      It was the vast amounts of heroin coursing through his bloodstream. If you look very carefully at 0:50, you can even make out the cold, empty "heroin stare" typical of many late-stage addicts. The "dance" is the result of a particularly heady whiff of the opiate. It's tragic, heartbreaking, really.

    My grandmother was a young girl when this came out. She was MAD for Cab Calloway. She was drafted when she was 19 (In Britain, they drafted the girls too, lol), but she did manage to see him live during the war. Cab Calloway was to the 30s and 40s what Prince was to the 80s and 90s. If you don't have a grandma in your life, you might not have known that, lol...

    • @MsCherade9
      @MsCherade9 5 лет назад +39

      @Jesus Christ Yes, they were conscripted here in the UK during WW2. Even The Queen cheerfully took on her service in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. They weren't sent abroad to fight, but they took over all the jobs that the drafted men had done, plus all the war work necessary, the nursing, working the land, working in factories, many for the first time. Just because they weren't sent to the front lines doesn't mean they weren't obligated by law, after being called up, to do the work they were ordered to do.

    for those who for some reason think the actress is white she isn't she is Fredi Washington the woman who played in the first "Imitation Of Life" wow! We're talking about a woman who gave up her whole acting career because execs were trying to force her to pass for white and she didn't want to deny her blackness. Goodness lol she is probably rolling over in her grave right now knowing that she gave all that up and people are calling her white.

      Well I think that what the people who thought she was white were trying to point out is that they were surprised and inspired for the progressive thinking that image would have presented..in a time of such divisiveness in regards to race...it would have reaffirmed the notion that we are all the human race and such interacial divisiveness is a plague of human progression and should be eradicated. ..its great that she stood up for herself and her principles and I applaud her for that and I think most intelligent people would...but she wouldnt be rolling in her grave over the notion of human equality as she has clearly stood up for what is right...this divisive attitude however still permeates in a lot of peoples notions and there is such defensive attitudes on all sides as evident in your response

    • @IamDottieDandridge
      @IamDottieDandridge 9 лет назад +28

      Tommy Brown I'm pretty sure she would she actually gave up her career because they were trying to make her pass as white she didn't want to be white in any way and definitely did not want to deny her blackness and gave up her stardom for it. So the equality speech is nice but let's just call it for what it is and not try to bring civil rights into this.

    • @IamDottieDandridge
      @IamDottieDandridge 9 лет назад +23

      Tommy Brown also you are very correct I am divisive and will be as long as white people are, my race has turned the other cheek while being spat upon way to long why try to be included with people who have always despised you and from the looks of it always will? A person that keeps begging to be accepted by a people that clearly want nothing to do with them are insane. We wanted integration and equality once but whites made their position pretty clear about how they feel about us its on the news everyday in case you haven't been keeping up. Good day!

    Cab Calloway was possibly the most influential artist in the music business. The way his dancing flows with the music, like he's part of it, often reminds me of Dubstep Dancing. And how specifically in this song, how his he makes up words/sounds, effectively becoming almost an instrument himself, is just like beat-boxing! Fascinating, huh!

    A guy from Cab's original band here, said he was a perfectionist and he cared very much about his band's image to the point where, if a guy showed up to rehearsal with a hole in his shirt, Can would stick his finger in the hole and rip the shirt saying "Ain't that a shame. Looks like you need a new shirt." He knew the importance of image. He also held the band mates responsible and accountable for their attendance to practice and shows. He told them he didn't care where they went afterwards but they better be back on time for meetings and soforth.
