    RME make the best audio interfaces. Been using them for years, would never use anything else. Solid hardware, extremely reliable drivers, the lowest latency you'll find, limitless internal patching. When I see an RME box in someone's studio, I have immediate respect for them and know that they know what they're doing.

    I have used different audio interfaces during the years. A year ago I decided to buy an used RME Fireface UCX. The single best feature with these devices, for me. Is the stability of the interface and the software. I have not had a single problem with the interface at all. And everything works really fine, and stable over an old USB 2 connection.

      I am a hobbyist, too. The Babyface is a great interface for people like us. I have the previous version of the one shown here. You can also buy used for one of the bigger things and still get Total Mix, though the really “old” units like the Fireface won’t give you the effects. In any of these cases you get crystal clear preamps which are great for recording stuff like acoustic guitar and other instruments, voice, and found sounds at home.

    • @Am6-9
      @Am6-9 3 года назад +2

      Hobbyist here too. Bought a fireface ucx after having had cheap interfaces for years. It was a shitload of money and i was also very much insecure at the time about whether i really need a pro device, but I dont regret it at all. It is super performant, stable and packed with features, e.g. very reliable multiclient ASIO on Windows. Totalmix is quite intimidating at first, but you can pretty much do everything with it. A lot of the cheaper interfaces fail on the driver and software support.
      judging from RMEs track record for support i guess that I’ll be able to use it for ~15 years or so, so that is way less than hundred bucks per year.

For its price they are not even fully compatible with Apple’s M1 products. And now Monterey is around the corner my gear is not fully compatible. How is your experience with RME products? @@Intellijent1 I really did. When I first plugged in my monitors, Neumann KH80's, they sounded more detailed. Also, when I first recorded guitar, the DI input had much more dynamic range. Also, when I first recorded vocals, the preamp sounded crisper and also more detailed. That said, I still think the Clarett is a great interface for the price, especially the thunderbolt 2 versions, you can get them really cheap used. The Babyface Pro FS is better imo, but it's also quite expensive for a 2 channel interface - but definitely a pro oriented device.

    6:00 24:24 Drivers are the easy part. The reason RME interfaces are so fast, stable and performant is because RME has also designed its own USB interface chip which integrates tightly with said drivers. Essentially every other interface maker uses off-the-shelf chips and drivers.

    • @nads5907
      @nads5907 3 года назад +3

      Agree with everything you wrote, except the bit about you being lazy. RME Total Mix has a steep learning curve and isn't exactly intuitive, which can be somewhat off-putting. In today's world where you have to learn a million other pieces of software, this isn't exactly a bonus. Yes, RME make amazing interfaces, and yes their software can be learned, but the software is the weak point of their game in my opinion.
      Still wouldn't change interfaces, though, which says something!

    I bought one, then two, and now three RME Digiface USB interfaces because their drivers are so rock solid and they are so high quality in terms of audio and because I had enjoyed tracking my synths simultaneously so much. And TotalMix is such a joy to work with. 96 inputs, 102 outputs. Digicheck is immediate and accurate. They're just great. I still use MOTUs for my preamps / AD & DA converters / ADAT interfaces, but they're not doing the PC interface work anymore.
    RME is great. Period.

    • @faxanadu1786

      Would you explain the signal chain on this a bit? Do you have multiple motu's sending to your digiface which interfaces with your pc?

    • @mc2engineeringprof
      @mc2engineeringprof 2 года назад +1

      @@faxanadu1786 Sure. I have 4 MOTU 828 mkii's and 8 Behringer ADA8000's. I have an optical cable in the input and output of each running to the 3 Digiface USB's (4 in/outs on each). I also have an external clock to sync them all. I then have 3 USB cables going into my PC (NOT to a hub...a separate USB channel for each).
      I also have a FireWire connection (daisy chain all 4) info my PC for the MOTU's - not for audio, but to control the audio port configuration (the MOTU's have more than 8 inputs and outputs, so I can select which ones to send and receive this way as well as setting other MOTU parameters).
      Then, I just used the RME drivers and software to configure the 96 input channels and 102 output channels. In my DAW, I simply see all of the inputs and outputs under that one RME driver. Easy.

    • @faxanadu1786
      @faxanadu1786 2 года назад

    • @mc2engineeringprof
      @mc2engineeringprof 2 года назад

      @@faxanadu1786 It is just one interface; the Digiface USB. There just are 3 of them...though the DAW sees them as one driver and one interface. I chose it because it was the cheapest way to get low latency input of 85+ analog inputs and about 40 outputs. At about $400 per unit, it was $1,200 plus the cost of the converters (which I purchased used). So, it was less than $2,500 less cables and clock.

    I have used good headphones and i heard a more pronounced bass on prism , clear and defined voice also more of reverb tale on high freqs.. So for me it was quite a difference!. I am looking forward to go to my studio and use your A B C test because i want to buy a prism lyra 2 or an rme adiface pro fs or maybe a babyface if they sound similar. Does the lyra 2 has same A/ D converter as your Prism ( i dont't know what model you have) .Because if if does than i will buy a lyra 2 . Cheers and thank you

      Hi bro! Which one you bought? Honestly I'm a bit dissapointed after watching this video, I noticed that Babyface Fs is lacking low end and body in comparison with Ufx+ and Prism. Just listen, It starts at 18:24. Kinda thin sound.

      I'm glad to see someone else heard what I heard immediately. I'd never heard a Prism against other interfaces but WOW, it was a considerable difference even listening on crappy headphones. I listened back to that section again on my Barefoot's and it was just as pronounced. Too bad RME's don't come with Prism converters. That'd be game over for any competitors. I've been using Antelope's high end stuff (ditched the Avid stuff) but had quite a few issues with it/them. Makes me wonder how the best Antelope offering would sound against a Prism.

    RME has fantastic support even for legacy hardware that has long been replaced already.
    By the way for anyone that had experienced crashes the RME ios IPAD app, due to the Ipad OS upgrade to 14.2
    RME has now released an update to the app, that solves the problem that was caused by Ipad OS 14.2!

      Yes, it's crazy - a few years back RME released a new firmware for the Multiface I (released in the stone age) and new drivers for WinXP! Absolutely amazing support. By buying RME I know I won't have to worry about support for new OS versions etc.

    So I put my earphones on when you did the shootout...and honestly didn't hear anything...then I ran to the studio...and decided to hear the same on my Modified Hifiman HE500 which is also specially equalized for my ears... and I felt huge difference. Like the PRISM was so big in the low end. The midrange was so clear. When you switched to Fireface800, it was a disappointment, No low end, and the midrange was like over compressed and the image was destroyed totally... UCX was better than 800, in the mid and high, but had no low end...
    Till I continued the video, and then I heard you saying, there is no difference between them! I thought something wrong with my ears...so I tried my 13 headphones. Only 3 of my headphones, which were all Planar headphones could tell the difference. Even my HD650 showed no difference. I even tried my Slate VSX headphone and couldn't tell any difference.
    Try to hear the same shootout on HIFIMAN HE500, or Audeze LCD-X or Audeze MM500 and you will definitely hear a huge difference between the 3 !!!

    And have RME got round that pesky pro tools 32 I/O problem,? I am seriously considering going back to RME. I had to get an avid interface as I am using a 36 channel console now. Needless to say I am getting more pissed off with avid with every passing day. After buying a perpetual licence it looks like they will trying to push subscription anyway. enough is enough but it would be great to know I could still use pro tools if I wanted too. going back to reaper I think. No crashes, no ridiculous restrictions and a much faster workflow in terms of setting up sessions

  • @johnkristian

    You couldn't hear the difference?!!
    I could, on the recording, via a pair of KEF LSX in my bedroom. 😳
    My opinion is (best to worst):
    1: Prism
    2 UFX+
    3: Babyface
    I thought the babyface stuck out as "the bad one". The UFX+ Impressed my a lot, especially compared to the PRISM, which sounded amazing even on a recording like this.
    What, where and what does "a prism" (unknown product for me) cost?

    • @Sardonicuss
      @Sardonicuss 3 года назад +3

      Yes, noticed that. But as I am also looking to buy a new interface, seeing that the Babyface is a third of the price of the cheapest PRISM (the ADA version in this video is somewhere between 9-12 times the price of the FS by doing a quick check on Google), that slight reduction in low end is something that I don't mind. From what I checked RME, at least the Babyface is quite transparent in comparison to other interfaces, so much so that it's dull which can be a good thing or a bad thing, it depends on your taste. So maybe that is the result of lack of coloring. I cannot say for sure, and two songs won't decide whether an interface is good or bad for you. As far as I can get from this review, when it comes to best bang for your buck, I would say the Babyface is killing it. I am still looking for alternatives, but from the looks of it, at this price point the Antelope has shitty drivers, so it's between UAD Solo and the Babyface.

    Hi, thanks for the video. This was great. I want a Babyface Pro FS for my home studio. However, I need 8 preamps for an acoustic drum kit. The Fireface UFX+ still only offers 4 preamps, at a price of $2,800 USD. Would you recommend I pair the Babyface Pro FS with something like a Focusrite Octopre via ADAT at $700? That would get me going for $1,500. I could also do the Babyface + RME OctaMic II. That one is $1,800, so with that and the Babyface, I'd be back again at $2,800 UFX+ pricing, give or take.

      I'd like to point out the ufx+ is really no better than the ufx ii, if you're not using MADI. They are identical otherwise (the usb 3/thunderbolt 2 doesn't give better performance or lower latency, it's only necessary to be able to add in all of the MADI 64 in/out at that very low RME latency). It can also be found, used, for a lot cheaper than the +.

      Hi, TotalMix FX is installed as part of the driver. So once you've downloaded and installed the driver from the RME website, TotalMix will open automatically every time you connect your device to your computer.
      Are you on a Mac or PC? If it's a Mac running High Sierra or above, you'll need to make sure you allow access to your device (Apple added this as an extra security feature, and it's the case for all third party devices). RME have a tutorial which covers the steps here;
