Why "What Comes After" Was the Perfect Sendoff for Rick Grimes

- In 2010, a show called The Walking Dead graced our screens about an officer named Rick Grimes trying to navigate his way through the zombie apocalypse. The show was based on a comic series of the same name and everyone knew that Rick Grimes was going to be an incredibly difficult character to cast. He’s not only the protagonist of the series, but he’s a character with multiple different dimensions making him a hero, a villain, and most of the time finding something between the two.

The episode would've been actually perfect if Rick had talked with Carl instead of Sasha.
👀👀
Should have been Lori
I disagree, him seeing Sasha represented sacrifice, like in 7x16 where she gave her life to save everyone, and Rick attempted the same in this very Episode.
Him seeing Carl or Lori would've secured his death.
Would´ve loved to see that person be Glen with the line "Hey, dumbass".
Carl or Lori would’ve been great. Sasha doesn’t make any real sense, and you could tell she was the only other actor/actress they could get. The other two cameos were great, though.
Whats sad is that rick was the only one who had hope in the bridge when nobody else did but when he tried to bring the walkers to it expecting it to collapse, it held. Which proved him right but at the worst time
12 yrs later and they still stayed doubting him😂
Even at his death,he listened to his brother
I don't know whether to be upset about this or laugh 😅
The Scott Wilson scenes got me emotional and I hope he is resting easy.
R.I.P Scott Wilson
That nearly got me. But seeing Abraham, Dale, Beth, Daryl - even Jimmy from Season Two - on the floor got to me the most
Glenn was the first choice to appear. Because it was Glenn that introduced Rick to the Atlanta group. However, Steven Yeun said no. Sasha was the second choice since Sash sacrificed her life in the finale episode of Season 7. So it’s like:
Shane = Strength
Herschel = Wisdom
Sasha = Sacrifice
Btw, Carl was never considered.
They didn’t wanna pay him adult wages
@@themainpoetrychannel1640 greedy fucks killed one of my favorite characters over money
No but like how is Rick's send off even considered anything close to a "perfect" send off? Two reasons why Rick dies at the beginning of season 9 was because Andrew Lincoln wanted to spend more time with family and because the producers did not want to pay Chandler Riggs an adult wage. This is what happens to most characters in the show. Laurie Holden got essentially fired after being promised an 8 year contract only after a few years on set DESPITE just buying a house in Atlanta to get on set faster, IronE gets fired because he didn't care much for the show after not being allowed to do essentially anything for 2 whole seasons. The writers essentially makes Beth kill herself attacking Dawn because they write her as a very ignorant/stubborn character, Coleman gets killed literally the same episode to a fucking child zombie, Tom Payne gets killed off after doing nothing for the entirety of season 8.
And don't get me started on the last 2 seasons. So many scenes are awkwardly written, the plot is just so dislikeable and the cast has slowly been withering away, slowly but surely. So many moments of the show stray so far away from the comic, and in my opinion, when the show follows the comic, like Glenn's death, it creates a memorable and emotional moment, but when the show doesn't follow the comic, like Abrahams death which is immediately followed by Glenn's death, makes it a less memorable moment for Abraham specifically. Had the show followed the comic, Abrahams death would be remembered by many people and have meaning and we'd have him longer on the show which I don't think anyone would say no to. Lets hope they don't screw up the 6 episodes.
@@kaincanicosa1366 You know it's not real, right? No-one died, it's just TV.
@@nodiggity9472 notice the use of the word "characters"
The small tribute to Scott was so beautiful man
Felt I needed to do it. Thank you for appreciating it ✊🏻
@@thethriftytypewriter I get emotional everytime I see the scene of Rick and hershel reminds me of my own Passed on Grandfather ,man I miss watching the show
@@thethriftytypewriterWhat’s the name of the song?
I nearly teared up 😢
It really was I got chills rip to Scott
Andrew Lincoln was so good in his role that after he was gone the show felt a bit empty, but the episode did him justice
Carl did not appear in any hallucination because Rick was searching for his family for the whole episode. If he had found Carl even in a flashback - he would stop running, accept his death
I agree Sasha was a weird addition, I'd guess they still had her on contract after she died in the show and saved some work by using her, canonically I guess they were trying to show that his "family" wasn't just Carl, Lori, Judith, but everyone he met on the journey. That being said Tyrese,Dale, Glen, or maybe even Andrea could have been super exciting to see. Andrea could have seen how Rick choose to save the people of Woodbury and befriended Michonne and told him he hadn't "gone cold" after all
That would’ve been really cool! Seeing Andrea after such a long time just like Shane and Hershal.
Sasha made sense b/c she gave Rick and CO a chance to fight back after Negan and the scavengers had them all held at gun point. Had Sasha not killed herself and came out of the coffin still alive. Negan would have probably killed her in self defense then the scavengers would have killed Rick and the others
@@thethriftytypewriter Laurie Holden was originally going to survive but the showrunner at the time made the very last minute decision to kill her off without actually informing her ahead of time. I think that act kind of left a sour taste in Laurie’s mouth. She also probably wasn’t even considered.
They used the dynamite in an earlier episode to redirect the horde. Also I believe if Rick saw Carl or Glenn it probably would’ve been his death. Sasha was someone who lost everything and still sacrificed herself for the group, she was also family especially during the dog days of s5
I thought they said they were using to clear rocks
I really wished there was a hallucination of him in the Tank with Glenn on the radio would’ve been an even greater send off
Glenn's actor wasn’t available
This episode along with ‘The Day will come when you won’t be’ are some of my favourite episodes of the Walking Dead.
What Comes After was perfect send of to Rick Grimes while still moving the story forward by introducing the older Judith and Magna’s group.
yep ı think so. final moments of 6×16 and entire 7×1 are one of the best. it was really tense and well written but also hard to watch. ı totally liked it.
I love how they never forgot about what Jenner said to rick
@@intruder6628 Jenner, the character that wasn't even meant to exist to begin with. It's just so cool!
I loved the scene when Daryl breaks down in tears. That's his best friend, his brother, and to his knowledge he's gone, for good
Hell yes it was. I watched it again after some years of not seeing Rick Grimes in the show, and man. His acting is just on another level. He made the show.
Can't wait for his return.
Them using Carl wouldn’t have made sense simply because Rick is spending the whole episode trying to find his family so him doing that mid ep would’ve ruined the pay off of his last line. Glen would’ve been the best choice by far simply due to their relationship throughout the show. Abraham would’ve also been a good choice that the fans would’ve also loved
rest in peace Scott Willson, one of my favorite characters in the show and most likely a great person in real life as well.
Such a good actor. I didn't realize until recently that he was in the movie In Cold Blood.
I think what hit me hard was how desperate everyone was to save Rick
If Rick had seen Carl or Lori, he would have died, he would have found his original family. His living family are people that he met and survived with along the way. Sasha was an odd addition, but she helped him realize that he had found his family after all.
Glenn definitely should've been the one to replace Sasha. I mean, just imagine Rick wandering thru his hallucination and then someone stands up behind him just to say "Hey.. dumbass" (a callback to literally the very first words Glenn ever said to Rick). Would've been much more satisfying for the last person Rick hallucinates about to be the 1st (technically 2nd if you count Morgan) person that saved his life in the series.
Can't wait to see officer friendly back in action.
Yes, this episode was a great way to bring Rick journey to an end in the Walking Dead show. Well acted, well written and very well directed
Can’t wait to see Rick again in the upcoming Rick & Michonne series
When will that start?
Rest in peace Scott Wilson 🙏❤ the tribute you did for him was beautiful and had me crying
Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes is one of the best leading men on television. Seriously underrated performance.
This episode was fantastic, just wish they would've brought back Lori/Carl.
Holy shit. I stopped being emotional about this show towards the end. But this video you made ripped my guts out. Hershel. I cried so hard when I heard about Mr. Wilson’s passing, and so soon after this episode. Sometimes I just watch this scene to feel something. Lol. You’ve made such a beautiful tribute to Hershel. ❤
This is an episode that does everything right and also my favorite episode of not only the show, but also of the entire TWD TV universe!
Scott Wilson was phenomenal in this show….RIP ❤️❤️❤️
Your tribute to Scott Wilson made me cry so hard. Very nice. Also if you see this, thank you for producing so much positive TWD content. I just binged so many of your videos but this is the only comment I was able to make. Thank you thank you.
Ohhh you got me in tears over here. 😢 RIP Scott Wilson.
The only reason Judith was able to handle the kick of the revolver even though she is to young to be able to actually handle it is because she was the daughter of Shane / Rick and raised by Rick Daryl Carol Maggie and Michonne. Judith is probably the toughest person her age and shes so badass that not even the kick from the Grimes family revolver has any effect on her
that sounds a bit silly tbh..
@@DM-Oz nah. The girl has bones of titanium and the muscles of a T-Rex.
I really loved Sasha and her story, she became so suicidal in season 5 and gave her life to protect the group in s7 and it directly correlated to Rick’s sacrifice not only on the bridge but the entire show
So looking forward to seeing the legend Rick Grimes on my screen again, since leaving and multiple rewatches, he has gained true legendary status for me as one of the greatest characters in television history. It's been my number one hype for this franchise since he left, can't wait to see how his story ends. He IS the Walking Dead.
An absolute travesty the Emmys completely ignore the Horror genre, Andrew Lincoln would've won it all. Incredible acting 100% at all times.
That episode is so so good but i wish carl was still alive so he could be the next leader of Alexandria and we could have see how carl would act when rick is dead so in that way they could really kill rick off and not to save him for another time to return because we had a new rick called CARL GRIMES
Man I love this show so much 🥺 I cried my eyes out when I saw this for the first time . One of the best episodes in this series
Oh man you have me emotional with Scott Wilson. I can't believe it's been 5 years well 6 years since we're in March 2024.
Yeah I think this episode should of been the series finale and episode 6 starts a spinoff that’s my head cannon
@@justinpatton6996yeah I think so.
Love your videos. I was a big fan of Sasha. He seemed to be there for her in the church when they first met Gabriel. Also, when Bob died. Also, she was also down for whatever and always had the group’s back. Period. Sasha was a real one. Carl would’ve been more appropriate tho.
Mr Typewriter. I stopped watching the walking dead around the Negen/Glenn era. Not because of the story or the characters (i had read past that in the comic so i was already more or less aware), but because of an IRL breakup years ago. Blah blah that was 'our show' and with the breakup I couldn't watch any longer. MAIN POINT: I'm glad i'm getting caught up through your channel, especially because of how in many videos you tell us the "ideal" plot of the episodes despite any jank that occurred in the actual television production.
love this my guy, I suggested it and you gave us the content we want to see.
thanks bro 👍
same I suggested under every video of this kind
I hadn't thought about it until now, but I feel like Daryl 100% blames himself for Rick's death as him distracting Rick was what inevitably lead to Rick's apparent death.
I wanna take this moment to have a little fun and try to explain the dynamite. Although the dynamite may be convienet i think it easy to assume that it was going to be used to redirect the herd. If you recall, there was a moment between Rosita and Arat where they were blowing a rock slide to redirect the herd (I believe). So maybe for the same reason, they were transporting the dynamite to its location but got left on the bridge due to the commotion at the campsite (Between Carol and Saviors). Leading to a random box of dynamite being left on their newly built bridge.
Really great video! I love the Scott Wilson Memorial also
i discovered your channel recently, and i’ve loved watching your walking dead videos while getting ready for work in the morning or sitting on the bus. this show has been a big part of my life for a long time so it’s nice to listen to you give your thoughts on it.
I appreciate that a lot! Hope I can help you start the day off right! 😂
His last line is very poetic cause his first words in the show were along the lines of “I’m looking for my family” and his last words were “I found them”
the best thing about the Sasha scene was the nod to the comic, in which one of the variant covers for issue #100 was Rick standing amongst the bodies just like they did on the tv show.
You tube sent me and I'm glad. This video was awesome. Now I'll go watch the rest. Great job. Time to subscribe
these videos are so great i have no idea how you aren't more popular
I think the reason Sasha makes some sense is because of her sacrifice for them all in season seven, she killed herself to give them an opening, and if anyone remembers, Carl was the only reason Sasha and Tyreese survived long enough to join the group. It wasn't the impact that Sasha let on Rick, more so the impact she left on Carl. She was one of the first people he truly saved and he was there when they saw she was dead, so it does make some sense when you think about it for it to be Sasha in that scene. (It would've been Glenn, but Steven Yeun didn't want to come back, and Carl wasn't even an option after the way they let Chandler Riggs go.) I understand it's not the happy scene we all wanted, but the logistics are all there if you think about it.
This episode was so good it had me crying
I just watched this episode and I almost cried when they brought back Hershel, he was my favorite character of the older seasons.
What always make me laugh is nobody heard the helicopter. Those things are bloody loud, we hear them coming miles away around here in the countryside.
It should have been Glen being the third “dead” person to visit him, but the actor refused to do it iirc.
That part where Shane tells Rick to "wake up," scared the 💩 out of me! hahahaha
wow I just now watched this episode 10 mins ago for the first time. can't wait to watch it
You’re the absolute best!
I’m fully convinced the only reason we haven’t seen the helicopters is because of how cheap AMC is. Watching season 10 for the first time it’s incredibly jarring how they’ve “discovered” aerial drone footage.
I think the reason they went with Sasha instead Carl was because the entire arc of this episode was Rick having to accept that he was going to die and his bridge would be destroyed. He needed to understand that they could rebuild it without him, just like how Sasha had faith that what she did would have an impact despite knowing she would be dead before she ever saw the results. And in the end her sacrifice is what gave our group the upper hand on the saviours in the first place. I think a lot of people forget that about Sasha because it’s a very weirdly paced season and episode. Carl died helping some random guy, there’s not much crossover.
This whole video made me so emotional
Great review of this episode! Hope your next video covers Season 1 of Tales of The Walking Dead now that it wrapped up last week!
Man I subscribed to this channel because I wanted to look at typewriters but I need to check this "television" it looks good
I had the pleasure to meet scott at a comic con. I walked right up to him and said sir i dont have money for a pic and i dont want an autograph. I asked if i could simply shake his hand and thanked him for his performance and overall effect he left on me as hershel. Genuinely a great man. Rest in peace.
I took a break from the walking dead for a while after Glenn, this was the first episode I saw until then. I watched it with my brother when it aired and it made me cry and I went back and watched from the beginning again. I love this show so much. I still need to finish season 9 and start season 10 but this definitely makes me want to just restart again 😅
4:30 Yesss. Finally someone got the "Don't Dead, Open Inside" right. I have heard people say "Don't Open, Dead Inside" which makes no sense because that's not what the door says.
You made me cry
Love this episode analysis. Andrew Lincoln was amazing as Rick!
The hershel send off u just did had me crying
Love this channel sir! Keep up the hard work. You'll be at 50k in no time! Thanks 😭
I feel like the Sasha scene should have been Glenn. But, I know he was busy at the time and couldn’t come back. I still feel if it was Glenn, it is more fitting since Glenn did save Rick when he was stuck in the tank.
THE BEST VIDS EVER
Completely agree about Scott Wilson playing Herschel. He was my favourite (next to Rick). RIP Scott Wilson.
I think Jadis will have a redemption arc, she will sacrifice his life for rick grimes, same song when Glenn saves rick from walkers in the first episode
She survives as we se her in world beyond
I didn't like how they had Daryl cry like he woke up that day knowing Rick was gonna die and he was just waiting for the moment. Michonne had a more natural reaction to his supposed death
The dynamite was actually used earlier in the season to lure walker hordes away if I remember correctly
Ahh okay thank you. Still don't know why it was on the bridge 😂
It would’ve been way better if Rick saw Glenn in the don’t open dead inside doors, Rick looking around at all the bodies and then hearing “hey dumbass” turning around and seeing Glenn, then Glenn giving this similar speech Sasha does. That would’ve hit SO MUCH HARDER especially due to all of the conflict between Maggie and negan in this episode as well, would’ve been 100x better.
This show is gonna touch ma damn heart
Having Lori or Carl instead of Sasha makes more sense as their deaths had a larger impact on Rick, and Lori also matches the theme of sacrificing herself for others, as she died so Judith could live, and Glenn could be in the Hershel flashback to remind Rick of helping others like he did in the start
Great Vid, Scott Wilson bit was super emosh! My understanding is that the dynamite was there as a contingency for that very situation?
I love Rick Grimes send off, what a wonderful character
The dynamite on the bridge was used previoulsy in 9x02, Rosita and Arat were blasting rocks that had fallen on a road on some mountainside.
Shane’s return was sick
Hey man video idea for you, one that may get you some heat 🤣 I remember in another video you mentioned you understood why they decided to kill Carl (can’t remember which video). I’d love to see a full in depth “in defense of killing Carl” or something like that where you elaborate on this feeling you had. Anyways, love the channel and very happy I discovered it recently.
That would definitely put me under some fire 😂 maybe more than when I said Rick became worse than Shane 😂
@@thethriftytypewriter well remember the saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” 😂🤣
Bro why do i nearly cry every time i hear him say "I found them". Fucking hell, Rick truly is iconic
1. The river makes a bend I guess, hence Carol and co can divert the walkers sideways (but yeah, not shown on screen)
2. I guess that Chandler was still in dispute with amc and hence a replacement was needed (Sasha)
3. The dynamite was talked about 1 or 2 episodes before, it was planned to make a rock collapse to block off a herd (but yeah, not enough set up and why is it on the bridge)
4. Could be the dynamite made the part of the bridge rick was standing on collapse and he just fell down into the water.
It really should have been Glenn instead of Sasha imo, I have always had the thought had Rick seen Carl or Lori, he would have found his family and not woken back up. Great episode.
This episode was not only a perfect send-off for Scott Wilson.
Man, I cannot wait to watch all your Walking Dead and Game of Thrones stuff once I'm caught up on those shows. Still have only seen the first 4 seasons of GoT and 2 of The Walking Dead. Both have been damn great so far.
You’re in for one hell of a binge! With both shows and my videos!
Damn! TWD is a masterpiece! That being said, much of its identity comes from the element of surprise… I don’t think these videos are beneficial to your intake on what comes after (haha, get it?).
@@handsomeman9433 Yup, I haven't even watched this video yet.
I don't get how y'all don't know about the Sasha situation. So that's what I got from it that Rick Grimes was so appreciative with what Sasha did for him to start the war against him and Negan. she sacrificed herself for him and the group AKA her family with Rick is a part of and possibly held her high regard for being a reason why they're in the position that they are now otherwise it would have ended that day. So if Sasha was the beginning of a war to bring Rick back from being the scared cowardice version of him. It was fitting for her to send him off saying that you found your family like I did when I sacrificed myself for them
if you havent already, i would love an episode on hershal. he was my favorite character. so many of his scenes made me emotional with how wise and kind he always was
RIP Scott Wilson
I love this Episode!!!
This was a Good Episode and we Miss You Rick 😭
This episode was so amazing. It just sucked that herschels actor passed around the time of the episode
I heard that nick death music in the background. That soundtrack kills me.
I fucking LOVE Rick Grimes.
This is also a good series finale too. Showing Judith, revealing society survived because of Rick Grimes.
Man, I started reading the books before the show came out, as soon as the show came out I watched every episode every Sunday, this was the last episode that I watched though, at the end when he shot the bridge my eyes started GOING Rick is the walking dead
Carl would have made more sense in terms of fan service as well as influence on Rick... BUT, Sasha actually fits better for the Wizard Of Oz theory... not the characters themselves but that they were the missing parts: Shane - Brains, Hershel - Heart, Sasha - Courage... It can be debated who was what but when zeroed in on what each of them say to Rick, it is unmistakable.
I’ve never heard this Wizard of Oz theory but I like it! I’ll have to give it some more research 🧐
@@thethriftytypewriter I honestly don't remember where I heard or possibly if I just imagined it... but Oz references have been infused so much that it's its own trope. Still, it does fit that narrative of point A to point B pretty well.
The dynamite was there to help redirect the herd but they couldn’t use it in time so they just kept it on the bridge until they needed it
I’m not crying, you’re crying
I am most likely mistaken but I want to a conversation about the dynamite was had in an earlier episode. I think Eugene was waiting for it to help blow boulders or debris blocking the path to the bridge. If I’m not mistaken, it was stolen by one of the renegade Saviors working on the bridge.
I could very well be wrong but I want to say I do remember it being discussed. Same episode where Justin was murdered
Best episode!
I'm going to be honest. I love this show, been following since the time when I actively went to the stores to buy entire seasons on DVD, thinking DVD's would still be a thing when the show would end.
And altough I thoroughly enjoyed this show, they drag it along so much - I've given up so many times,... Every season ending is a cliffhanger, never is a season just a contained story. They build something up, something comes along and destroys it - wait for a year-and we move along to the next place. And now, even the series finale does this. Strap in for the spin-offs. No, I just wanted it to be done. I just wanted an end to it all. Off to the sunset, everyone gets their face eaten - just anything. No, now we get to see Rick truly becoming helicopter boy. Now we get to see how Daryl goes to... France? No, look. I l like Rick. I like Daryl. But their best stories have been told. I know I'm going to watch it when it comes out, just like all the other seasons. But this time around, I'm really not looking forward anymore.
Hershel is and was my favorite good guy in the series. The acting played a massive part. Sad as it is, that was an incredible send off
I don’t think that Rick was hallucinating when he saw Shane Herschel Asher. I think he was close to death and it was those actual people reaching out from the beyond to help keep him alive and give him what he needs
Okay so if it is not a near-death hallucination than what you are saying is that actual Corpses were reaching out towards him as well as speaking to him?
Sorry to make it into a joke, but you do realize that what you are describing is a hallucination, correct? Even if you are giving it some sort of religious or spiritual context, in the end you are still describing a hallucination.
I wish instead of Sasha it was Glenn the first person to help him in time of need it would of been great because if Glenn came back he would help Rick again.
