I just randomly came across the video on RUclips. I've been in love with Monoceros since I was a little kid.....39ish years ago. It is such an underrated constellation with so much to explore. It really does deserve more attention/credit.
0:56 I think "Monoceros" is Greek. The Latin word would be "unicornis", which is also the origin of the English word. Anyways, thank you for your videos! It is so nice to see a fellow astronomer share their passion about the night sky. Your videos also help me learn the english pronunciation of astronomical objects, stars and constellations. Greetings from 51°N 10°E!
sweet Unicorn information 😎 My opinion if you sip on some Martha Stewart Chardonnay Wine after a while Monoceros looks more like a Rhinoceros 🤣 thank you.
Awesome. And this one has many different celestial objects. Ngc 2264 represents many celestial objects, including Christmas Tree , so merry Christmas! Janine 😜 i’ve emailed you i hope you open it on time. Seeya
It resembles a rhinoceros though, and at the time, Greek asttology / astronomy depicted real animals. Or at some level. So I read. Actually this constellatiton was recorded by Ptolemy so I'm confused you atttribute it to a Dutch star mapper. Fact checked myself, i was wrong.
Not to my knowledge. I am still trying to find more info on this constellation. I did read that French Scholar Joseph Scaliger found evidence of Monoceros on an ancient Persian planisphere, however I’m still trying to find a primary source on this.

I totally agree. I only learned about this constellation a couple of years back. The Rosette Nebula is my favorite in this constellation!
Another obscure constellation brought to clarity by Janine. Look forward to exploring the Rosette Nebula and other deep sky wonders in Monoceros!

Did Plancius associate it with any particular myth?
