      In your opinion Slavens, I’d really like a KTM or Husky 300 for a dual sport. Not for hundreds of miles on the freeway but 50 or 60 MPH on the backroads for 50 or 60 miles at a time.. your thoughts?

    Dont need to relocate your injectors to go PreMix
    Just retime (remap) your injectors to 5 or 10 degrees after BDC.
    Those injectors have a long narrow stream that will reach down into the crank case as long as they down have an opposing airstream.

      You must be bored. Get out your bike and get some throttle therapy.

  • @onthethrottle7104
    @onthethrottle7104 2 года назад

    Totally agree with you Jeff on the wrap around hand guards, those things are dangerous. Once you get out of wack hitting some whoops while standing up, your hand comes off the bar, arm goes through and gets caught in-between, and all things bad happen. Guys, don't run those stupid things. Sweet bike, surprised you don't have high end upper alum triple clamp.

    • @sage1wt
      @sage1wt 2 года назад

      Have you heard of anyone breaking their arm or hand with the wrap around hand guards?

    • @slaverace1
      @slaverace1  2 года назад

      I do have the Luxon upper triple clamp but it only has 2 handlebar positions so I'm using the O.E.M. upper clamp until the 4 position clamp arrives. I think I explained that in the video but maybe I forgot.

    • @ride200mi
      @ride200mi 2 года назад

      Never had a problem with full wrap arounds. I have had my fingers broken in a Hare Scrables race useing just the flag type guards hitting a tree.

    • @onthethrottle7104
      @onthethrottle7104 2 года назад +2

      @@ride200mi I was riding with a pro rider and he lost control hitting heavy whoops, long story short his arm got caught in side between the wrap around guard on the right side and when it was all said and done he broke his back, fractured six ribs and collapsed a lung. He was even saying during his crash he could not get control of the bike and when he was pulling out his arm it wiskied the throttle which made things even worse. It was a crazy crash let me tell you. I removed my wrap arounds and never went back. And yes, I have heard of guys breaking their wrists with wrap arounds mostly not so much arms.

    Is there a reason for choosing the rekluse 3.0 vs the radius cx, I'm guessing maybe cx won't fit behind thst clutch cover? and what are your thoughts on steering stabilizer for this bike? Thanks Jeff! Awesome build.

    I've been seeing some videos from "The Dirtbike Rider" and comments in other youtube videos about the pistons catastrophically failing on many of these '23 TPI's. Having just picked up one of these I'm naturally a bit concerned. Jeff, have you heard of or seen this particular year of bike fail more than previous models and do you have any insight as to why this could be happening? The Dirtbike Rider theorizes that this is a result of KTM switching the cylinder manufacture from Elko to another brand as well as using cheaper pistons. Others say it's a bad batch of pistons. My '23 has an Elko cylinder but I won't know what piston I have until I pull the head. I'm wondering if I just put on a new Vertex piston for the peace of mind. I always value Jeff's opinions on these matters so I'd appreciate any ideas.

    • @slaverace1
      @slaverace1  Год назад +1

      Hello Josh:
      As far as I know (I could be wrong) only one guy posted a pic of a blown up motor and he gave no further details. Ends up, his bike is a `23 XCW, not XC. Like the internet does all too often, everyone freaked out and re-posted it everywhere.
      Other than a defective piston that I have not seen in 50+ years, pistons only fail (not seizures) when they have too much cylinder to piston clearance or repeated or prolonged over-revving as in a crash where the throttle is stuck wide open. Pistons get beyond acceptable cylinder to piston clearance specs on high mileage engines or when dirt is ingested. The excess clearance causes the piston to eventually crack and then complete failure which also takes out the connecting rod, rod bearing and main bearings.
      The bore and stroke of engines define the piston speed limitations and failure points. KTM 300s have what's called a square bore and stroke (72mmX72mm) and that design is not intended to be run at sustained high RPMs because the piston speeds exceed acceptable levels. If guys consistently over-rev the engine the piston will eventually crack and fail. Excessive clearance and over-revving are consumer created failures, not a KTM issue. Constant over-revving is not common among trail riders but does happen with track riders/racers.
      I'll try to find time to write a white paper or make a video with the equation for calculating the failure point.
      The `23 XCs have an excellent engine and use the exact same Vertex piston as the TPi models, same part number. Piston failures are almost always a consumer issue.
      Happy trails,
      JS

    • @joshorintas4602
      @joshorintas4602 Год назад +1

      Thanks, Jeff, for the detailed explanation. It definitely puts my mind at ease. I’ve gone back and viewed the piston failure video and he does exactly as you explained should not be done . He does three steep hill climbs in a row basically at WOT for the entirety of the climb. The third (which mysteriously was not recorded) is when he claims the piston failed. This is something that we trail riders do not do and, as explained, these bikes weren’t built to do.
      I will say I’m coming off a ‘19 xcw tpi with a modified head and GET race kit and it was the best bike I’ve ever run. I’m hoping this ‘23 will meet or exceed that experience. I guess I should stop reading into the negative banter about these bikes and keep enjoying the ride!

    • @slaverace1
      @slaverace1  2 года назад +1

      A well tuned TPi works very well. Relocating the injectors gives a mild improvement and it will also have a much better throttle body. I'm all for eliminating the oil pump. It's just more stuff (weight) and a potential failure point. I prefer to keep things simple.

    Jeff watched this a second time, and I'm wondering why you removed the thermostat when you installed the new hoses? Doesn't the engine run too cold without it? I'm confused, I thought the TPI's always needed the thermostat.

    • @slaverace1
      @slaverace1  2 года назад

      Hello Mike: TPI's do not need or require a thermostat which only makes the engine warm up quicker and does not effect the operating temp.
