    After doing research and now knowing that Sagittarius is not the only half man half horse that shines bright in the night skies.

    I got my first real good look at Crux and Centaurus at Seminyak Beach in Bali which is at around 5 degrees south latitude. I have since been back to Bali one more time, and it is wonderful to see those Constellations, they are quite exciting as you say.

    I'm loving your work on the constellations. I've been seeing the sky since I was a teenager and I'm always moved.
    But just to color your work more I would like to add that the bison man (or bull man) is indeed related to the Sun God Shamash (his name in early Mesopotamian mythology was Utu) because he was a Sukkal (an attendant of the court of Shamash, an envoy). BUT, his real name was Kusarikku (or GUD-ALIM, bull-man/bison).
    He is represented by a mountain from which the Sun (the Sun God, shamash) rises. It is referred to in an incantation to make a child stop crying, as well as to protect against evil spirits.
    Very interesting, isn't it?!

      Thank you for sharing your story. I'm always fascinated to learn about mythologies since it the is subject I know the least about as a scientist/teacher.

    At 32º Latitude I can only see part of Centaurus, but C80 or Omega Centauri is visible and rises to 10º above the horizon and can be viewed with binoculars or a telescope. It is impressive when a rain clears the sky of dust and the sky is clear. I use a wide angle eyepiece at 65x magnification and just above it is Centaurus A galaxy. Also called C77 and it emits a relativistic jet from its massive black hole. At a 7th magnitude it is visible with binoculars and a telescope, but don't expect to see much without long exposure photography. It rises higher than C80, but both drop below the horizon in July.

    Im actually surprised since you said other stars don't stand out when 6 stars are of 2nd magnitude or brighter
    It's actually easy to see the constellation especially when crux is barely above the horizon at its peak where i live since it's 24°N
    But this helped me farther

    You can see Alpha Centauri at +29 north latitude in May. It's interesting that the max latitude listed isn't really accurate and you can actually see everything about 5 degrees higher (or lower if in the negative degrees) than what's actually stated.
    I can see the top of the constellation Ara the altar in NW Louisiana at around +31 degrees north latitude even though the IAU says +25 to -90.
    Maybe that's just an average and not exact that the IAU uses.

    Too far south for me sadly although I think that the top clips the southern horizon but I use to live in South Africa so I know it fairly well.I have seen it from a few northern hemisphere nations; Belize,Oman, Guatemala, Jordan and El Salvador.

    I'm surprised to hear you say that most of the stars don't stand out, I'm still very much learning the night sky but this constellation is one I can picture quite well, perhaps I couldn't point out the exact stars, but the general figure of a centaur throwing a spear is something I feel I can picture quite easily while looking at it
    I actually found this video wondering if there was an ancient story of centaurus throwing a spear at lupus, perhaps they don't have any connection at all

      @learnthesky  2 года назад

      I have no found a mythology yet about Centaurus throwing a spear at Lupus, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I am often overwhelmed by the enormous amount of mythologies that exist on the stars. It is always a challenge to decide what mythology I should include in a video.

    Very interesting. Let me ask a question. Which month will be an ideal condition to view proxima centauri for people who lives 20 to 25 degree North latitude in a geographical coordinates?

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  7 месяцев назад

      It is best seen in March, April and May. It will be low on the horizon from that latitude.

    Why Centaurus looks like attacking Lupus? Is there any mythology?

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  3 года назад

      I haven’t found anything yet about lupus and Centaurus. The mythologies can be challenging to discover because there are just so many. Where to start?

    so living in nevada i cant see alpha centauri ?

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 2 года назад

      If in southern NV you can see part of Centaurus and it is most visible in May. I live in Southern NM and can see parts of Centaurus now in April, but the main bright stars never rise above the horizon.
      It is 0430 on April 15, 2022. I have to go setup my 100mm or 4 inch reflector to watch the line up of Saturn, Mars, Venus and Jupiter. They will be lining up for the next few weeks. Another cool thing is that Mercury will be visible for an hour or so right after sunset. Spring is a good season to stargaze.
