Making Money Cleaning Up Storm Damage

  • I explain how when you own forest land you can sometimes make money from natural disasters. As opposed to a lot of assets where you lose money when things are damaged. A couple weeks ago we had a big snowstorm that knocked down a bunch of trees. I clean up some of the mess with my Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 tractor with farm winch. In the process I make logs that I will put on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill and cut them in the lumber that I can sell. I also cut a little firewood that I can either use or sell. The chainsaw I am using is a Stihl MS 462 with 32 inch bar.

PLEASE do a video tour of your awesome winch and blade system.
I would love to see you remove and remount it, show all it's features, tell about service and maintenance, and tips on how to get the most out of using it.
Your channel is amazingly informative and entertaining.
    Thanks, Wilson!

A lesson I've learned is, when a old timer tells you, "It wouldn't be my first time in of such and such.." pay heed.
I find myself legitimately saying, "it wouldn't be my first time" it's usually about something that could have killed me.
Listen, young bucks. Antlers keep on growing.

Ain’t nothing like trying to keep up with roads. Keeping up with some roads is a full time job. But again it’s how you treat them. At least you got a couple nice logs there.
    Good job there Sir.

Pine is fine if it's dry. Nothing smells better than a white pine campfire. Boots? We blow thru boots in about 5-6 months. We tried all brands. Laugh if you want but Walmart Herman survivers grizzly are $64 and comfortable. Seems to last as long as the other's. Good video

As far as bribing nature goes, I think Diana is the one to contact on matters relating to forests. She's supposed to be partial to deer, but I think you could sacrifice a bull or a heifer in a pinch.

Good video Michael. I've been waiting for nature to take down a hanging tree...no luck so far but nature has taken down trees around it that I didn't want to come down 🤔

Yeah back when we burned wood for heat any time a storm blew stuff down I called those volunteer firewood candidates. Everyone I know here in western Washington burns whatever comes a long for burning especially the free stuff. That said do they have some preferred trees of course. But you can't always get your preferred and believe me if your choice is be cold or say burn pine you burn pine.

You can tell nature what tree you want knocked down by attaching branches full of live needles to the top of it, so it catches a bigger load of snow.
Those old dead trees just dont hold as much.

"Never burn Pine" what's with the never? If I go up there daily and sweep I can burn fatwood if I want. It's a matter of maintenance. I like to sweep seldom so I would be much happier putting Pine through my stove with afterburner than the one without.

Hi! I really enjoy your witty videos. I own a small tree service business in Texas and was wondering what camera equipment you prefer to use for your videos and why? I saw several links to microphones but no video equipment listed in the description. Thanks!

Maybe make some kind of replaceable canvas cover for your expensive boots that can take the abuse. That way you can finally enjoy some broken in boots that don't need replacing! Of course it might not make sense if it takes up so much of your time, or is awkward, or just makes them too hot to wear.
It sounds like what you need is some kind of boot engineered for abrasion resistance.
In any case, thanks for correcting yourself with the technically correct statement that every tree in the world had not fallen on your trailer, it's an important distinction!
