The sponge filter should be at the bottom tray. If you see sun sun filters, the water is sucked in and first passes through the first tray and then the subsequent trays. So it's important to put coarse sponge and polishing sponge in the bottom most tray. The other two trays can be used to keep other bilogical filter medias.
