Damaged sealing of the cameras tried (dozens of types since 2006) have all enabled water penetration, including humidity, and eventually failure if used outdoors in the weather. High rainfall area here, about 3m pa. Bears would try the patience deeply, with thoughts of rug blanks. A possibility to try is taping extra hot pepper powder on them. Double sided tape with its external surface liberally coated enabling it to be tasted without penetrating a layer of tape & the camera would be something to experiment with. Extra on the external battery cover etc, other critters will rip those off. Even a separate bait just below. Two cameras facing of course, it will have entertainment value if it works. Positioning them somewhere less obvious will also enhance results. A couple of climbing steps to get it higher & out of biped predator reach is one way. A cheap laser sight rested on it will aim it ok, and wedging something behind it to adjust aim.
We bought metal boxes and used deck screws to attach it to the tree for our stealthcams, definitely helped stop the bears from chewing them up and helped keep people from stealing them. My whole family buys bear tags and fill them every year. There seems to be an over abundance of bears now, or at least a lot more than there used to be.
Michael, I feel your pain. They’ve destroyed lots of cameras, apple trees, wood splitter gas tanks, tractor seats. As for trail cameras I carry a 6-7’ ladder and get the camera up high pointing down. They’ve left them alone. I buy cameras mounts that screw into trees. I put them in scrub trees they I won’t damage by screwing the mount in. It allows me to angle the shot and center it much better than the straps. Good luck!!
How about setting up the camera in pairs so you might get a video of the “attack” to see if it gives and hints as to why they seem to be so attracted to them?
@@Dustin_the_wind I also wonder if the electronics somehow irritates them. Animals hear things at different frequencies so maybe it’s not silent to them?
Spray Lysol & sprinkle cayenne pepper on & around the camera & strap, maybe even spray down the tree & strap with bear spray so they loose interest after getting a snoot full..?
Bears are fun to observe. It’s interesting that the bears there are so interested in your cameras. I have seven cameras out on my place, and numerous bears around, but they don’t bother the cameras much - only twice in about ten years of putting out the cameras. I Also don’t have the same issue with them damaging timber. Lots of orchards and vineyards around me - a more convenient food source might keep them out of the trees.
I have found they pick up human scent and that is why they check them out would love to help you with that problem. It is amazing how many you get on camera.
It's possible the bears are hearing some frequency from the trail cameras that are causing them to attack, another RUclipsr has a similar issue with his bees, cellphone, and Bluetooth microphone whatever signal the bees pick up causes them to swarm the microphone and cellphone.
Get a cheap plastic container that fits on top of the camera. Tape it on with just well enough so a light breeze won't blow it off. Add a liberal helping of ground black pepper and cayenne pepper. Bears like to come around and stick their noses in things and take a big sniff. A cope sniffs of that mixture just might satisfy Mr. Bears curiosity about trail cams. It only takes once for dogs to figure out not to sniff around black pepper. There's also a commercial product (that used to be called "Critter Ridder" ) that you sprinkle on dogs favorite pee spot. They take one whiff and it puckers them right up. Of course bears would probably eat it, but it might be worth a try.
Cayenne pepper in a balloon attached around the camera. Of course no need to blow up the balloon or balloons, but a couple of bites on it they might leave them alone. You could try household ammonia in balloons instead of pepper. Once or two tastes of the ammonia and they will remember cameras taste bad.
Hot pepper, like others said, might work. It might repel other animals too though. It would likely get washed away from the 1st rain that happens. Are there waterproof capsules that would be broken open by anything messing with/biting them? DIY aluminum foil pouches? P.S. Do you think detritus covered root flares could be killing some of the old growth trees?
I've only had a bear bite my cameras twice in the last 25-30 years. First time was with my first 35mm film game camera. I often hang them high and use lock boxes, cables with locks and python locks. I don't understand why the cameras no longer have plastic loops for locks so anyone can mess with the sd card, settings and batteries.
A lot of these attacks appear to begin with the perp investigating above the camera lens. I wonder if it's something about the motion sensor that initially attracts their attention?
I bought the same camera on your recommendation. I did notice that at night it will turn on red lights for IR illumination. However these attacks are occuring during the day. I wonder if it is emitting a high pich noise (like a dog whistle) that the bears can hear, but we can't.
No matter what if you put something on a tree a bear will notice it immediately. You must put it in a metal box with bolts cut sharp sticking out the front so bears cannot put their teeth through the lense. Cable lock it to a tree.
Ive just moved to bear country and im a bit hesitant about going into the forest with or without my dog because im from the city and am not sure what to do it I came across a bear. Can you do a video on how to be safe in bear country? Getting a gun isn't an option for me right now. Thanks!
Do you think it's a smell thing, or is it possible the camera makes a ultrasonic sound that alerts them to George Orwell's fiction turned reality on the mountain?
I wonder what would happen if you sprayed some cayenne (or even hotter) pepper spray on there, or better yet some bear spray! Then you could let it dry before you put up the camera. Once it gets rehydrated by the bear's saliva, it'll burn like hell and hopefully put them off messing with them after they've gotten a mouthful a few times and start associating that negative experience with the cameras. Worth a try anyway.
Is it possible to use the cameras without installing a phone app? I miss the old days of physical controls. Might not survive the bears, but I don't have bears.
Fortunately, we don't have bears in this country, but over several years there was a deer that used one of my trail cameras as a mineral stone. I cannot understand that a cheap Chinese trail camera should contain healthy minerals for a deer. Even though several different deer passed by, only one was supposed to "taste" the camera.
well, I wouldn't like all that surveillance either, in my private mud bog. those cameras must make some sounds or smells. they go right for them ! the black bears always look to me like a couple of small to large guys in a bear costume wearing black fuzzy slippers. they definitely have an agenda. interesting that the birds seem to like the wallows as well. us humans are just too dumb to know what matters, I think. I'm just a dummy from Alberta.
Maybe not to you, but hilarious to us. Now WHAT could bears possibly find interesting about technology? Possibly smarter than we give them credit for, in this case, messing with you...and KNOWING it!
They can definitely smell his stench. Its not all visual a bears sense of smell is one of the best in the animal kingdom, over 2,000 times better than a human
Walking in the woods with bears all and no gun. I'd say spray but that's about as good as you are without a gun. I'll have to keep an eye at scary bear attacks to see when you show up. Oh and I don't care how much time you have spent there and are still OK.
Interesting this, I have seen many many videos of bears just giving cameras just a cursory sniff, wolves just seem to ignore them as do bobcats. Deer always notice them for some reason. I wonder why your cameras get so much attention, perhaps you should stop storing them in the Larder !

The bears are tired of the surveillance state.
😂

Someday it will be worth all the effort of putting up these trailcams when you catch a sasquatch messing with them
Add some cayenne pepper powder to season the tasty cams. I did buy one of these to test out.
Interesting video. Cool capture of the bobcat & lots of of bear activity! Thanks for sharing! 👍
How about setting up the camera in pairs so you might get a video of the “attack” to see if it gives and hints as to why they seem to be so attracted to them?
It's pretty obvious if you think about it. It is unlike anything else they encounter, and probably a hint of scent to it.
@@Dustin_the_wind I also wonder if the electronics somehow irritates them. Animals hear things at different frequencies so maybe it’s not silent to them?
You need to get the bears some bear toys to play with. Maybe a rubber ducky or two.
It’s interesting the bears notice where the cameras are. Smart animals!
Smarter than him, that's for sure
Well, stop buying such tasty cameras!

As with traps they are scenting the cameras. Also, the look like food in a can. Electric fence or bear spray with a proximity trigger. Bob in Nevada
actually, tests have shown that bears like spicy residual bear spray.
I like your channel. Thanks for sharing.
That's a bummer. The curiosity is to much for them to bear.
Thanks, Wilson.
I can bearly wait for your next video!
Bigfoot, shapeshifting into a bear to remove the camera, so it can shapeshift back into a Bigfoot and wander more freely undetected.
I think you are on to something
Is that alter identity to howtohunt....
I think you bear some responsibility :)

They know you are watching them and they don't like it! LOL
🐻 just playing Hide'n'Seek with you - They hide the Camera and the Man Seeks it out!
Your cameras must look like picnic baskets to Yogi Bear.
🐻
You should include the bear in the movie credits, maybe leave him a pizza or a Big Mac

That’s my theory too. I don’t think it’s curiosity but irritation.

It is their home too. Live with them peacefully.
The bears don't want to live with him, humans destroy nature for un natural reasons. He has taken enough of their property
Those aren't bears... They're game camera salesmen in disguise.
Wait till they start eating the seats in your atv’s! That’s lots of fun! lol Looked like a pretty respectable male in that first set! 👍🏼
Well... haven't you seen the seat in Wilson's tractor? A nasty bear ripped it up. -No nice things for Wilson!
I just couldn’t bear to watching any more…😂😂
What camera do use to film your adventues, and do you use more then one?
Whenever the camera goes, there it is.
It is bear season in Oregon, ya know...

Wilson, here on the East Coast we have more bears around my home than we do at deer camp 20min west. We have lots of them there bears in PA also!!!

Bear Cam!!!
Bears are such Luddites.
Try leaving a “ pic-a-nic “ basket for Yogi and he would not mess with the camera
I believe that bear thought that this was a government spy thing. It seemed like she wasn't happy about it.
You need to have a tailgate meeting with the bears and explain to them that the cameras are not a chew toy.😅
Where is this located?
Maybe you could spray a scent on them that bears dont like. I think right now they're intrigued by the smell
A lot of these attacks appear to begin with the perp investigating above the camera lens. I wonder if it's something about the motion sensor that initially attracts their attention?
Bears can’t even take a dump in woods without someone watching. Creepy!
Like Santa!
try putting some bear spray on the camera. just a suggestion.
Bear spray cross contaminates really easily. Be sure to wear disposable gloves if you try this.
Why? We are rooting for the bears. Its their forest and they couldn't care less what the deed grantor says.
Not a problem for me. Glad its a critter I don't have to deal with.
These grizzly encounters are bearly believable!
Let me tell you friend, bears are like that nation wide

That might be a tree the bear likes to mark. The camera frustrated him. You see him pacing around. Best to move the camera to another tree.
Mint
Maybe bears are thinking this is why I cant have a nice forest they keep putting these dumb cameras here and I cant poop or eat in peace?
The bears are pissed because their trees keep disappearing.
Wow, looks like mid day is an active time there.
My bears climb into my apple trees.
Sounds like it's time for some bear sausage
Would putting some bear spray around the camera be helpful?
No matter what if you put something on a tree a bear will notice it immediately. You must put it in a metal box with bolts cut sharp sticking out the front so bears cannot put their teeth through the lense. Cable lock it to a tree.
Michael, this is not bear related, but what kind of hat are you wearing in the video (and not the hard hat)?
How do you stop the bears from wrecking your home when no one is there?
Ive just moved to bear country and im a bit hesitant about going into the forest with or without my dog because im from the city and am not sure what to do it I came across a bear. Can you do a video on how to be safe in bear country? Getting a gun isn't an option for me right now. Thanks!
Well , I can say I've seen the inside of a bears mouth and lived thru it.
Do you think it's a smell thing, or is it possible the camera makes a ultrasonic sound that alerts them to George Orwell's fiction turned reality on the mountain?
I’m going with smell.
Even older trail cams without any Bluetooth signal can be destroyed by bears.
I wonder what would happen if you sprayed some cayenne (or even hotter) pepper spray on there, or better yet some bear spray! Then you could let it dry before you put up the camera. Maybe they are catching your scent. Latex gloves when mounting the camera might help. Thxs for the vids!
I’d guess the plastic off gassing smells like possible food 🤷🏽♂️
@@dgoodman1484 Humans do put a lot of food inside plastic.
Stop putting BBQ sauce on the cameras!
tweekers and bears are unpredictable forest dwellers always lurking in the night for opportunities to steel or damage, what to do ?
Is it possible to use the cameras without installing a phone app? I miss the old days of physical controls. Might not survive the bears, but I don't have bears.
perhaps bears want a little privacy when they are doing what bears do in the woods.
I'll buy a tshirt saying "THAT's not right"
I was thinking ‘bears are the reason we can’t have nice things’. E
My guess is the salt off your hands is what attracting the bears.
or his body odor
Maybe the bears want royalties? Is there a bear union?
obviously, you're buying the wrong flavor cameras. try spraying them with air freshener. that would work on me.
Do they sniff out the cameras from where you have been handling them?
