
the construction Kirby was honestly the idea most distinct from existing Copy Abilities in the franchise. wouldn't mind seeing it fleshed out there're already Laser (as you mentioned), Animal, Poison, and Fighter Copy Abilities (the Poison ability even comes from something similar to a snail - it's a slug frog though)
This video is incredible. I love the stylization and voiceover. The content follows a clear workflow that is explained, and it's all presented with a charming style. Super high effort that shows, and I wish all art timelapse/guides on youtube were like this!
Really cool designs I could see these being custom powers in star Allies and how the elements could go with them For a simple case I’ll just say for fire For laser the red eye would be orange and the metal on Kirby’s head would be red. This would make the laser attacks do burning damage For the slime Kirby’s slime hand would be red and burning or the end of the head band could be on fire and the attacks could launch a fire ball The cat could have the ears or tail have a fire or smoke affect and the attacks could have a fire remain on the ground And the construction could have a red wrench on fire and it could maybe bounce and leave fire behind
Imagine "Paper Kirby" but instead of being flat like paper or a 3d papercraft, he's more doing an origami style kind of thing wearing an Origami samurai helmet. not sure what hed do for attacks yet, but the hat would look cute!
yes. this. i didn’t know I needed this, but thank you for giving my life a new purpose... now to make the pink puff boye a metric butt-ton of new copies..... for “science”
I don't know if my idea is very similar to the suplex ability, but i'll say it. I want something like a crane-arm or crab-arm. What makes it different to suplex, is that it doesent throw the enemy to the floor. Crane-arm throws him to left or right. And you can throw the enemy to other enemy! You can get the ability absorbing a new enemy called Handy Armstrong. A cubic robot with shiny colors in the body, nigth vision gogles, and a very long arcade crane as arm. What do you thing? It's funny?
i think that construction worker kirby could possibly be used for some sort of wave defense type thing and you can build with the construction kirby's builds.
The Radio Active Kirby is the coolest but the constructionworker is something which I could imagine in a real kirby game (btw. with the constructionworker helmet he looks kinda like the Mets from Megaman.)
Nintendo character abilitys: Mario: can jump high to stomp on his foes Samus: has an arm cannon to shoot missles and can morph into a ball to get into tight places Kirby: *s u c c*

I think it would have been cool to signify the rotation of Kirby's body by moving his headband stripes back and forth. They're static even though his eyes and mouth rotate around.
I see a random dark pink pixel popping in on a single frame now! :D Looks great. Inhaling frame seems off to me - I think it should be much more exaggerated to work :)
