I'm learning so much!! I'm going for a test drive on Friday on my first dealetship car. I'm a bit nervous but feel more equiped about what to look for and what not to do.
I absolutely experienced this today, I tried take control and the sales team were getting pissed off because I wasn’t letting me control me. I told the sales manager excuse me let me finish what I want and he was like stunned! My mistake was I shouldn’t have told them that I want to trade in my car initially, the MSRP was $36k but the dealership was increasing my car trade value to reach to out of door price but was never reducing the MSRP. With the value given to me and the equity I put in from my existing car I was paying them $38.5k for a $36k MSRP car. When I questioned that I was told ‘No deal’ by the GM. I walked out, felt insulted a bit but gave a horrible review later.

I'm writing this comment and smiling. I wish I had your fathers help during my car buying time right now. My father sold cars for 20 years. He passed in 2018, and I miss him so much. The way you and your dad are in all your videos remind me so much of how my dad was. He helped me with my car buying processes all the time. I wish I had your dads help! You couldn’t have scripted this any better! I had THE exact experience. I put all my cards out too early, being extra specific about the monthly payment. They almost got me, but I finally came to my senses just as I was about to sign the worst deal ever. I could tell he was pissed!
My dad took the whole family car shopping. He was a payment buyer. When I got my second car from a dealer, I already had my loan pre approved and negotiated the OTD cost. The dealer had a great reputation for customer service and they treated me really well. An expensive repair popped up that was just a few days and a few miles outside of their warranty for used cars and they took care of it and gave me a loaner car. It's been a great car.
I've been riding the wave on the downward slide of car pricing for over a year, waiting patiently till now. With a couple of the tips and suggestions you and your father have made, I've gone into the market. I enjoyed the "What Not To Do" and the "What To Do" videos. Take control, get the out the door number, negotiate off the non-sense add on price gouges and behave in the finance office by rejecting all the add-ons and other move to make a good deal a bad one. These and other videos I've seen over the last year are very helpful.

the only thing i can say as a naive buyer is ask as many combos of down payment and months you can bring them home make your own final price calculations didn't on my previous car did it for the last one the differences was 1500$ between the best and the worst plan
I had a car salesman play dumb with me today and pretend he didn’t know what holdback was. It was a combination look of shock on his face & fear of not knowing how to handle answering it. There was a slight pause on his part and then he asked me “what’s holdback”. So I told him exactly what it was... then he got up no went into his sales managers office. 2 minutes later they both came out & then the sales manager took over. He changed it up and asked me what do I want my monthly payments to be.. I replied, what does that matter? Then I asked him what is the OTD price? They went back to with all the fee’s taxes MV etc it’s all got to be taken into account. Then I said scratch that $479.00 doc fee... it should be about $75.00. Also MV in NJ is about $350.00 & not $500.00. (These fees add up) Then the manager said he can’t do that with the fee’s. Then I said ok I’ll pay the fee’s when you give me an itemized list of what they actually are. Then once paid take those fee’s off the bottom line OTD price... They looked at me like wtf, who taught this guy this stuff.... lol. 2021 Nissan Frontier Midnight Edition they wanted me to pay $36,100.00. My best number so far is $34,500.00 OTD.
Where I live the law says that doc fees are not required but that dealerships have to charge each customer the same fee and it sets a max limit for that fee. What salesmen tend to do is portray it as a mandatory fee at the max level.
Rules for buying 1) don't be emotional 2) be willing to walk away. 3) stay in control of the situation by knowing what your limits are. You are they buyer and control the whole situation. Payment buyers don't control their budgets

Great video!!! Never tell the dealership what you want your payments to be. Stay firm in what you want and be willing to walk away if the numbers don't make sense to you. Of course great credit and putting down 15-20% of the cars OTD price will help with keeping your payments low.
Boy I felt you watching how my purchase went. It was frustrating 4 me to do the deal. The sales kept talking payments and I was what’s OTD price. It was as if the OTD didn’t matter. First sign was the manager said I had the best sales man. Next time I’m asking 4 the worst one!

Thanks a lot for all these videos. I have recently got my driver's license and can't wait to buy my first car. I thought I'll just purchase online and get it delivered easy peasy...lol. But it turns out that buying a vehicle is another test..lol. One thing I learnt is I'm not going alone at a dealership for sure. Preferably go with someone with lot of car buying experience as well as with lot of knowledge about cars. Even if I have to pay someone it would be worth it.
I went through this once, where they thought they got me, and the first thing they did was take the plates off of my trade in before we negotiated. At one point they said "we already got the plates off your car". I said "put them back on". After meeting my goal, I was chastised for not buying the gap insurance or extended warranty.
Here’s a thought: instead of everyone placing games how about the buyer find out how much he wants to pay per month before he goes to the dealership. That will tell you how much you can finance. Get a pre-approval from a bank. Now based on the car you want you know if cash down will be required. Now you can spend your time finding the right car instead of playing stupid games with a salesman. Also, now the OTD is all there is to negotiate. We just bought a used car and that’s what we did and the dealer actually had a better rate than our 2% pre approved rate.

While I still don't think we are negotiating good deals (no dealer has moved their price for us), at least we aren't getting stuck into something we don't want.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that when leasing that "payment buying" is not quite as reckless. I mean if you know the leasing company and its terms, with the monthly payment amount, miles, and lease term, you know the "purchase price" by adding the payments to the residual. It becomes very easy to compare different offers. For instance, you might find 2 different vehicles with different purchase prices that end up being only $1-2 different (Honda CR-V and Honda Accord EX-L as examples).

I prefer to arrange whatever financing i need before i show up at a dealership. That makes it easier to know exactly what I'm paying and to stay focused on the OTD prices. Without the dealership financing the fees are usually where they start playing games. The most annoying thing for me was because floor mats were considered an option it was the only thing i asked for, a sales manager after we agreed on prices, fees and all the rest went out and crossed out floor mats after i initialed it.
Once walked out of a dealership because the sales person wouldn’t tell me the actual price of the car…..would only talk in monthly payments. Went to another dealership…bought top trim of the same car and once I took delivery drove it back to the original dealership and told the owner he lost the sale because of his sales persons actions. He was less than pleased.
I always resist this obsession with knowing what I want my payment to be. Now I know why. Better to redirect that question to, best OIT the door price.

Please, anyone with thoughts on this? My lease was up on V6 challenger. I had been dreaming of big v8 scat pack challenger for years. I've been anticipating this for a while. I had been watching inventory for the last year or so on various local dealers. I knew the package options and everything I wanted I called many dealers and got quotes on the ones I could find. With the "chip shortage" though, no one would budge off the MSRP, save for a $1,500 rebate i got for re-leasing. Since my lease was up, the car is in high demand, and the severe reduction in available inventory, I accepted paying MSRP. All that being said, I dont think MSRP was a bad deal on a vehicle they could easily sell.

LOL. I remember back in the day when I sold cars. A customer came in and said he'd been to another dealer and if I could beat his deal by $50 he'd buy the car from me. I went to my sales manager, explained the terms. I went back to customer, crying b/c I'd been chewed out by the sales manager, but I'd gotten him the $50 better deal.
You guys are great. Enjoy your information. I just wish those paying cash weren’t penalized. It is clear that the price is higher for cash (you have said this prior). Car payments, financed or leased will do nothing but keep people from obtaining independent wealth (generally speaking)

Oh my goodness. If you have cash to buy a car, this is how you do it. 1. Do your online research to know what car you want and generally how much the MSRP is for that car optioned the way you want it. 2. Go to one or two dealerships that have that car and test drive and go through all the bull crap extras (doc fees, etc). 3. Now go to the dealer you want to buy from, near your home where you want to get your service done. 4. Find the car on their lot or know which dealer has it so they can swap for it to get it to their lot. 5. Find a mature salesperson. Older means more experienced and more likely to have sway in the dealership. Someone who can recognize that you know what you’re doing and will understand that you’re serious. 6. Point them at the car you want. You don’t need a test drive, you’ve already test driven at other dealerships. Then tell them you’re going to make them one offer (which will be below their invoice price sufficient to offset all the doc fees and other fees the first two dealers informed you about), and that you will give them exactly one chance to counter offer. If you don’t like the counter offer, you leave, without a single additional word spoken. “Are you ready to hear my offer?” An experienced salesperson will understand what is happening. It’s going to be a cash deal from a buyer who isn’t subject to influence or persuasion, and the price you offer informs him or her that you’ve done your homework in depth. If they ask what you do for a living, because they might assume you’re in the business, tell them you’re a computer scientist. That will instantly give you the upper hand and imply you operate strictly on formulation and logic. You’ll have your car at a fair price that day. If you need to finance, go buy a cheap reliable used car private sale and get a loan from your bank to cover the cost.
Thank you both for the valuable service you’re offering to us all! I was wondering if you may be able to address my situation. I don’t want to spend more than $13k OTD for a used car (based on my desired payment and term length of 48 months). The issue is with my credit unions criteria for cars they’ll finance. They want me to find something 2013 or newer with less than 100k miles. Well, anything I’m interested in that meets that criteria is well over my desired OTD price. Should I consider a longer loan? Should I wait and save up for a larger down payment? I’m driving a can of worms that has a new problem every month so I want to get out of it but avoid getting into another can of worms.
@@HB-ey2dk Yup, so I bought a 2014 Volvo for $16.5k OTD. I put more down to decrease the principal on the loan, and I extended the length to 60 months to make the monthly payments well below my desired cost (48 months would have been right at the threshold of my comfort). I think Ray would have told me to drive that can of worms into the ground! And to that, I say, it crapped out three days after getting my new (to me) car! 😂 In all seriousness, I am delighted with my purchase because my payments are $250/mo with 3.2% interest, and since graduating, I’m able to pay $350 a month and am on track to pay it off in 48 months. I knew my income would increase post-grad, but as a contingency, I went for the longer term, so the monthly payments were a none issue in case the 3rd economic collapse of my life wanted to occur.

Im in the same boat, driving the same bucket for 12 years and my mechanic rolls his eyes at me at this point with the amount of times he sees my car(s). The way you did it sounds smart. I'd prefer having lower payments that way you can toss more on top of it when you can, but aren't strapped each month if you had taken the shorter term. I'm so nervous to go into the dealership because I know I'll likely be taken advantage of, as I'm not as negotiation savvy as I see in these comments (and the sellers market doesn't help).
@@HB-ey2dk oh dude if you have a mechanic take them with you!! I took my cantankerous mechanic with me and he was a DREAM! Was an absolute savage to the salesperson, I constantly had to stop them from fighting and told them they were both doing perfect at their jobs 🤣🤣 I told my mechanic I knew exactly what model and engine I wanted and he ran his computer on 6 Volvo XC60s around town and saved me $$$ on 2 of them by pointing out costly issues. The other 4 were great and didn’t run any codes or present any discernible issues. I honestly hoped he’d tell me they were all bad and to buy a cheaper Toyota, but by the last Volvo, he was actually thinking of buying the next model up for his wife 🤣
@@jjon95 just thought I'd come back and update you if you care for a strangers success story 😂😂 I successfully got a (used) car from a dealership yesterday and I felt like a BADASS while negotiating! I never in a million years would've had the guts to before if RUclipsrs like this didn't exist to pull the veil on the whole dealership/salesman deal. Especially going in as a woman, I knew they'd try to get one over on me and I think I saw a few genuine looks of impress on my salesman and finance managers face (or maybe it's wishful thinking).

In my opinion, you should never admit the maximum [ being accurate to the exact number plus or minus $ 10 ] you would use as a downpayment on a car purchase.
Just found this channel and am interested to see if/how I screwed up. Just drove home a 2020 low mileage (10K) loaner from the dealer I bought my last car from almost 12 years ago. Researched BB on my trade, researched similar used cars - gave them an OTD price (incl TTL) that was $2K below their list ($25K vs $27K). They made it up on the trade-in ($4K) to get me to the OTD price and I paid them cash and drove it home. I'm sure they were glad to get it off their books but it's still got 31 months under warranty and I know it was immaculately maintained for that 10K miles. So I'm feeling pretty good about it.

I had the exact same experience. i ended up walking out over 900$ of profit they didn’t want to give up.

pretty simple. Make the four square box ( total cost of car, apr, monthly payment, and downpayment. NAIL them down on each box to what you want.

Does the loan length really matter if you are going to pay it off in 5 days. I say let them jack it way out and push for a lower total price.

Will you guys do a video on the right way to answer all these questions? Might help to know what you CAN tell a sales person and what you should absolutely keep quiet about- and if you don't want to answer the question- what do you say?
I prefer to arrange whatever financing i need before i show up at a dealership. That makes it easier to know exactly what I'm paying and to stay focused on the OTD prices. Without the dealership financing the fees are usually where they start playing games. The most annoying thing for me was because floor mats were considered an option it was the only thing i asked for, a sales manager after we agreed on prices, fees and all the rest went out and crossed out floor mats after i initialed it.

Once walked out of a dealership because the sales person wouldn’t tell me the actual price of the car…..would only talk in monthly payments. Went to another dealership…bought top trim of the same car and once I took delivery drove it back to the original dealership and told the owner he lost the sale because of his sales persons actions. He was less than pleased.
I always resist this obsession with knowing what I want my payment to be. Now I know why. Better to redirect that question to, best OIT the door price.
reminder on the math: the lower the total price of the vehicle the lower the payments will be.
But the LONGER the payment term is, ie. 7yrs vs. 5yrs also provides lower payments. People get lulled into this "low payment plan". But not good!

My lease was up on V6 challenger. I had been dreaming of big v8 scat pack challenger for years.
I've been anticipating this for a while. I had been watching inventory for the last year or so on various local dealers. I knew the package options and everything I wanted
I called many dealers and got quotes on the ones I could find.
With the "chip shortage" though, no one would budge off the MSRP, save for a $1,500 rebate i got for re-leasing.
Since my lease was up, the car is in high demand, and the severe reduction in available inventory, I accepted paying MSRP.
All that being said, I dont think MSRP was a bad deal on a vehicle they could easily sell.
Getting ready to purchase a 2021 Hyundai Sonata and this is magic.

LOL. I remember back in the day when I sold cars. A customer came in and said he'd been to another dealer and if I could beat his deal by $50 he'd buy the car from me.
I went to my sales manager, explained the terms. I went back to customer, crying b/c I'd been chewed out by the sales manager, but I'd gotten him the $50 better deal.

You guys are great. Enjoy your information. I just wish those paying cash weren’t penalized. It is clear that the price is higher for cash (you have said this prior). Car payments, financed or leased will do nothing but keep people from obtaining independent wealth (generally speaking)

Payment is not relevant. The total car cost is the only important figure.
This is really a great teaching method guys, I love these examples.
Oh my goodness. If you have cash to buy a car, this is how you do it.
1. Do your online research to know what car you want and generally how much the MSRP is for that car optioned the way you want it.
2. Go to one or two dealerships that have that car and test drive and go through all the bull crap extras (doc fees, etc).
3. Now go to the dealer you want to buy from, near your home where you want to get your service done.
4. Find the car on their lot or know which dealer has it so they can swap for it to get it to their lot.
5. Find a mature salesperson. Older means more experienced and more likely to have sway in the dealership. Someone who can recognize that you know what you’re doing and will understand that you’re serious.
6. Point them at the car you want. You don’t need a test drive, you’ve already test driven at other dealerships. Then tell them you’re going to make them one offer (which will be below their invoice price sufficient to offset all the doc fees and other fees the first two dealers informed you about), and that you will give them exactly one chance to counter offer. If you don’t like the counter offer, you leave, without a single additional word spoken.
“Are you ready to hear my offer?”
An experienced salesperson will understand what is happening. It’s going to be a cash deal from a buyer who isn’t subject to influence or persuasion, and the price you offer informs him or her that you’ve done your homework in depth. If they ask what you do for a living, because they might assume you’re in the business, tell them you’re a computer scientist. That will instantly give you the upper hand and imply you operate strictly on formulation and logic. You’ll have your car at a fair price that day.
If you need to finance, go buy a cheap reliable used car private sale and get a loan from your bank to cover the cost.

Thank you both for the valuable service you’re offering to us all! I was wondering if you may be able to address my situation. I don’t want to spend more than $13k OTD for a used car (based on my desired payment and term length of 48 months). The issue is with my credit unions criteria for cars they’ll finance. They want me to find something 2013 or newer with less than 100k miles. Well, anything I’m interested in that meets that criteria is well over my desired OTD price. Should I consider a longer loan? Should I wait and save up for a larger down payment? I’m driving a can of worms that has a new problem every month so I want to get out of it but avoid getting into another can of worms.

@@HB-ey2dk Yup, so I bought a 2014 Volvo for $16.5k OTD. I put more down to decrease the principal on the loan, and I extended the length to 60 months to make the monthly payments well below my desired cost (48 months would have been right at the threshold of my comfort).
I think Ray would have told me to drive that can of worms into the ground! And to that, I say, it crapped out three days after getting my new (to me) car! 😂 In all seriousness, I am delighted with my purchase because my payments are $250/mo with 3.2% interest, and since graduating, I’m able to pay $350 a month and am on track to pay it off in 48 months. I knew my income would increase post-grad, but as a contingency, I went for the longer term, so the monthly payments were a none issue in case the 3rd economic collapse of my life wanted to occur.

The way you did it sounds smart. I'd prefer having lower payments that way you can toss more on top of it when you can, but aren't strapped each month if you had taken the shorter term.
I'm so nervous to go into the dealership because I know I'll likely be taken advantage of, as I'm not as negotiation savvy as I see in these comments (and the sellers market doesn't help).
@@HB-ey2dk oh dude if you have a mechanic take them with you!! I took my cantankerous mechanic with me and he was a DREAM! Was an absolute savage to the salesperson, I constantly had to stop them from fighting and told them they were both doing perfect at their jobs 🤣🤣
I told my mechanic I knew exactly what model and engine I wanted and he ran his computer on 6 Volvo XC60s around town and saved me $$$ on 2 of them by pointing out costly issues. The other 4 were great and didn’t run any codes or present any discernible issues. I honestly hoped he’d tell me they were all bad and to buy a cheaper Toyota, but by the last Volvo, he was actually thinking of buying the next model up for his wife 🤣
@@jjon95 just thought I'd come back and update you if you care for a strangers success story 😂😂 I successfully got a (used) car from a dealership yesterday and I felt like a BADASS while negotiating! I never in a million years would've had the guts to before if RUclipsrs like this didn't exist to pull the veil on the whole dealership/salesman deal.
Especially going in as a woman, I knew they'd try to get one over on me and I think I saw a few genuine looks of impress on my salesman and finance managers face (or maybe it's wishful thinking).

In my opinion, you should never admit the maximum [ being accurate to the exact number plus or minus $ 10 ] you would use as a downpayment on a car purchase.

Just found this channel and am interested to see if/how I screwed up. Just drove home a 2020 low mileage (10K) loaner from the dealer I bought my last car from almost 12 years ago. Researched BB on my trade, researched similar used cars - gave them an OTD price (incl TTL) that was $2K below their list ($25K vs $27K). They made it up on the trade-in ($4K) to get me to the OTD price and I paid them cash and drove it home. I'm sure they were glad to get it off their books but it's still got 31 months under warranty and I know it was immaculately maintained for that 10K miles. So I'm feeling pretty good about it.
