- Real Skateboards presents Out of Sight : Treasure Island DIY - a full length 43 minute documentary filmed over 2 years. We didn’t set out to make this film, it happened by chance... What started as a simple 'How-To Build A Ledge’ video with our friend Josh Matlock ended with police cars and tickets, not unlike what usually happens to skateboarders daily... That bust lead to finding a new spot to build, away from prying eyes, on the semi-abandoned Treasure Island between Oakland and San Francisco. We kept the cameras rolling as it became clear the spot wasn’t getting demolished in the blink of an eye. It didn’t take long however for the city to find out about the spot but the crew had a few more trick up their sleeves… See how this crew of renegade DIY builders took their ideas to City Hall and turned a desolate tennis court into an approved public skatepark.
We hope the film inspires the skateboarders in your area to unite together and build a DIY spot of their own. If there is already a DIY in your area it may light the fire under a new generation to get involved...

This is what Skateboarding is! its NOT SLS, ETN, Energy drinks, etc. The spoils of skating isn't money, its creativity, its producing something new for others to learn, whether it be a trick, or a DIY skatepark. Best film about skating I've ever seen.
Your 100% right and I've struggled with this too but without all of that and people seeing it as a positive it would not have lead to these things being approved and professionals defenitly deserve to be making as much money as they can. Who am I to say don't go out and get bread. If there's money I'm involved
I’ve not watched the video yet but I can say energy drinks aren’t all bad. If redbull hadn’t sent me the first pallet of supplies I’d have never started the diy I build.

I lived in frisco from '02-'12, lived in the mission and remember when portrero del sol was built. There was *nothing better* than waking up to the smell of sweet breads and boiled chicken and the sound of muni and skateboards.
I miss it *so fuckin much.*
BMX has the same issue with dirt jump aka trails being built diy, in low key spots, then show up one day and a Dozer's been in and leveled years worth of sweat, tears and broken bones. I'm no skater, but this video was heart wrenching and warming at the same time. I Wish skateboarders the best. Love what you created for everyone that followed you...especially us bike riders. There was a legendary spot in my hometown that lived forever. Eventually the city realized that little plot was a gold mine and of all things, a Perkins and Taco Bell got built there. I never got into BMX but had so much fun watching those dudes kill that spot!

This is fucking awesome. I started skating when I was 10 loved it everyday. Just growing up in s small town where there really wasn't much spots to skate & always getting kicked out of places with cops on our ass was one of the reasons it kinda died off. Friends getting into drugs starting to go down the wrong path it eventually just went to hell. Now I'm starting to open that door back up been watching a lot of videos, time has passed but I'm ready to get back on the Board. What you did was awesome.
I can't stress enough how cool it is to be a part of something so fresh. I volunteered a lot of time there and nothing is better than seeing people you worked beside succeed. I'm going back and my hopes for the park look in the future for many more years
43 y/o now, and I have to say one of my favorite memories of Skating was building little DIY spots. We would search the Factories and Dumpsters for wood and anything that could be skated or used to build ramps, ledges, and whatever else came to mind.. We'd build it, it would be sick for a couple weeks, then it would be gone - then onto the next spot!!!!

Such a heart warming story! Skateboarding will be around for a long time. It’ll have its ups and downs but to those of us who have grown up on it and love it the vibe keeps going on a skateboard!! Skateboarding Is Not A Crime!!

I love this raw emotion, raw talent, and raw spots side of skateboarding. Could say the roots of skating honestly. Skating a crusty spot vs a perfect skatepark makes a huge difference in the feeling of accomplishment.
This is the definition of "Dreams coming true". Alot of people would've given up & went to a regular 9-5 job, but these guys pushed through all the bullshiit & made it happen. Well done to all the guys & gals who had hands on this project. SKATERS DESERVE THIS RESPECT!!! I'm inspired once again!! Thank you skateboarding!!!!

AlexCoronaPhoto i've been there twice and both times were amazing! I got to skate pier 7 and 3rd and army and checked out a bunch of hill spots! It's a amazing city for punk and skateboarding! I'm jealous of people who live there!

Seeing this brings back memories when I lived in PHX and found this lil rinky dink diy on the outskirt of the city . I used to go skate it all the time and met some dudes who started building and I asked to help. These were the best times skateboarding gave me. Being part of the community is such a blessing . Thank you skateboarding

I stayed in treasure island for 2 weeks when i had an art show in sf . Was amazing . Such a trippy place . Only did a bit of skating cause i didnt have health insurance at the time . From canada wasnt prepared for the hospital bill

DIY should be seen as a positive thing. Here in Hawaii there isn't many skateparks, I would love to change that. I skate state park flat lots, because the skateparks are so small and so few, that I wish i could build small stuff!

Wanted to say again the filming and photography is really creative I know a lot of people go to college and get taught the same types of modern filming maybe this is x 100 still very artistic though.
