The diesel Lionel train engines usually have a battery under the shell (a c cell) that powers the horn. You can access this by taking the small screw out at the back end of the engine and then you can lift the plastic body off. The battery area is a key place to look as people usually leave the battery in for years and it corrodes and eats away at the metal. The battery holder is held in by a pop rivet and you can buy a replacement, drill out the pop rivet and then rivet the new holder back in. The corroding battery can do a lot of damage over time so one of the first places I look, when sizing up buying an engine is under the plastic shell.
