The best break in snooker history, so much out of position with a lot of the shots but the hurricane kept his nerve, top respect for him even though he had his demons, class pure class
The most exciting match ever from the two most exciting players. The speed of their potting and the incredible shots that looked impossibe from different angles. Often, it looked as though Alex or Jimmy was playing a safety shot, only for a red to be rifled into the top pocket at lightning speed. A red, about two feet from the top pocket would be potted at great speed, and the white screwed up the table to be in position for the black. I will never forget the excitement of watching it.
Without a doubt the most impressive televised break ever made. Every one of those shots was played under intense pressure and the first few shots were all very difficult.
I disagree. I thought the pots were great but the actual positioning was shockingly bad. He was out of position frequently. Even played a poor snooker to let White in again.. Anyone else wouldve cleared up from that. If you look at the head to head against jimmy, jimmy won 10 to alexs 4. And most of alex head to heads against top players were similiar. Higgins played too many exhibition type shots in his career to please the crowd and lost many matches because of it

I was lying in bed late at night watching the highlights on a black & white telly with a fuzzy picture. I was left gobsmacked after Alex pulled off this break, and heartbroken when Jimmy went on to lose. I'm not a believer in fate but this one frame seemed to determine how Jimmy's career would go. Especially at the crucible theatre. So near but yet so far. He has to be content with the fact that he was the best player never to have won the world title....
Yes it was the first of many chokes for White. He would surely have beaten Reardon in the final too. Don't forget this was only a week or so after his twentieth birthday. He could have been the youngest ever World Champion, a record which would still have stood today. Even Hendry had to wait until he was twenty-one...
Forget all the 147's. This is the greatest break ever made. It also contains the best shot ever played - the blue into the green pocket. Unless you know about real pressure on a snooker table you wont fully appreciate this.
Jimmy White had a touch of the Ronnie Osullivan's about him flying around the snooker table like that lol, he was a great player when he was playing Jimmy White, shame he never Won a World Championship when he was playing, but what a come back by Alex Higgins under pressure and a frame down I bet Jimmy was cursing that red not dropping in that cost him the match. I remember as a child watching Alex playing snooker on the television in shock at him smoking and drinking as he was on the television lol. Alex Higgin's alway's reminded me of Mick Jagger aswell with his manarizims lol. What a great player Hurrican Higgin's was. What, when jimmy put the first red commentator wasn't happy and when he missed he showed he's support for higgins . Today's commentators can tell exactly what shot the players going for . One thing I like about back then is . You can smoke at least when your favourite player is losing....

U love something so much that when you achieve just a great shot, it warms the heart. Most of the top 16 of back then up to 1993 (which still consisted of most of ths oldies of the 1980's) would have done well to be in the world's top 50 today. Thorne and Meo would only have been top 70 to 80 today the way they were playing way back then.

It was always the key shot that Jimmy always missed. That red on a lead of 59 was what cost him a place in the final. Makes you wonder where Jimmy’s career would’ve gone but for that.
That's because the players had real, individual characters, and you saw who they really were. There was freedom- you could smoke, drink, look at nice girls, be your true self. So much more freedom. That's why it was enjoyable.

Chaotic genius, all over the place! That describes that 69 break and the man himself. Incredible! He didn't get into position until half way through the break! A coach would wince at Alex's cue action, but when that final stroke of the cue makes contact with the cue ball the result is often magical.
Well there were only 5 players in history (Joe Davis, Fred Davis, John Pulman, Ray Reardon, John Spencer) who had won the world title more than Alex at the time he was playing, so I don't think there were many people qualified to coach him!

Obviously taking nothing away from the genius of Alex I honestly feel that if Jimmy hadn't broken down on 41 he probably would've gone on to become World champion that year. A bit like when he bottled it on the black on 17 all against Hendry years later. Crucial errors meant everything!

No doubt a great break under extreme conditions. However, for me this personifies the hurricane. Never able to completely control the cue ball, but had the courage, audacity, and skill to knock in very difficult shots. No matter how good one is, you cannot sustain that kind of play. That was his appeal.

My 2 favourite player's of the 1980s. They were both box office and we're responsible for making snooker attractive and brought in good sponsor's and high prize money. Player's of today should be thankful to Alex and Jimmy for making snooker what it is today.

He's a bottler missed a simple red with the rest. Was ahead in a few of his matches with hendry and bottled them too including a black on the spot
