The Center for Immigration Studies hosted a panel discussion on the effects of the federal government’s immigration policies on Black Americans. The panelists explored historical and recent trends, focusing on the wage and employment impacts on Black communities.
The July 11, 10 a.m. Eastern event featured representatives of Black America for Immigration Reform, a non-profit founded by Black American leaders advocating for immigration reforms that serve the interests of Black men and women.
Roy Beck, author of Back of the Hiring Line: A 200-year History of Immigration Surges, Employer Bias and Depression of Black Wealth, also joined the panel, exploring how government policies and actions that have enabled employers to depress Black wages and to avoid hiring African Americans.
The participants reflected on the views of leaders like W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and A. Philip Randolph, who believed that mass immigration harmed their community. The panel considered whether restricting immigration today would tighten the labor market and provide more opportunities for Black American workers.

This started a long time ago. Im white and live in Tennessee. Our jobs left our community. My husband and I commuted to Georgia to work in the carpet mills. We worked there several years and we lost our jobs to illegals. They also was making more money on their payday than I was. They was getting everything for free then,this happened at the end of Bush Jr.'s term. Its not just a black matter. It's a US citizens matter!

My cousin works at a major factory in Memphis. She works in the office at the front desk so she sees everybody that comes in and transfers calls. Her company hired a Mexican HR woman and had her hiring nothing but illegals over the last 2 years. When one shows up for an interview, they have 6 other guys with them. Can’t speak English and messing up on the job daily. But they’re so cheap that the company is just dealing with it! A few years ago this channel talked about EEOC federal lawsuits against staffing companies in Memphis where they would tell everyone there are no jobs but would say in Spanish “wait until til they all leave” and give the Latino immigrants the jobs! This is subterfuge!

History taught us this 100 years ago. Prior to WWI, 80% of African Americans lived in the rural Jim Crow South, with a high proportion struggling economically as sharecroppers. At the same time, northern factories were doing pretty well, and the bulk of their labor force consisted of European immigrants who were coming over (legally) in record numbers each year.
WWI breaks out in Europe, and the US is eventually brought into the war. The US restricts and greatly reduces immigration during WWI. Because of the war, manufacturing increases, but the previous labor force that had consisted of immigrants had been cut off. Guess whom northern factories turned to to fill this labor need. They turned to African Americans from the South. During WWI the US experiences the largest internal migration in its history as over 500,000 African Americans suddenly leave the rural South and move to the urban North for better economic and social opportunities. While the North was far from perfect, as especially seen with the race riots in the summer of 1919, which took primarily in the North and Midwest, it was an overall better experience than life in the South had been for most African Americans. And these opportunities for better jobs and a better life were made possible because immigration was restricted.
If reducing legal immigration benefitted African Americans' economic opportunities, imagine what reducing ILLEGAL immigration would do for Black Americans' economic opportunities.
And have you seen the riots going on in England today? Over immigration ... not exactly for the same reasons but it will be coming here soon with no vetting at the border.

I'm in DC. Several weeks ago, I was passing through downtown towards the end of the day near all the FED buildings. One was beginning renovated. The stream, the ocean of Hispanic faces with construction gear on pouring out of that building - I was taken aback. Not too long ago, that would've been nearly all black gaces.
