Fun fact when people say it rains a lot in London.... New York City has roughly double the amount of rain on average in a year .

For us Europeans outside the UK, we use London in the same way you north Americans use New York city. We go there for weekend breaks, to the musicals, concerts , theatres, shopping and drink and dine. With kids we do the museums and they get to see and maybe buy the newest stuff that's popular for them before we have them where we live. When i was in my late teens and early twenties and could travel to London on my own, i wanted to live there. Now that i`m in my 40`s i don´t want to live there because it is to big, busy and expensive, but love taking a few day`s trip there. London has over 9 million people living in the city, and then there are all of us other europeans and even north americans coming there for a long weekend all year round. It can get pretty hectic, but with all big cities, they always have new happening areas outside the tourist hot spots. I recommend checking these places out and not just doing the typical tourist things.

London born and bred - it's true, there is so much to do here and the activities are so varied, rock venues, museums, beautiful parks, huge graveyards to explore, art galleries, pubs, huge variations of cafes, or just exploring the ancient back streets! Lived and worked in LA for a year (Ocean Park Blvd) and had a great time but the culture was lacking diversity! I wouldn.t swap overcast London for the furnace that is The Valley!

London's warming up..high 70s today..going into the high 80's next week. Not good on some deep tube lines that have no air con...probably hot 90f on them!!

Weather changes throughout the same day ! I have had 70 wonderfully stimulating and safe years in London(29 years just 2 miles from Central London and then 11 miles further out from 1983, so 41 years in Outer London). My Diary tells me that since 17 years old that I have been out socially or walking 16,500 (approximately) without incident including 6,500 Sporting occasions. To be born in peacetime and after the effects of the war like the Rationing of food and living iin London in The 1960s when London was the World centre for Music, The Arts, Theatre and Photography meant it was a great place to be. There are, officially,100,000 "Places Of Interest" in London which has 32 Boroughs and 60,000 streets:)

London (I lived there for 10+ years) is an amazing place. When the western world collapses it will be remembered for all of the right reasons. A parliament that was the first European country to ban slavery to having the most diverse free museums and people. What's not to love? I even loved the Tube during rush hour.

The Tube is a Londoner's favourite topic for gripes because it's so essential. It's a great service when it's working well, but when it doesn't work due to industrial action, excessive weather or breakdowns, it's a tragedy for those who use it and you'll regularly hear about it.

Sheffield offers things to see that London doesn't have. For a start it has a decent tram service. The industrial museum has a working 12,000 HP steam engine that they power up. There's the Crucible theatre for the Snooker championships. Sheffield is the most wooded city in Europe. A hike down the Rivelin river valley is a good afternoon trip where you can see where they used water powered millstones to sharpen cutlery. The Peak District national park is just 15 minutes away. And in my opinion, Sheffield has better pubs than London. I stayed in the suburb of Stannington which is more like a country village with horse riders on the roads.

London Bridge most certainly DID fall down. In 1282, several of the bridges 20 starlings gave way and sections(with houses on ) fell into the Thames. Queen Eleanor had been given the monet to look after the bridge but she spent it on herself. After that, the City took over and founded the Bridge House Trust to spend the money on maintenance. It is still around today with a fund of over £ 700 million!

The main positive about London is that it's really easy to settle in. No one gives a shit how you live your life. The big negative is just how expensive it is. The main thing is you'll never discover the whole city, no matter how long you live here. It's simply too big and there are too many things happening and too many communities for any person to get a handle on it all. I love my city, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

It's funny that the weather is such a stereotype - It rains more in LA, NYC, Paris, Berlin etc etc.. The issue is it has more cloudy days for 6-8 months. That creates a false perception.
I think you would both LOVE it, and surprise yourself. You like music, good food and a cool vibe - That is LONDON babyyyy! My friends and family from US, Australia, NZ and Canada have all said it is easily one of their favourite cities ever. There is a reason it is in the top 3 most visited cities in the world. Thing about the tourism is, hardly anyone lives in zone 1 of London, they're mostly living in the cheaper zones 2-6, so natives only feel the effect of too many people when they're going to the touristy areas themselves or missing a train because of the crowds. But since the trains come every two minutes it's really not that bad.

Some interesting facts for you guys. Did you know that London is twice the size of NYC but only has half the population? London has so much green space that the UN officially classifies London as a forrest, in fact it's the world's largest urban forest. A visitor to London may be surprised to discover that over 300 languages are Spoken there. London is only the 39th on the list of wettest cities in Europe. Way ahead of London in terms of precipitation are cities such as Athens, Nicosia and Madrid.

The weather isn’t as bad as people seem to think. New York has far more rain than London! Also the crime rate isn’t as bad as the media often like to make out - it’s a huge political football, and it’s often made to look worse than it is. Let’s face it, zero school shootings in the country let alone London. But on a ranking of other cities in Europe, London is 62nd out of 188. Not ideal but not the worst.
It’s my home town. There’s always SO much going on, the food is amazing with every type of food you can think of available. I love that it’s a total melting pot of nationalities. I grew up in a hugely multicultural area and it, for me, was a positive way to grow up. And there’s so much green space too which often surprises people who visit. Masses of parks and open spaces which can really help when it’s horribly hot in the summer!

That's a myth regarding the American who bought the 1960's London Bridge he shipped the stones and used them to face a bridge he had built over Lake Havasu...but he knew which bridge he was buying. There have been bridges around that crossing over the Thames since Roman times, and had been rebuilt several times and the bridge whilst it didn't fall down per se, it did sink into the soft river bed and the supports of the bridge did at one era clog up the river causing the currents to slow and the river to freeze solid in the winter. So much so that Winter Fairs were held, including fires on the ice...until later minutes were used to rebuild a better bridge with stronger supports, until it needed to be widened to take the increase in motorised traffic.
