This prototype just blew my mind when i unpacked it... It really did the job of a prototype since it kind of disqualified the naive idea :) Awesome video and awesome Design Florian!

When you are ready for the next project after the MMX is finished, please don't give up on the ondophone!

It would be very interesting if this was used on the MMX. I wonder how you would be able to move all those things without looking at it.

It was a pleasure to work with you on this Florian! I had the chance to play with it when I was with Martin and you what you did is oustanding, such a level of different skills in one piece is out of this planet. Looking forward to complete the Ondo someday!

Would love to see this instrument sold commercially. It may not have been what Martin wanted, but it would do great as it's own musical instrument.

Here is a way that you could add feedback to the slider, without snapping/locking it into place: add a small vibrating motor (similar to a cell phone or game controller), which is connected to a contact. wherever a virtual "fret" is desired, a metal strip could be placed. This way, when the circuit is closed, the motor would vibrate.
additionally, if continues vibrating is not desired, the contact could be connected to a monostable circuit, which would then drive the motor, to provide a short pulse on an edge of the signal.

I just got some ideas about putting two striker like triggers on the sliding block with tiny triggers. Imagine instead of pressing the block down, you click or press one of the triggers and a small pin or striker or whatever you wanna call it is levered and hits the string. Then if you can have one set for multiple fingers or the thumb, and the block doesn't have to slide up and down to play a note. And if you want tremolo you can press down on the entire block, but the strikers would need to be the right length, so even when the entire block is pushed down, they only play the note of the pressed button. I have ideas and no skills in mocking up said ideas. This is just a fascinating design puzzle. I really just gotta bite the bullet and get my own 3D printer.

I'm having a vision for a similar instrument, but with less mechanics/acoustics: The slider is done using a tensioning belt with a motor on one side. The motor acts both as a sensor for the position as well as an autotune/frets by applying some force (easily configurable). Instead of pressing the whole thing down, you have some Carrera-like joystick in your hand to control the play and the volume and stuff.

It's a musical saw, ok? I've played one too - they're really difficult to play and make it sound nice, but at least it's possible, unlike normal handsaws.

@@fhuable I'm referring to a midi style strip controller (with cv out ideally) that doubles as the fret board. I have no idea if its possible. like the original Ondes having a ring mechanism that gives signals to synth. except this would be a little more grounded within the acoustic sound. add a peizo mic to pick up the string noises to something like a low pass gate or just mix the sound.
