I know the owner personally! That car is literally a block away from my mothers house.. sitting in that exact same spot in his shop to this day. The Owners name is Cliff and he is a racing legend. I go talk to him from time to time and I still remember the first time I seen the car and we started talking about it. Chevrolet gave him the car for promoting purposes because he was well known. I still remember moving a bunch of old car parts out of the way just to look around the car and sit in the drivers seat. He said I was probably the first person to have sat in it in 30 years.. it’s one awesome car.. and yes I’ve heard he owns the Only Z16 that’s still In the original owners name!!
That’s amazing!! Do you know if the car would still run if given an oil change/fresh fuel, plugs, points etc? Or was there an issue with it that caused him to park it in 71? That thing is such a time capsule and I’m like you, I would get as much enjoyment from sitting behind the wheel of that car for 5 minutes that I would out driving it around! Well not really, but you know what I mean. I’ll never have the opportunity to drive an original beast like that so just sitting behind the wheel will always make me happy!! It’s absolutely gorgeous tho!! Cliff is an extremely lucky man to be given the opportunity to be the caretaker of it for the past 56 years!
I remember , the shop was north of town by the Drive in Theater . His Mom was a School teacher Had a class with her at AC. Remember Him like it was Yesterday .
I just rescued a survivor 1966 Elcamino, 2nd owner and 75k orig miles. It was last titled in 1983 and title included. I can't wait to get it going again.
BW there’s a guy in a Chevelle group I’m in on Facebook and his has a harder to find option on his like AC or something like that I can’t remember exactly what it was
What a shame such a valuable car is just sitting collecting dust...it deserves to be cleaned up, tuned up, fluids refreshed, and should become road worthy, even if just to show! So many people would enjoy seeing it at a classic/muscle car show!!!
@@ronlind1757 you should see the Corvettes in his shop being used as storage units and work benches. Cliff has forgotten more than most any of us will ever know about cars.
@@bencox1160 Well, maybe we don't know as much as old cliff but I sure as hell wouldn't forget to take great care of such a rare car. Seeing it like that is just sad. What in life could be more important than this machine? It apparently is enough for him to be able to say he has the only one still in the original owner's name. Too bad it's probably the worst cared for !!!
awesome ! always salivated over the Z16 since I was 15 in 1979...I bought a crocus yellow 65 327 4sp 12 bolt at the age of 15 and kept it till I was 19 ...for a 14 year old car then it had been trashed but very restorable ...I hot rodded it and sold it to a friend and it became a race car and still is to this day !... I now own a 64 327 4sp car ... thanks for sharing
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. In the fall of 1966 I bought a SS 396 Chevelle L 78 375 special 4 sp Muncie Black top Marina Blue while attending college n N Detroit. It was special because the engine was upgraded by GM for the Tallendega series. The owner got it thru a Gm lottery but had to sell because of the GM strike year before. As soon as I got it changed the carbs, milled heads, exhaust, n heavier dual pos rear end bigger tires. The mechanic where I worked PT was a member of Roger Lindenmudes Color Me Gone Chrysler team and helped with the engine work. Dynoed to 420 hp. Loved that car...lol..n man could she fly. Won a ton of $ racing the street n Eway..and cruzin Woodward Ave..Lost it in a car wreck n an ice storm in 69' Sad day even now thinkin about it 50 yrs later.
WOW this is a great roll back in time with all of great people responding with comments.!! I think I have read at this time all of the 354 !! Bringing back a lot of memories from the neighborhood I grew up in ! I am 66 years old now
This video (as well as this entire channel) is a treasure trove of information and is just beyond interesting to those of us that consider this type of stuff to be akin to archeological finds. Patrick, you are not only a scholar, archeologist, historian and videographer......you are an important asset to the automotive world, and those of us that understand the importance of what you do, truly appreciate your professionalism and the thorough presentations of your finds. Keep up the great work.
I know this car! I worked For Clif when we raced the #89 67 Corvette that Mecum now owns. I was trying to remember but I think we ran 200 MPH at Dayton with the Chevelle.
Great video Patrick, had one of these in my small southern Illinois home town, red with black vinyl top beautiful car, I think it had a modified rear suspension from the factory, maybe control arms and sway bar were different, and I think most had a 3:35 gear with open rear end which is strange, again a verry cool and rare car, keep up the great work!
I watch a few of your video's every day. I enjoy them immensely. I had a 1964 Chevelle, Malibu SS. I bought it back in 1988 for $1500. The car was immaculate, two owner car. 283, two speed powerglide, with A/C. White with sliver/blue interior. I'm seriously considering another one, maybe a convertible with a 4 speed this time. Looking forward to future videos
My buddy bought a 65 malibu when he was a senior and we built a 327 365hp, 4sp muncie and 410 rear. That was around 1984! Lol Redid the body and sprayed it a maroon metal flake. Had alot of fun ripping around racing all the locals! Video brings back some awesome memories! Nice!
my brother bought a red 65 impala with 325 hp 396 and a four speed. he was in the airforce and drove it from maryland to alaska towing a 56 chevy for his buddy. it had no get up and go because it didn't have the big cam and solid lifters. still a nice car though. i'd like to have it now. when he came home from alaska he bought a 67, 327 camaro and did some cam, head and intake changing so it would run. we had nice toys back in the day. you check them out every day and do an awesome job. wish i could get out and do it. what a great way to have fun. nothing better than finding those treasures. thank you
Now that’s a true survivor car there!! It’s just such a thing SS beauty looking under the hood and seeing nothing but a big block, a battery, a couple heater hoses and a radiator!! And it’s not covered with a flat piece of gray plastic that says “engine under here”
I had read some where may hot rod magazine that there where 201 made. Very awesome video I've talked to lots car guys that have never heard of the Z16. Thank you
This is the real deal! These were built on a convertible frames. Bunky Knudsen was the executive that launched this project. Fantastic find. Thanks for posting.
The plant is in Kansas City Kansas.Fairfax district is on the Kansas side.Love the way you conduct your shows though and I am a die hard Chevy fan. I had a 71 Chevelle in the early 80s when you could find them every where.Like so many of us I regret ever selling it.
We had a red '65 Malibu SS Convertible, but was a 327, 4bl, dual exhaust, stock bucket seats with factory console tachometer, tilt wheel PS, PB and factory floor shift automatic. We put a set of Keystone Klassic mags on it with Goodyears all the way around (while keeping the rare factory black/chrome SS wheelcovers safely stowed in the trunk. We bought it from a banker in Spokane WA and it later ended up in Wenatchee WA in the mid 1980s. Very tight and dependable good running car. ;-)
In 1972 I lived in Westminster, California and we had a neighbor who had one in Regal Red Z16 original. We lived near Magnolia and Newland. My neighborhood buddies and I would drive by the house and if the garage door was open we would just stop and stare at that bad boy. Even back then we knew exactly what it was and 1 of 200. wow! This is the only other one I have seen. Thanks for the vid!
Years ago I was at a World of Wheels here in Atlanta. The Dan Blocker Z16 was there. I’d never seen one. Let’s say that I was very enthusiastic. The owner “do you want to sit in the car”? Not sure if made motor sounds as I pretended to drive it. A real treat for me. There were two Z16s at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee this year (‘21), $$$
Take My breath away I was born April 15th 1971 this is one of the cars that I have dreamed of my whole life you don't see this very rarely when I was a child I actually got to ride in one myself
I remember a mechanic at a AMC dealership in Hatboro Pa had a black one. This was in 1966 I had just purchased a 1966 Chevelle myself but this car was the Holy Grail at the time.
Patrick, Back in 1965 I was going to buy a 65 Chevelle in Sacramento dealer. It was dark blue, dark and light blue seats, 396, 375 hp.Dealer install Craiger wheels. Price on sticker was 3,290 dollars. I asked the sales person about the engine I had never heard of before. I am a car and engine guy. Started Drag racing in 1959. Since then I have only seen one other that was yellow. Tried to buy that one in 1984. Never seen one since.
This light of a car with that horsepower,, meant hang on and hope for the best!!! You have to remember, drum brakes, no power steering, bias ply tires!!! It was a beast that would kill you in a heartbeat!!!
If he’s right about who got these because they had the means to market them, the owner probably thought why not leave it on there as he was going from show to show. Who knows really... Cool car though!
Thank you,I said the same,NO normal person would drive 68k with the window sticker, just raises a flag for me about the whole story.nice car for sure but sumthin aint quite right
I was lucky to see one in my hometown. It had the 327 four speed and was red in color with around 20,000 original miles. The owner passed away of cancer as a young man. His parents kept the car in an enclosed garage on jack stands for years. It was a graduation gift to him. Don’t know where the car finally ended up. It was beautiful but came with a sad memory. Same hub caps and black interior. I’ll never forget it.
I drive my 64 SS convertible. Not a z16 but a rare car and a trophy winner. I beat the living shit out of it. When I got it all it was was a frame and s body and I busted my ass rebuilding it and I love driving it.
The more rare the car, the more it's worth. Only a fool would buy and DRIVE a car like this on a daily basis. Much too valuable and rare!! Then some moron with a cell phone would rear end or T-bone it because he wasn't paying attention! Then what?? Ya, sure......restore it with a "reconstructed" title and see what it's worth!!
My uncle once owned a 64 Chevelle Malibu SS 327 convertible. It was that regal red. Sweet car, his had those 14 inch SS wheel covers which have a big die cast spinner with SS on them.
Back in the early 80s I bought one in Corpus Christi that was corroded almost in two. Really abused, had a small block in it. I parted it out but kept the trans and rear axle. Those goodies got used in my first "four door Chevelle cut apart and made into a two door" car that was really an engine stand for a blown tall-deck 496 I built in late 80s. "Blown Big Block in Small A-Body = PRICELSS", LOL . . .
It's a wonder how some of the guys that bought them new, then the gas crunch in the 70's, didn't let go and just hung on to em, and are now being offered big bucks and still say no,. Hail to the survivor savours. My father in law is one of em. He is a great guy.
Saw a red 65 SS 396 once in Phoenix in 1985 as it was driving out of a parking lot. I assume it was an original z16 but didn’t speak with the driver as the car was rolling when I saw it. It was magnificent!
well atleast it's indoors out of the elements, otherwise that's a hell of a way to treat a lovely rare beauty. just love seeing that big block under the hood of anything! but treating it like that, smh,she deserves much better than that treatment imo.thanks again. ☆☆☆
To me either the 65 Malibu SS396 Z16 or the 69 COPO 427 Chevelle is the Holy Grail of big block Chevelle's...not the 70 LS6. Awesome find. Super rare car still complete and in really solid restorable condition. I'd just clean it up good and get it roadworthy and drive it just like that
I saw one of these in '65 in Harrisburg PA. It was a head-turner because it's really a different look for a Chevelle. But I recall my sighting having a vinyl top - correct?
My brother who has passed away now bought a brand new 64 SS had a 283 in it Drove it over 200,000 miles. Then got a new short block and a valve job on heads. Drove it to 286,000 then sold it for 200 dollars to a kid for his first car
Ah, Patrick, that explains it! Though it seams like you upped the volume for your recent '69 Charger video in New Mexico with the two pit bulls. I guess sometimes there's some shouting on cover missions. Any chance you can read the tags on the Mopars? Tag-reading is definitely your forte. Or is that a whole different thing than the Chevelles? I Like your channel. Subbed.
Your shows are very knowledgeable & the best part is we never know what your going to find next. That 67 SS/RS 350 that was originally red now gold was a diamond in the rough. One thing that definitely isn't easy to miss is that its badges state Malibu SS but from 66 and on were Chevelle Super Sports correct? Or was there a panel above glove box that said Malibu in script in the 66 and 67 SS versions?
PGN, funny fact. John Rassori Jr. had a 283 that Cliff built in his 67 Camaro that that ended up being "Purple Haze" when he sold it to Newton. But when Rassori ran that 283 it was one of the fastest cars in Clarksville. Only pushed like 370hp but over 450lbs of torque, with that Nash 5 speed and 4:56 rear end. Definatly an 1/8th mile car.
Saul Goodman Cliff Gottlob of Kansas the owner of this Z16 Chevelle built the engine in the Clarksville TN 67 Camaro “Purple Haze” ???? No way! Really???
Patrick Glenn Nichols Musclecar Barn Finds - I was an “intern” for Cliff from ‘90-92 while getting my Auto Technology degree at the local college. That’s way back when his Vette race car was new. Every couple months I would offer $1,000 to take the Chevelle off his hands. 😂 He would always chuckle and shake his head. Honestly, that car could be worth $10 million and I don’t think he would take it. It’s not about the money. He probably told you about his L88 Corvette. I think that experience is why this Chevelle will never be sold as long as Cliff has a heart beat. Someone needs to chronicle all his stories while he’s still with us. I also hope someone takes the time to sort through all the piled up paperwork and documents. There are some historic gems hidden there too!
Chevrolet sponsored Bonanza for years...and cast did western town parade commercials with Bewitched cast members...and Man From Uncle. Hoss got the one he drove in commercials in 1965.
Kevin N yes he most certainly did one article I read on it back a few months after they came out I was 15 years old at the time and quite a Gearhead was that he slept on the couch at the showroom floor so they could get the paperwork done for him to drive it off the next day that's what the article said no magazine looking back I couldn't tell you which magazine I read that out of but I do remember reading it and the original articles back in the day said there was 201 one of them being a convertible which the article said seems to be lost in action
Very cool! I have a 66 el camino factory l79 and would like to know where the build sheets were placed on those cars built in Fremont CA? Let me know if you do please. Thanks!
Randy that was the worst of the worst plants you will find most cars made at the Fremont plant were warranty prone I heard of tabby bolts being left out and vibrations etc shit plant it only was around 15 model years and got axted
My good friend Fred here in Beltsville Maryland bought Malcolm Durham's Z-16 Chevelle in the mid-1970s for $250.00 at a Shell Gas Station minus the engine and transmission, Malcolm had painted the car blue to match the Altered Wheelbase 65 Chevelle Drag Car, Fred went through the trouble and bought a date-coated engine and four-speed transmission, The car came with the multiplex radio, with the clock mounted on the dash and a cup and the tack mounded in the dash, Fred even went through the trouble to find NOS fenders ,Door shells and Quarter panels, A few years later his brother Charlie who worked at Rockville GM a Maryland General Motors Parts yard specializing in GM parts cars bought another Z-16, That was the ex Race car with the rear wheel openings cut up for drag slicks and it had a roll bar welded into it, But inside the trunk was the original air cleaner lid with the 396/375 emblem attached to it which he gave his brother, That Z-16 got restored It was re-bodied, I saw the show later painted red to match the one in the video, I haven't seen it since, Many times Malcolm Durham and one of his old friends would come by Fred lot From Hyattsville from his Supercar Engineering Shop and ask if the car was for sale, But he didn't want to pay any money for it, The car was sold at Fall Carlisle either last year or the year before with all the parts included just under a $100, 000.00.

If he’s right about who got these because they had the means to market them, the owner probably thought why not leave it on there as he was going from show to show. Who knows really... Cool car though!
Having a hard time believing that someone had a car like this and didn't drive it for so long
Thank you,I said the same,NO normal person would drive 68k with the window sticker, just raises a flag for me about the whole story.nice car for sure but sumthin aint quite right
@@nextphase5854 then you didn’t listen to the story then! It’s not hard to understand at all
wow ,what a find ,what dreams are made of
Nice Job...
Best find ever, my opinion!
A 64 is my dream car. There are only two cars I will buy before I die, a 64 is one of them 😍😍
What a find!
Amazing.
Wow, what a find. I would love to own that car. Dan Blocker "Hoss" from Bonanza had a yellow one.
Not a z16 with a small block in it
All Z16s Had The 396, None had anything else!
Wow, I think I'd show the car as is without even washing it. There aren't many barn finds in that condition.
Even after they restore these cars nobody actually drives them. Pretty much useless at that point. It's a freaking car DRIVE IT!
I think all the folks that own these cars are poor or in a wheelchair
Agreed, drive the sumbitch
@@USCG.BrennanI'd rather get killed/maimed in a Chevelle than a Toyota
My uncle once owned a 64 Chevelle Malibu SS 327 convertible. It was that regal red. Sweet car, his had those 14 inch SS wheel covers which have a big die cast spinner with SS on them.
Back in the early 80s I bought one in Corpus Christi that was corroded almost in two. Really abused, had a small block in it. I parted it out but kept the trans and rear axle. Those goodies got used in my first "four door Chevelle cut apart and made into a two door" car that was really an engine stand for a blown tall-deck 496 I built in late 80s.
"Blown Big Block in Small A-Body = PRICELSS", LOL . . .
Looks like my 283/2spd auto 65 red over red bucket seat console SS I loved that car
Wash and detail and that car would look outstanding.
Holy grail.
Thank you.
That is unreal! WOW!
It's a wonder how some of the guys that bought them new, then the gas crunch in the 70's, didn't let go and just hung on to em, and are now being offered big bucks and still say no,. Hail to the survivor savours. My father in law is one of em. He is a great guy.
That's my dream car
Saw a red 65 SS 396 once in Phoenix in 1985 as it was driving out of a parking lot. I assume it was an original z16 but didn’t speak with the driver as the car was rolling when I saw it. It was magnificent!
What a time capsule,I hope she doesn't rot away.
Great car...thanks for showing. I understand the storing of these cars but can't they at least keep them clean and covered?
I'd love to just Clean that thing up, bring back the paint...etc.
This guy spends a lot of time on small details should spend more time showing the magnificent body and interior
That's great response I'd like to clean up my own drool peace Toby
Bow Ties
Awesome car Chevelle
Holy Grail find.
Oh Lort!!!!.....a Z16 ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Great video as always Patrick I thought there were 201 z16s maid the 1 being a convertible
Holy Grail 🤯
Why do you speak so softly? Are you afraid you will wake up the 396.
offplanetevent hahahahaha!
I like the soft tone. It feels like I’m there in the barn. So much better than some loud dude yelling “what up you tuber!” Lol
LMFAO
Another vehicle not maintained , doesn't cost anything to put air in the tires
Church of the holy roller
well atleast it's indoors out of the elements, otherwise that's a hell of a way to treat a lovely rare beauty. just love seeing that big block under the hood of anything! but treating it like that, smh,she deserves much better than that treatment imo.thanks again.
Drove it to 286,000 then sold it for 200 dollars to a kid for his first car
if I had kids, I would trade em for that car, mindblowin
What a gem
Now that....is a find
Lol I was given some advice by a few successful guys in making videos to make it seem like a covert mission. I believe I pulled that off.
Patrick, is this car currently considered FORSALE ?
Ah, Patrick, that explains it! Though it seams like you upped the volume for your recent '69 Charger video in New Mexico with the two pit bulls. I guess sometimes there's some shouting on cover missions. Any chance you can read the tags on the Mopars? Tag-reading is definitely your forte. Or is that a whole different thing than the Chevelles? I Like your channel. Subbed.
LMAO....a covert mission indeed. Mission completed. An epic and beautiful find.
The way he speaks is why people let him come onto their property to document these vehicles most people would be told to go away
My dream car!
Any truth to Dan Blocker (Hoss from Bonanza) owning one of the originals when they were new?
Yes. Chevrolet sponsored the show then, and cast did commercials on Bonanza set. Each got to drive one of full line. Blocker got one.
Chevrolet sponsored Bonanza for years...and cast did western town parade commercials with Bewitched cast members...and Man From Uncle. Hoss got the one he drove in commercials in 1965.
Blocker car was yellow w/ black interior.
I remember reading a car magazine article in the seventies about that car, it was indeed yellow and black.
Good stuff
Very cool! I have a 66 el camino factory l79 and would like to know where the build sheets were placed on those cars built in Fremont CA? Let me know if you do please. Thanks!
Above the gas tank.
My Kansas City built LS6 had 2 - 1 on the fuel tank, the other on top of the glove compartment liner.
Randy that was the worst of the worst plants you will find most cars made at the Fremont plant were warranty prone I heard of tabby bolts being left out and vibrations etc shit plant it only was around 15 model years and got axted
Instantly noticed the car in the video. Worked with Cliff back 20 years ago.
Belongs on the road!
