Well most people on India pay digitally, that might be a reason ATMs didn't work. You can find payment QR codes in every shop - big and small. All street food shops as well. The paan shop you had tea at, had a QR code too.

Chris bhai, I was born in India and lived there for more than 12 years. I have been living in Canada for more than 20 years now and visit India every 3 years or so. As a child I had to learn Hindi in Class 4 (as I returned to India after a few years) and it was a challenge at first but then I fell in love with it. I loved learning English and Hindi in school in India; they were my favourite subjects.
Your expertise in Hindi is commendable and it seems you have a lot of love for the language. I think that is great and I am glad you had a good visit to India. Take care buddy. Best wishes.

The one recommendation i want to give you is that India is a extremely diverse place, so make sure to visit as many places you can, especially the south (especially kerela) and north east they're almost like their own countries with their unique languages and cultures
